Dale Thomas megathread (very bumped, see post #1072)

Dale Thomas made the right call, you can all hate him as much as you want but loyalty is overrated in sport.

He grew up a Geelong fan so why should he show loyalty to Collingwood. Got offered 2 years $500 000 a year compared to Carlton's offer 4 years $700 000 a year.

People say being a one club player gets you set up for life after footy and I think that's just a load of crap. It happens to some players but not all of them.

You win some you lose some.

Are you sure we only offered 2 year contract ?

And i dont begrudge him going for money, but the way he went about things when leaving i do !

And the fact he wont see finals the rest of his career unless he goes to a 3rd club and Malthouse destroying his sh1t club before getting the sack, proves money and greed can bring bad Karma

You can look at it totally business like but I don't. We gave him a lot, both the club and the supporters. He was made the face of the club for younger supporters, heavily promoted. He didn't say no to the extra money he got for the extra publicity that came his way through such promotion. You bc an be cold hearted aboutitbutits our club, our sport our love. Turn your back on this clubs supporters which is what he did and you earn our wrath

He would have had a much better chance of being set up in the media etc post career, where he has already had roles, if he had stayed a magpie. He has lost reputation with his move.

Reputation and general scumbag the aside can you ever remember such a fall from grace like Thomas? In 2010 Ross Lyon said he was the best player in the comp. Now he's a Saturday afternoon plodder. Even ben cousins came back from rehab a better player.

To be fair, Ben Cousins probably went to rehab a better player too.

Yep, a pretty dramatic fall. It was 2011 when Lyon made that call, and Daisy was absolutely flying in the first half of that season. He has barely fired a shot since, with a series of missteps and misjudgements leading to his current inglorious position. I'm an infrequent watcher of footy programs, but he used to be all over them. Is he anymore? Poor performances and a damaged reputation kill those opportunities off very quickly.

Thought I read somewhere that his ankle injury was degenerative and that he had the injury recovery ability of a 70 year old.

how along was DT's contract? Could he be at a third club? Doubt he would play under Buckley or we would have him ack, but could he play the small forward/small defender role if on cheap coin?
$750-750k over 4 years.

Don't forget that there was an optional fifth year in that contract :p

I totally agree with this.

However, I don't begrudge him now, I'd probably feel differently if he had gone on to be the messiah! I have a daughter with a ton of 13 stuff all packed away. Luckily for me he defected when she was late teens, so the adulation was waning!

I just don't care now. His attitude when he left, he shoved it in our faces, unlike when Lkue ball came to Collingwood, and was just so respectful to the saints fans, even after the grand final win. (I'm sure their is saints fans who see it differently!) ANd after that game where pendles sat him on his arse in front of our cheer squad, well I just laugh at him now!

As for MMs comments, I think it's pretty disrespectful, to Daisy, but more so, to Carlton. But with the shit he came out with in 2011, and ever since, it doesn't surprise me. A "look at me' guy, who doesn't seem to understand the meaning of the word TEAM.

Malthouse disrepectful?

Dont be so disrepectful!

Did anyone else just hear MM on SEN a moment ago?

Said that when he was sacked from Carlton he took Dale Thomas aside and felt the need to apologise to him for bringing him to Carlton.

Whoa.
Sorry, can someone actually explain why he apologised?

I don't get it...

3 year deal at 750K might have been a slight factor too. He's right that clubs don't show loyalty to players, so players would be crazy to sacrifice a semitrailer full of money for loyalty.
I think relisting Keefe and Thomas is the first example of club loyalty I've noticed in a long while but maybe there have been others?
Collingwood giving Brent Macaffer a contract after 2 or 3 injury plagued seasons is loyalty.

Setting up players for post career is a sign of loyalty.

The fact that Rocca, Lockyer, Maxwell, Prestigiacomo, Licuria (?) and more have positions or roles at the club, whether coaching, administrative or media is a show of loyalty.

Clubs are a cut throat business, there's no mistaking that, but in respect to global sports, we are one of the most loyal out there.

He said sorry to Dale for things not working out at Carlton like they had hoped
Okay. I dunno. Just seems like a weird thing to apologise for.

Sorry to seem completely daft, I know there's an obvious meaning behind the words but I can't figure it out

He thinks now he should of left Daisy at Collingwood

for daisy he should have listen to moore snr said . he wished he had been a one club player
the money was less but the long term benefits were greater. yes there career is short but loyalty
to a club like Collingwood the benefits are for live when u are a legend of the club.

It's MM admitting he erred. Is this the start of him softening towards us, and trying to rebuild a relationship with our club?
No no VP, clearly Carlton are at fault here, and probably Eddie. Not the great MM

Maybe in a very MM roundabout way. Clearly he's trying to distance his legacy from Carlton. I can't imagine what the Carlton faithful would think of those comments.

It's a shame because Mick would have spent the rest of his years on this planet as Collingwood royalty and with that a lot of respect in the wider football public and media.

His life would have been an endless stream of tributes, dinners, celebrations, reunions and speaking engagements etc. Not a bad way to retire. The Collingwood family would have looked after him for the rest of his days.

Or it could be Mick crapping on another ex club.

Hopefully Moore Jnr listens to his old man and stays loyal throughout his career.

As for Daisy it's a pity that a player who could have remembered as a great for one of the biggest clubs in the land left for the wrong reasons (arguably), and will now not be remembered very fondly of by the two clubs he played for.
