Congrats to NOBSPC's and Big Footy favourite Alphonse, who completed the Paris Marathon overnight in a tick over 4 hours. A great effort and bodes well for his eventual return to the midfield at the Gillon. Well done 'Phonse.

Anyone who completes a marathon is worthy of much respect in my book - a great effort.

CKII, we've heard precious little out of the purple people this off-season, 'cept whispers of losses to D2 teams in Paradians and Werribee.

Have you got the finger on the pulse out at Gillon?
Any new arrivals?
Departures?

Are the old firm of Barker, Sleep and Tonkin suiting up again for season 2008?

Usual suspects of Barker, Sleep, Tonkin, Hosking & Brady (the best one of the family) are all playing. Haven't been able to watch either senior game unfortunatley, though I thought we beat Parade? I could give you an update on the twos games though... and whilst we aren't back to the Juggernaut days of 2000-2004, we should improve on last year (as you'd hope). All we need is an Alphonse return.

Departures of note are McGowan (o/s) and Van Dyk (interstate). Number of arrivals as always, haven't seen em play so Rd 1 will be the judge.

Fitzroy and South Melbourne had a really good hit-out yesterday at Ramsden Street. Reasonably physical and intense encounter in the seniors, pretty lopsided to the Reds in the reserves. No real scores were kept, but South probably got up by 1-2 goals. Heaps of walk-up Fitzroy senior players missing.

Terry. Another loss by the Reds can't be too encouraging, especially to a team that was in D2 last year. I think the Reds will have to come up with a new excuse for their poor performances soon too. "Missing Players" and "Injuries" is getting a bit old now. What happened to the guts, and fight that we have all heard about for years. Anyway, I wasn't there, so I can't comment on Saturday, but the last time they played NOBs they got smacked from one side of Alec Gillon to another. I sure hope they get some of these missing players back because the grapevine tells me NOBs are going to be very good in 2008.

Sounds like NOBSPC will go into this one as raging favorites in the late fixture, I wonder if they will also be favored in the early one?

From memory, the Reds reserves faired pretty well in C section in 2007 (11 or 12 wins?) -CKII , will the NOBSPC lads need to channel the spirit of Alphonse in order to start the season with 4 points this Saturday?

No idea how we shape up against the Reds in 1sts or 2nds this year.

With the twos, as long as they have Nick "Morning" Evans, they're always hard to beat. Whilst Alphonse makes a brief return to our shores in a few weeks, so expect the NOBPSC 2nds form to improve at that point in time.

Happy to confirm that, due to circumstances within his control, Reds reserves 2006 B&F and resident ladies man Nick Evans will not be taking the field at the Gillon this Saturday.

Will be sadly missed, but uni/work commitments have taken priority at this early juncture. No doubt, if his schedule opens up, and with a couple of good mates running around again, we may have him back from July onwards.

NB - since Nick advised me he was going to be doubtful for season 2008, my hair has stopped turning grey!!! Coincidence? I think not.

Word filters through to me via a pretty pissed off official of another club, that BT have 'aquired the services' of a certain 6ft 6 ruckman and B&F winner??

You boys have been very quiet this pre-season.

Has been mentioned on another thread. Has been disppointing that we have lost 2 excellent young players to Bulleen Temp over the past 12 months. Greg did win a b and f for Kew last year but we wish him well in d1. Heard he will be a good replacement for Waters who has gone to Lancefield.

Who was the other one?

it will give the BT carlton fans something to smile about if the young greg williams gets as many possies as his famous name-sake this weekend

Sorry to hear this Oldtimer - we have been on the end of a few players wanting to be ' up the grades ' over the past years and it makes it difficult to achieve that in your own right.

Chump.

Here is the panther man's tips for 2008:

Top 4:

Old Geelong: Will be up and firing early on, and will win 13 + games to finish on top. Will be a very strong at home and won't drop a game. Will also win in the battle of the supports with the best looking in the entire ammo's.

Prahan: Always strong, with U/19's starting to come through, will have lots of leg speed. With the older heads as well holding them in good sted. Look for Prahan to win 10 + games.

North Old Boys: Have lost some, gained some but looks to have gained more quilty. Look for them to win 10 + games. They will start off slow, but fire at the end of the season once they work out what D1 footy is about.

Fitzroy Reds (Lions): They will be force, very hard to beat at home in front of big crowds, have done some good recruiting but also like many clubs in the ammo's lost a few too. They will be looking at 10 + wins as well.

The Rest:
Old Mentonians: Ben McGee's team will drop alot of early games, will come home with a wet sail but will miss out on finals because of poor early form. Lost a number of players already. OS boys out till June. Out of all the D1 clubs have done the worst recuiting, only one senior player David Teasdale. The whole team rest on his shoulders.

Bullen Temp: Will be good, but not great. Have alot of good players but don't have the bottom 6 players to play finals and win the close games. Have done some recuiting, and have heard alot of good things about these recuits will take some time to jell. Look out for BT in 2009.

Penisula: Haven't lost many, and recuited well. Like BT will be good, but not great. Will have gained alot off last year and with coaching being stable (not having one leave to go overseas) will see them finish higher then last year.

South Melbourne: Look like they will be ok. But rely on 6 - 10 every week, with injuries will struggle. But if injury free, could challenge any club on its day. Look for them to beat one or two of the top sides. Costello if he plays holds the key to them winning more then they lose.

The Bottom Two:

Aquinas: Haven't heard much, but don't look to have down a huge amount of recuiting. Will drop back down to D2. Will fight out the year, but will end up only winning 3 - 4 games.

Yarra Valley: Nothing. They have little numbers didnt do alot of training over summer and didnt have a ground, rely on Ash Drew and James Keem. Both good players, will see them winning 2 games beating Old Mentone when they play them at Domeney.

GF Winner: Prahan

Would have to agree with that. OG were a major disappointment last year after going out in straight sets in '06. Will probably have one of the best teams on paper, but talent alone doesn't win you the big games.

Should finish on top with a solid home ground advantage. Will battle it out with Peninsula for the best looking supporters title.

Surely Teasdale would have to be the best recruit for D1 this year? Why does the whole team rest on his shoulders. It was a very good side last year and the younger guys will have improved. Can not see any players leaving for other clubs. IMO, anything less than promotion will have been a disappointing year for OM

Simply a case of OMs trying to manage expectations methinks. I've still got them comfortably in the top 4 by round 18.

That may well be Frase, but I have it on very good authority that 11 of last year's Prelim Final side aren't suiting up again and a staggering 45 that played in some capacity last year are yet to be seen this year - with the exception of a handful that are overseas travelling and due back in June/July.

Geez, that is a lot - especially from the best available 22 on PF day.

Hmm maybe it's better to have a team full of old, slow married blokes who have mortgages and can barely get a week off work, let alone 6 - 12 months to go backpacking through Europe. :D

That's soooo 1999!!!

thats a huge turnover. where have they all gone? they have not been cleared to other clubs. maybe they are sick of footy or maybe they don't want to play under Mcgee.

Sorry panther man, but the panthers are an easy pick for the top 4 this year. After beating a C section team quite comfortably on the weekend, with an undermanned team and David Teasdale playing at FF, OM's are a shoe in this year.

Yours sincerely Buzz;)
