Carlton didn't win more games for a reason Cripps died for half the year, Melbourne won more games for a reason Oliver had 3 poor games. Cripps kicked half his goals in the 1st 6 rounds when they were up and about and fell off a cliff like the team did when the pressure was on. Oliver is a better clearance player a better accumulator and unlike Cripps has a much better kick to handball rating. Yes Cripps kicked more goals however Oliver doesn't rest forward and also has more SI/Goal Assists and Score launches. You're all getting sucked into Cripps last 2 weeks of form again and have magically forgotten the large portion of the season where he went missing he is nowhere near the 2nd best mid in the comp he just has a very good best that he can only seem to find for 4-5 week blocks at a time that takes a toll on him.

This is just so wrong. When Carlton fell off a cliff (last 5 weeks) Cripps was at his best. Coaches votes in 4
of those 5 games. Averaged over 32 and led comp in clearances and contested possessions over that stretch.
He didn’t fall off a cliff at anytime In 2022. Got coaches votes in 14 of 22 games.
Went off early against GC so can scrap that game.

He had 40 against the crows and had no impact he was good in the last 2 games but again his impact in the middle rounds was fairly non existent hence this thread was quiet after r10

So Cripps can't perform without a decent ruckman?

And before you go on about Oliver having Gawn, Oliver went at 35.5 touches per game, 9 clearances & 7.7 tackles in the games that gawn did not play which is actually a higher average in those categories than when he has Gawn playing
How many games did Clarry have to go into the ruck in those games? Cripps clearly plays better when the teams structure isn't messed up and hes having to play as a tall outlet down the line vs KPP and take his share of ruck contests too. The games where he was able to play as a pure mid and he had the talls around him he performed consistently well.

His form almost perfectly coincided with Pittonet and other talls getting injured/returning... Surely you don't think that's purely by chance?

The issue is, every time Cripps is out of form there are excuses coming from Carlton supporters. It's either he had to ruck or he had a broken back or his coach is shit. The excuses are tiresome

I mean most of round 6, 7 & 8 Pittonet was out and it didn't effect his game, yet when Cripps is poor it becomes an excuse

Plus I mean Silvagni did most of the rucking anyway

But Mckay, Dekoning and Weitering - who were taking contests in the fwd and back line as well as being marking targets down the line in Pittonets absence were all playing in those games. Mckay went down after round 8 and the next game where Cripps takes on his ruck load he drops in form.

Goes from by far the best player in the comp up until then to pretty average with the odd big game here and there vs lowly teams.

The next game Pittonet plays for the season Cripps has 41 touches and 12 clearances... and proceeds to have a great month of footy

Surely you can see the correlation here...?

14 times in coaches votes in 21 games tells a diff story.
As does winning ABC player of the year with Oli and being named VC and Ruck rover in AA Team.
Certainly fell off the cliff for half a year.

He had a quiet stretch but 'falling off a cliff' for half the year is such hyperbole.

Polled 14 out of 21 times in coaches votes, AA team, several other (meaningless) media awards. You don't get those accolades by going missing for half the year.

But yes, his form through the middle and even the end was nowhere near his first 7-8 games.

Round 9-18.

In this 9 game stretch he only reached Oliver's average disposals once. And his clearance numbers were low and his kick to handball ratio were low. But he was also just failing the eye test and lost any speed that he looked to have in the early rounds.

What dribble. You may as well have just said ‘you know what I just don’t like him much’
His stats may have been less than Oliver, but so what..he wouldn’t have been rucking at times and at other times swiping 6 arms away from himself at every contest.
Rounds 13,14,16,17 he was brilliant. 3 times in coaches votes, twice 2nd best on ground. Averaged 30.
He never fell off a cliff. He may have tired and slowed a bit, but an injury list 16-18 deep will do that. But he remained a gun throughout. Blues just need others to step up like Melbourne have.
Cripps would be my first picked.

I do love the "Crippa had to ruck!!!" argument. He attended a total of 80 ruck contests for the entire season. For context, Pittonet attended 408 (in eight games), Silvagni attended 294, De Koning attended 1,024.

To put in perspective just how little time Cripps actually spent in the ruck, Jarrod Witts averaged 76.8 ruck contests per game (1,689 total).

A weak excuse for a notable drop-off. Still, a deserved AA team selection, but he's not on Oliver's level (who, at 25, is now a 2x AFLCA Champion Player, 3x AA, 3X B&F and premiership player).

Where's Clarry's brownlow???

Popcorn GIF by WWE

Got off his suspension on a legal technicality. Love me some Cripps but geez not sure how I feel about it.

Cripps is comfortably the best player in the league, I’d have Oliver around 4th or 5th
Best according to the umpires

Not in the top 5 according to the players or coaches though

Well done to Patrick after a couple of years looking like his best was behind him to getting back to the top of his game taking out the Brownlow

Oliver was for mine, out and out the best player this year. Jezza second, Miller third with Neale, Brayshaw and Petracca rounding it out.

However, I am still over the moon for the bloke. His first half of the season was immense.
