I think the JHF deal was actually pretty reasonable for both parties. I know the players and fans and media carried on like pork chops, but i'm pretty sure the list managers would get along.
The JHF deal went down great because GWS wanted Cadman enough to show up halfway through, pull down their pants and offer everyone a turn. It was looking shaky until then.

Time for Port to put the foot down. Tell Dan it's North or nothing and give him the weekend to think about it. Also gives Blues and Pies a couple of days to sort their sh*t together and come back with a real offer.

Give our own future first and whatever we get for Soldo to Suns for 13 and Luko. If we get North's future first then try splitting that to say Freo for 10 or 11 this year and another future pick.

Here is a direct quote I was given last night by someone involved in the negotiation process with Collingwood. I didn't want to post it, but given Leppitsch's smug interview on Trade Radio I feel it is appropriate:

"Leppitsch is an arrogant fück, and I hate arrogant fücks."

Safe to say Leppitsch won't be getting a Christmas card from anyone at Alberton.

Leppitsch could be the arrogant arse as a player and coach, but he's in the list managers world, where it's all clipboards and laptops. Cripps just comes into the negotiating room and is all like......

Essendon are trying to move up the order so they get another pick before there academy player
I wouldn’t mind houston for Roos pick 2
Swap that with Essendon for pick 9 and future 1st maybe some late pick swaps

Roos get there man
Essendon get 2 top 10 talent this year and we get 2 good 1st round picks
Seems win win for everyone
Depends what player we have our eyes on. If he's expected to be there at 9 then it's a no brainer

It wasn't shaky at all. GWS stepped in because the AFL wouldn't let Port trade more future picks so Crippa got creative and was able to pull a multi-team mega trade to get both JHF and Rioli done in the one fell swoop.

Cripps and Rawlings had a chat over the weekend prior to the Monday of trade week 2022 and during that conversation they had agreed on a basic framework of what the trade would look like.

There was never any danger of that deal not getting done.

As if you need any more evidence the AFL wants the theatre of trade period to continue up until the last minute. I cancelled my Kayo subscription at the end of the minor round. I keep getting offers from Kayo to renew my subscription. The enticement - keep up to date with trade period news by watching Fox Footy’s daily Trade show.

So you just know the AFL is pressuring clubs to not announce deals, even if agreed, until late in the piece, especially the big trades.

Listening to trade radio and a caller gave a possible trade scenario which includes pick 6 and it got me thinking, you guys reckon we can mount a case to get pick 6 and maybe some other back-ended picks?

GC could follow the hawks example and say you know what? We’re tired of dealing with a club’s trade demands and use pick 6 for the Houston trade instead.

This is the trade:

NM send pick 2 to GC for pick 6 & 13

GC get inside any bids on academy players.

North get their guy at pick 6 and then send 13 plus F1 to us for Houston.

We on trade either our or NMs F1 to GC for Luko.
They aren't giving us 13 + F1. Their future one could be pick anywhere between 1-maybe 8.

NM give: Pick 2, NM F1, NM F2
NM get: Houston, STK F1, Port F2, STK F2

Draft hand: 2024 pick 25, 44, 62, 80, 2025 STK 1st round

STK give: Pick 8, STK F1, STK F2
STK get: Pick 2, Soldo, NM F2

Draft hand: 2024 pick 2, 7, 27, 47, 2025 NM 2nd round

Port give: Houston, Soldo, Port F2
Port get: Pick 8, NM F1

Draft hand: 2024 Pick 8, 39, 58, 2025 NM 1st round

It gets Houston to North Melbourne while they get to keep a first rounder next year, Saints get to upgrade their freebie from Battle to pick 2 while also keeping pick 7 and getting Soldo at the cost of downgrading their first rounder next year to North's second rounder and giving up their own 2nd rounder, and we get two first rounders for Houston, Soldo and our future second rounder.

It won't happen, but it's nice to figure out these scenarios on paper.

The JHF was actually pretty straight forward. That was a perceived shitshow simply because the North fan base was irate. But the pure negotiations between Cripps and Rawlings was smooth sailing.

North worked with us, because we did what we could to get them the best deal for Jason Horne-Francis. Part of that included Port being able to convince West Coast and GWS to give up more.

North could've torpedoed the whole deal by simply saying "We're not going to pick Cadman". Then GWS would've been far less desperate to move up from pick 3 to pick 1.

I don't understand why GC are so keen on this future first rounder.

They have an academy player next year who likes like a top 5 pick. I would think they would prefer points over position, and would be more interested in a few second rounders over a first roundrr

They have Beau Addinsall as well, plus there's going to be changes to the bidding system. I think they'll be very much interested in holding as many teens and 20s picks as possible to have flexibility when the new rules are learnt.
