Houston goes where we decide. If he just wants to get back to Melbourne, North is as Melbourne-based as Carlton. And will pay us and him more.

lol it should be pick 11 and next years first.

We have no idea whether they’re talking about pick 11 being off the table as part of a package like that, or they’re simply talking about pick 11 and change ie 2nd rounder.

As I’ve said before

Players recently ooc or with a year to run have cost 2 firsts ie Taranto , jhf.

Players this year (some with clearly lower trade value ) are being talked up as 2 1sts or a 1st and second

Ie rioli , smith , Bolton

We’ve had to pay a 1st and 2nd rounder for Dixon and Ryder when they were walking (or being marched) out of their clubs. They were near all-Aus when they departed.

We have to say to teams, look, the price has been set, not as an arbitrary amount we’re making up for us to feel we’ve won , but by the afl. It’s what is being paid, it’s what we’ve been asked to pay.

"Port Adelaide are furious with Carlton and don't even want to deal with them until they are willing to offer up Pick 11. They are talking via Houston's manager, they aren't talking directly to each other." -

So weak and petulant.

Why would we be annoyed if we aren't going to actually accept it. Just say no and move on.

I just don't think we can deal with Carlton.

11 is pick 14 and that certainly doesn't work.

I'm certain we can would something out with North for 2 if we can get 12 from Gold Coast.

Carlton we just don't talk to unless they come knocking on the door with 2 firsts. Dan can stay.

In talks between the clubs fed through Houston’s management, Carlton has stated it intends to keep its pick 11 for this year’s draft while trading a future first round selection to a third club.

The Blues then want to send that third club’s first rounder to the Power, with uncontracted goal-sneak Matt Owies also raised in Houston trade discussions.

But Port powerbrokers say that is delusional when it comes to a 27-year-old two-time All-Australian who is contracted for three more years.

It’s understood Melbourne was happy to trade to first round picks to secure Houston before the Demons were engulfed in their latest crisis.

Yet the interest in Houston remains strong among rival clubs. Sources said North Melbourne was set to launch a major bid to bring Houston to Arden Street, with Alastair Clarkson playing a typically hands-on role.

Ultimately, Port Adelaide is highly unlikely to sanction Houston’s release for anything other than a strong return given it doesn’t own a first-round pick in one of the best drafts in years.

Player has to agree to the trade I'm not sure how often people need to be told this, it's up to North to talk him around or it's not happening.

Houston has 3 years left on his contract. If he doesn't agree he stays in Adelaide, which is further away from Melbourne than Arden Street.

Anyway he has said he is happy to stay if a deal can't be reached.

Correct. However his contract status and his publicly stated willingness to stay at Port if no gets deal done means there's a third option in play here which isn't always at play, which is we don't trade him at all. Carlton can't just say 'here's a future first, take it or leave it'. And if Houston really wants to get back to Melbourne, he might decide he'd rather go to his second choice Melbourne club than stay in SA.

Without any inside knowledge on this one, it seems pretty certain that's where we are at.

Houston's personal preference is Carlton, but knows we won't trade him unless we are appropriately compensated. So he's keeping North as the backup option as his strong desire is to return to Vic this year.

The fact that Sam Edmund said at the end that port aren’t that concerned because he just wants to get home to his girlfriend (rather than a family tragedy or personal situation). Makes me feel better to. You signed the 4 year deal Dan. You were happy to stay then

I think the only reason we’re entertaining a trade is to get into this draft specifically.

If we’re offered peanuts, wouldn’t surprised me if he stayed.

It has to be two solid first-round picks MINIMUM. That is clearly and fairly his value, and the fact that Melbourne already had it on the table makes it more feasible.

Shaun Burgoyne was worth two first-round picks (including a top 10) at a similar age to Houston, and from memory he was out-of-contract and only a one-time AA when traded. Houston is every bit as accomplished and valuable as Burgoyne was when we traded him. Maybe moreso.

Victorians not knowing how good Dan Houston is lolololol what’s new?
