Parcells retires from coaching

Two-time SB champion Parcells retires from coaching

IRVING, Texas -- Bill Parcells retired from coaching Monday, leaving the Dallas Cowboys after four years without a playoff win and just two weeks after a stinging wild-card loss to Seattle.

During a 19-year career that also included coaching the New York Giants, New England Patriots and New York Jets, Parcells made it to three Super Bowls, winning twice with the Giants.

In his last try, the Cowboys blew a chance to beat the Seahawks when Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo botched a hold on a short field goal with a little more than a minute left.

Parcells goes out having losing lost four of his final five games, including the last three. His announcement came 15 days after the loss to Seattle.

"I am retiring from coaching football," Parcells said in a statement. "I want to thank Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones for their tremendous support over the last four years. Also, the players, my coaching staff and others in the support group who have done so much to help. Dallas is a great city and the Cowboys are an integral part of it. I am hopeful that they are able to go forward from here."

Not surprised and won't be surprised if he's on someone else's payroll next year (not as a coach).

Buckley's and none.

If Dallas get the signing right then I think Bill is doing them a favour. He looked tired and past it this year.

As usual with Bill though, didn't do them any favours taking so long to announce it. Not 'Brett Favre long' but you know what I mean. Anyhow, wouldn't surprise me if JJ already has someone penned for the job.

Re: Parcells retires from coaching

Jeff Fisher rumors going on apparently - they (Titans) only contracted him for 1 year.

He is one of my favourite coaches - although you dont see much of the Titans...

Titans would have to release him from his contract to go to the Cowboys.

A lot of rumours flying around on potential candidates but most of it is purely speculation.

Interesting timing from Parcells though. Why wouldn't he have announced his retirement in the week after the playoff loss?

I dont think thats an issue. Cowboys would pay Titans compinsation.

If Fisher decided he wanted to go they would soon let him go because players arent going to be happy playing for a coach who has shown a disintrest in coaching there.

Saban would have been under contact, same thing..

Re: Parcells retires from coaching

The interesting thing is Jones is cashed up so much he will offer Fischer an offer he can't refuse, and the compensation to the Titans would be pittance to Jones.

However, I hope but also believe (wrong as I may be) that Fischer will not abandon the Titans. After such a great year this year, getting the team back up to playoff standard, and the potential therein, I would 'expect' Fischer to seek a contract extension with the Titans.

Also agree Danielz, Fischer is one of my favorite coaches too. Very underrated and the Titans a recently forgotten TV team.

Pity we haven't seen more of the Titans, but since they were expected to be a cellar dweller this year they weren't scheduled for too many if any nationally televised games. And with Fox contracted to telecast NFC games that means we don't get to see much of them at all on Foxtel.

Thankfully this should change next season. I'd enjoy seeing more of the lesser rating teams too.

Re: Parcells retires from coaching

Jeff Fischer doesn't get along too well with the Titans GM I think. I think that is why there are always rumors of him leaving.

In terms of compensation, it might not be monetary. It could be draft picks. Unless you are sure that you are getting the real thing, it is risky to give them up. That being said, I think Fischer is a very good coach and would probably be worth it. The question is what shape the Cowboys are in. Parcells has a history of trying to win and then leaving teams with a bad cap situation. Tenn is coming out of cap hell and seem to be a team on the rise. But I'm sure if JJ throws enough money at Fischer he can get him to coach Dallas (and TO - the coach killer).

Good points there to add to the 'pro' argument. It's definately possible. I just hope it doesn't happen tho.

I really like Fisher and he seems to be very popular with Cowboy fans, but I really dont see him going anywhere with how the Titans really came on in the second half of the season.

Since BP has been here, although the on-field results weren't what we were hoping for, I think he has left us in very good shape as he turned our whole roster upside down and brought in some very good players. Apparently this year we are 25mill under the cap too. What we need is a good head coach PLUS some decent co-ordinators/assistants which I think is whats let us down recently, as we have the cattle and just need a herder :p

Yeah, I hadn't heard anything too bad about the Cowboys cap situation. Maybe Parcells has learned to work within it. I know when he left the Pats and the Jets they weren't too good cap wise. Parcells came to the Pats right at the start of the cap and he seemed to have an open contempt for it. But I think he may have thought that the Pats in 96 (made the SB) and the Jets in 98 (I think they were 12-4 that year) were in a better position to win a SB than the Cowboys and thus it was worth the risk of future problems for immediate success.

Also, virtually no one is in very much cap trouble now. Both because after 10 or 12 years, teams understand the system better and are less likely to make major mistakes and also because of the recent increases in the cap. I think it just went from about 85 mil to 100 mil last season, and it is supposed to go up to about 117 mil in a year or two. With 30 mil more to play with in the span of 3 or 4 years, no teams should have severe cap issues.

Yeah true, think several average players will be getting huge money than they deserve due to this, think Adam Archuletta - the Redskins last offseason made him the richest safety EVER, yep more than Polamalu, Williams etc.

Speaking of those darn Redscums, they always seem to be in REAL cap trouble but always squirm their way out of it :(

Yeah, Asante Samuel picked a good year to get 10 picks. Then he got 2 more in the playoffs, both pick 6 no less. More than likely the Pats won't pay him as it is their MO to not overpay people with big money and long term deals. My friends and I were joking after his pick-6 against Peyton that he just made himself a few million more -
"Did I say $9 mil a year? I meant $11 mil, MoFo!" That was what was going thru his head as he raced unopposed into the endzone. Haha.

Re: ESPN: Phillips new head coach of Cowboys

I read on Yahoo NFL that they're still hellbent on Garrett taking over full-time in a few years. So Wade Phillips comes to the Cowboys fully aware he's care-taking for Garrett's eventual promotion to HC, and will probably be looking for another HC position once the Cowboys do make the switch over.

Also, the Raiders have been hiring the line coaches and offensive co-ordinators etc. I think they've hired about 4 now since Monday.

Re: ESPN: Bummer joins Cowboys

So the Cowboys appoint that 'BUM' as head coach... Does that make Jerry Jones an arse hole now. :D
Sorry couldn't resist. :p

Re: ESPN: Phillips new head coach of Cowboys

Good news for the 49ers. Norv Turner stays as OC. The last thing we needed was for Alex Smith to work with his third offensive coordinator in three years.

We also signed away Greg Manusky from the Chargers to be our DC before the Phillips signed. Manusky would have been the logical replacement as DC for the Chargers.

Very true. Keeping Turner and gaining Manusky is a huge win.

Chargers staff have been raided (no pun intended) and they might lose their defensive line coach to Dallas as well, although I doubt Chargers will let him go now.
