$60 is a ridiculous price for a cap especially one that’s just 100% thin polyester material, even with my membership voucher I thought $40 was a bit of an ask for what it is.

In the USA the conversion has them nearly $100 Aus. The problem is people pay it so they can charge it. It is insane really.

This.

Sports apparel in general is unbelievably expensive for what it is. But people will always pay it.

Which is hilarious, because everyones complaining but they still buy it. Where is the incentive for the company to drop their prices if their sales dont decrease. Best way to send a message is to not purchase the item.

That’s harsh though.

If people want regular active wear they have a range of choices in brands which helps to regulate the prices a little.

If someone wants to wear the favourite sports teams gear they’re stuck, pay the outrageous price or don’t get it.

They have a captive audience essentially.

The fact that clubs that claim to want to promote community are actively ripping off the very people who create that community is kinda gross, but hey, that’s capitalism for ya.

You will probably find the club is held to the prices set by the supplier. The reason is the supplier not only supplies the club shop but AFL retail markets all around the country. The club probably only makes about 30-40% of the entire retail price. They dont get the merchandise for free. They would get an element of it as part of the sponsorship, like clothing for players and staff free but everything in the club shop would be bought and paid for by the club like any other business.

As for captive audience, rubbish. You dont have to purchase anything. If you want to thats fine but its a free world and you are actively making the decision to buy that product and accept the price as default.

It's a similar scenario to food & beer pricing at Football Grounds & why it's so expensive .....fees are inbuilt into pricing

Certain aspects I'm not 100% sure of the mechanics .....let's assume though, a hefty upfront sponsorship fee is paid by the clothing company ....that fee is "partially" recovered as a surcharge by the clothing company in it's cost price .....then you add an almighty wack of money the AFL gets for use of it's AFL logo

The Club charges a premium for Club clothing, because people are silly enough to buy it .....it's an emotive purchase, similar to the exorbitant prices charged for Wedding Dresses

We all have a choice though ....
