There was a 90 degree turn in Sholl's movement. It's literally impossible for it not to either be a) play-on when he started to kick, b) if not A then he must have been backing back at such an absurd angle that it was play on then.

I will add, that it would not be play on if we weren't 5 moral panics deep into trying to resolve the "Stand rule and large protected zone are good, but any attempts to enforce those rules are bad" quandary

It's right

SPPs opponent was there. He was allowed to be there
Bullshit..

that’s only if a team mate is running around the back of, or past, the player with the ball and the opponent (spp) is following.. then you can be in the 5m zone.

this was a team mate and ssp standing around in the 5m zone.

the umpire should’ve stopped play and asked all players to move out of the 5m area and then allowed sholl to play the ball.. like they normally always do..

the ump fxxled it up.

Was it the bloke that watches the man in the moon a lot? ⁉️

Or maybe the Toon guy?
It’s really got me bewildered the hinge knockers at the moment.. he’s been bloody good all year..

just love the way he takes the game on..

Correct, I've seen umpires reset the mark even when the player is in the process of kicking and there was an opposition player within area. Clearly the umpire panic and made an incorrect call which lead to an easy goal to Port Power and stopped our momentum.

The umpires even stop a player from taking a kick when a team mate wanders up to them to give them some advice.. they stop the play and ask the team mate to walk away..

you aren’t allowed in the 5m zone unless you are chasing a player who is a team mate of the guy with the ball..

if you were allowed to stand in the 5m zone then there would be no point having the opposing team man the mark and have a stand rule to make sure they don't move off that mark..

it was a ridiculous decision.

Kane Cornes referred to Powell Pepper’s last quarter goal as “one of the all time great showdown goals”

What?? It was just a regulation goal

Lacks all credibility that bloke
He's a complete fraud who only has his job because he's been willing to bend over for anyone with enough influence to get him a comfy job.

The whole croc media dipshits regurgitate the same exaggerated lines about how x is the biggest thing to ever happen in the history of the universe, because for whatever reason I assume there are people out there that fall for the dumbest clickbait. Look at the way the Sunday Footy Show do their YouTube clips with absolute nonsense akin to "this is the end of football as we know it" with a steely Caroline Wilson or Kane Cornes staring down the barrel of the camera. OooOoOoOoo, spooky ...

Hack "journalism".

What was the price they paid for him again?
Stole this (it was easier) from Poo board:

We gave up Ladhams and pick 16 to move up to Pick 12.
We then gave up our future second rounder to move up two more spots to get him.
So all up, Ladhams and a second rounder to move from Pick 16 to Pick 10 (which then dropped to pick 12 after bids).

And with that 2nd round pick West coast select Harry Barnett an SA lad who's 200cm and capable of being a great ruck or CHB

Doesn’t give him the right to tackle the bloke before play on is called though.

This is the key. Unless something has changed that I'm not aware of, you're not allowed to tackle until the umpire yells play on. The umpire can't just decide afterwards "well yeah you kinda did play on so fair game".

Sensible decision would have been a ball up, but by the letter of the law it should have been 50.

The one against Hinge was worse anyway. He takes a mark, goes to jog backwards to the mark and a Port player straight up blocks him. Hinge bounces off him and immediately gets called to play on, is tackled, HTB. Absurd.

Which clown was bagging Hinges game last night?

I'm genuinely befuddled by the anti-Hinge sentiment expressed by a few around here. He's been great all season. Yeah he burns a couple, that's what happens when you're used as an attacking option out of defence. But he provides great value and is a versatile defender to boot.

The most satisfying part of last night's win was getting it despite several players being well out of form. Walker, Smith, Berry, Butts all provided nothing. Milera did a couple of good things bit was otherwise useless. Sloane played one good quarter. Gollant never really got going (just keeping Fog's spot warm). McAdam, Fogarty and Parnell all missing from the side.

Murphy showed there is still value in just giving 110% at all times. Lacks class but so much heart. Same goes for Murray, I love that big galoot :) Not the most talented player but full of heart, he refused to give an inch and just threw that giant body around.

Rankine, Thilthorpe, Rachele, Pedlar, Soligo, Michalanney, there is some serious young talent in our side. Fog to come back too. We just need to get our midfield sorted and we'll start to look alright!

I thought it might have started with V and ended in ader…

There is no protected area if there's a player in it

It's play on when the umpire decides that he's played on (which he had)

No, you're wrong in both respects.

Powell Pepper is only allowed to be in the protected area if he is accompanying or following his player. He was not. Whilst he began engaged with his opponent, Smith runs off towards the right of screenand he made no effort to follow or remain with him. He was illegally in the area at that point.

No Player shall enter and remain in the Protected Area unless the field Umpire calls ‘Play On’ or the Player from the opposing Team is accompanying or following within two metres of their opponent. Any Player caught in the Protected Area must make every endeavour to immediately vacate the Protected Area.

Secondly, play on does not turn on the umpires subjective view, but rather whether or not they have called play on.

(b) If a Player does not dispose of the football within a reasonable time, or attempts to dispose of the football other than in a direct line over The Mark, the field Umpire shall call ‘Play On’ and the football shall immediately be in play.

The video footage demonstrates clearly, objectively, and beyond any question that play on was called after the tackle. The football was not in play at the time the tackle occured. It was a 50m penalty, and a clear umpiring error.

the umpire should have called for SPP to follow Smith and exit the area

Kane McGoodwin congratulations on the win.

Also....

Round 1 I put $30 for saints to beat Freo at $2.80.

Last week... I did a crazy $20 bet on north to beat Freo at $6.

My crazy bet of round 3 was $5 on the crows to beat port at $3.25
How about putting some money on us to win the premiership this week? :p
