RICHMOND should re-sign Ben Cousins now for 2011. Cousins' documentary will be confronting, sensational and a must-watch. It is reality TV at its purest.
But the program, and its inevitable fallout, won't - and shouldn't - influence the Tigers' decision on whether to keep Cousins for one more year. His ability to instil 250-plus games of football, and life experience on a young list should sway Tigers coach Damien Hardwick - and outweigh the argument that Cousins is taking the spot of a younger player.
Richmond has several players likely to be cut at the end of the season without worrying about Cousins clogging the list.
And Cousins provides much-needed silk in a midfield that has some stars in the making in Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin, but which can look very blue-collar.

Good read, Hird at his best!

Would it still be a good read if Hirdy had of come out and said Cousins should be cut?

Let me just start off by saying I for one definatley want Cuz to go around again, but I also respect your opinion RT. I have read your posts outlining that you think it's in the best interest of list development to play the kids and that keeping Cuz will negate that. I think that Hirdy has written a very compelling article in support of Cuz playing on, (yes it's a better read if your looking from the same side of the fence as Hirdy), but I think that the points raised are worth noting. O'reilly and Gourdis into the team this week will be senior debutants 10 and 11 (I think) this year. I think this shows that we were still able to get games into these young guys.
My reserved seating at home games is ground level 2 bays Punt Road End of the Richmond interchange (10-15m.). The players walk the boundary when interchanged right in front of me each week. The example given of Cuz and Martin dissecting the game is one of many I've seen first hand this season. It has only received so much coverage because it was caught on camera. Cuz is basically an onfield coach to all these guys, and one who is a premiership player, brownlow medalist, All Australian, 250 games etc., when you are fortunate enough to have someone like this end up at your club as we did (especially when we have not anyone as well credentialled as him, Kane Johnson would have been next in line I think) you extract every last drop of information, hard training/gut running example, etc., that you can. The players just seem to soak up what Cuz tells them as he has already achieved what they still aspire to do.
While still obviously in our best 22 now he may well be overtaken next year by a newcomer, so be it, his contract would only be a year to year proposition. Who knows Axel might even be fit, but I'm also starting to worry that he is turning into our new Cogs.
Cuz deserves a one year contract for mine and I think he will get it.

Either way I'm sure Dimma and co. will make the right call for the club after sitting down with Cuz.

Re: Play on, Ben Cousins

Odd comments from Hird given he retired after winning his club's best and fairest to give youngsters his opportunities.
Me thinks he is pandering to the masses on this one.

and look where that's got them.
Delaying the Richmond renaissance whilst an ageing Cousins is taking away game experience from a young kid.
Let's recognise where we are at. Re-signing Cousins is wasted time.

Got rid of Lloyd and Lucas and then went and recruited Mark Williams on an umpteen year deal.

I think it's difficult to draw a comparison between the final stages of James Hird and Ben Cousins careers. Hirdy had achieved all that he wanted to out of his career and was ready to move onto the next stage of his post football life, into the corporate world and the media. Cuz still has the hunger required to play AFL football at the top level. He has expressed his strong desire to play on, he is obviously still in our best 22 (I personally think our best 10) and he remains one of our most driven, hardest working athletes at the club. He has not requested longer than a single year contract with us, as he says that personally works for him and keeps him focused, knowing that a form slump or becoming complacent would surely spell the end of his career. His work ethic is regarded as legendary at both of his AFL clubs and he sets as fine an example on the training track as he does on the park.
Ultimately the club will make the right call on whether Ben plays on or not and that's something we will have put aside our personal opinions and learn to live with.
I noticed reader comments attracted the Hird article that stated along the lines of "No Cuz, No RFC Membership for me", these type of hysterical comments both anger and disappoint me. I want us to retain Cuz for 2011, but will continue to financially support the club regardless of what decision is made and really hope others have the maturity to do the same.

Re: Play on, Ben Cousins

there's another year in him but would he be holding back the development of a younger player by playing? i'd like to see him go out while he's still capable of playing at this level and taking on a mentoring/coaching role with the club.

Re: Play on, Ben Cousins

I for one want Cousins to play on. I've read many articles in the media and posts on here and where there is plenty of up sides(mentor, training, blocking etc) I can only see one down: He's taking games off a kid...
Who?? I would like to know who should be in our 22 instead of Cousins? We blooded 11 kids this year with Cousins in the side and will prob. do the same next year.. I just think the against argument makes no sense..

Re: Play on, Ben Cousins

Let's face it, with the re-signing of King (27 next year), the 'taking games off a kid' line has been completely torn apart. It will come down to the media issues and the documentary.

Re: Play on, Ben Cousins

The truth is when James Hird speaks the majority of supporters listen. Why? because he rarely talks BS thats why. He has been there and done it all. If James said Ben should put his boots away then it would be good enough for me. The fact is Hird doesnt believe having Cousins for one more year is going to hurt us at all and I agree with him.

My personal feel is that this will be Cousins last season and that is a shame, not for us supporters but for all those young guys we currently have running around at the club to learn from the best. Thats something we havent had at Richmond for nearly 30 years.
