So am I still 'pretty naive' now?
Patrick says yes.

It's a midfielder's award. Darcy Moore had an excellent season as a key defender and didn't poll a single vote.

Nobody remembers coaches votes awards. Seriously, I have literally no idea who has won those and I assume it's probably a bunch of accumulator nobodies who the coaches see get the ball a bunch and think 'Oh I guess he's going alright'. The coaches don't know what they're on about, they just vote for their favourite player.

The umpires on the other hand, they're in the midst of the action, they see every nook and cranny. I genuinely believe they are best suited to determine who has had the most prolific footballing season, and in this case they've got it bang on with Cripps recieving the Brownlow. Maybe one day Oliver will be at this level, but unfortunately for him and Melbourne supporters, it's not today.

If it makes you feel better to try and push this over and over go ahead chief lol

Could've been any of Neale, Miller, Cripps, Oliver etc. Bit of a lottery with the umps.

It's not the be all and end all but its a damn fine achievement and is seen as prestigious within the sport.

Congrats to Crippa. Oliver will get one, I have no doubt.
Yeah, correct - such is the criteria of the Brownlow voting system. Any of those blokes would've been rightful winners in my mind. Brownlow is more of a contest of who has the most standout performances, whereas the Coaches and Players awards are a measure of who is in the best quarter of players afield week in week out.

Oliver will certainly get one, he is a legitimate superstar. Took until Cripps was 27 to nab one, Oliver is only 25.

I think peoples gripe with Cripps winning is do with his suspension being over turned

But tbf the whole fairest thing should be scrapped and retrospective medals awarded to Chris Grant and Corey McKernan who both missed brownlows for very soft suspensions

Cripps has Walsh, Hewett, Cerra & Kennedy in the middle, should've got more votes.

He also has two coleman medalists who will get votes and some great half backs like Doc/Saad who will always get some votes.

"No competition"

Walsh + Hewett + Cerra + Kennedy = 27 votes
Petracca = 24 votes himself

Petracca literally almost outpolled Crippas "competition" by himself. How can you even compare the two? Oliver and Petracca are two legitimate superstars who could have easily won if they didn't take votes off each-other. Crippa doesn't have another legitimate superstar consistency taking votes off him, Walsh was ordinary this year and Crippa is always getting votes over Hewett, Cerra and Kennedy every day of the week.

Cripps best was the best in the league comfortably. The games he got 3 votes it wouldn't have mattered who he had lining up next to him nobody was going to take votes off him when he was dishing out 35 and 2 goals

His peak this season was up there with the best in the league, but no way was he consistent enough to actually be considered the best player in the league this year. Had a big start, but then faded quite considerably in the second half.

Depends on what you'd rather - A player who wins 10 games a year off his own boot and is quiet in another 10

Or

A player who contributes heavily to 15 games a year and is quiet in another 5

Really that's a personal preference thing but I'd prefer the 10 games off their own boot, same reason I'd rather Petracca than Clarry if I was building a team

Yeah I mean let’s not be revisionist, even most Carlton supporters in this thread were miffed at his drop off this year (the ones who didn’t abandon the thread altogether)…

The Brownlow is a very very flawed award and Cripps was always a big chance to win given the massive media hype he received at the start of the year.

Anyone seen danster168 ?

50+ more posts in this thread than anyone else yet hasn't been seen in here since the result last night.

Must be struggling to take it all in.

Fixed that one up for you mate. Tell us how little you care about it though, go on.

huh? You're clearly not an avid follower of this thread. I mentioned back at the start of the year that it wouldn't surprise me if Cripps won the brownlow. It's not an award that I respect.

The coaches award is the one with credibility. But by all means, if you want to put Cripps' name alongside Ollie Wines, the greatest ever player according to last years record brownlow votes then by all means 😄

Maybe if he was consistant across the whole year you would have been playing finals though

Yep same as last year would you rather Bont or Wines. It always amazes me how many people bag the umpires relentlessly week in week out bag the way these votes come out most of the time then still suggest its the most prestigious individual award in the game when in reality it should be the least because the umpires literally just go a look at who got the most disposals after the game

You do not speak for all of us. Over here at Carlton we have the greatest and utmost respect for the umpires. We may from time to time discuss their decisions on a pure technical standpoint, but we will never spew the vitriol that other clubs let out. They give their votes in without checking the stats, this is a fact. So please do not discredit such a prestigious achievement to try and undermine Patrick Cripps 2022 season. This was an all time great season and has further lengthened the gap between him and Oliver.

If his early season form remained for the year - he probably would've broken the record for most amount of votes. Unrealistic expectation.

He definitely dropped off when Pitto left - they seem to work well together in the middle. Although he wasn't full-time ruck or anything, he rucked occasionally around the ground and I assume that would gas you a fair bit. He also didn't seem to move right for a few weeks there, but maybe was imagining it, because his form as soon as Pitto came back was good again.

Couldn't have really asked for much more from him in 2022. I thought his leadership improved ten-fold.

Yeah his first 8 weeks were pretty insanely good

Oh you don't respect it. I guess Crippa should probably hand it back then, huh?

Until someone you don't like wins it of course, after which you'll find a way to discredit it.

Your shtick is up mate, it's embarrassing.

I'm not sure you know what 'literally' means. No, they don't do that at all, literally or otherwise.

I think i've been very reasonable about Cripps in this thread throughout the year. Him winning the Brownlow doesn't change anything regarding my impression of his season (very good start, baffling drop off, good finish).

There was a point in time in the season (circa rounds 19-20) where it was looking like he would drop out the AA team. Again, let's not re-write history and say he was the best player in the competition this year because the umpires bought into his early season hype.
