‘Lack of resources ‘ is a lame excuse and in accurate. The early period of his involvement is where most clubs had spotters around the country who lived within communities and Richmond had as many as any club . Difference is he continually just ignored those people and pinned his career on being someone who found diamonds in the rough .
Martin and Cotchin were both highly rated and many thought could / should have went #1 in their draft year , the fact the ended up at Richmond with 3 & 2 respectively and full filled their potential , has saved fine eyes of scrutiny .
