Daniel Motlop

Yep. Chad's lost his contested marking ability, so what do we do? Play him forward, where contested marking is even more important than in defence.

Chad's only role left at AFL level is as a loose man in defence.

I think the game is catching up to him, and he should retire at season's end. What will happen though is choco will persuade him to play on in 2011.

Poor Motlop. Port Adelaide just isn't as fun as it used to be. He needs to HTFU and focus on playing to his potential. Pity he doesn't have the mental strength to do it. The sad thing is I don't think any club will able to accommodate him.

Well even if there is disagreement about Motlop on this board the TV commentators are at least in agreement on him i.e. negative influence on the team through not being a team player, only concerned about himself and should probably be traded northwards.

I don't mind Daniel, but he isn't a FF.

He would be much better if we had Schulz CHF, Salter FF, D Stewart FP. Motlop would be the 4th forward, ebert would benefit.

David S passed comment, IMO Chad should be over and out and Salter played his role.

At least our tall to small ratio is starting to look better.

As if, that forward line is too structured to be our forward line and is way to logical :p

Does anyone get the feeling that Motlops bad year has been contributed to any by the arrival or Laidley?

Wasn't one of the reasons he wanted out of North was he didn't get along with him?

Honestly, Bad game all round for him today, just about the only good thing I saw him do all day was a mark 35 out and a play-on handball over the top to I think it was Davenport, goal. Other than that, wasted opportunities and brought the team down with bad attitude.

football is played by men with ego's. I think we all understand that. I think some ego's need to be reigned in at times. I can't remember many good games from Motlop since that Fox story, I can remember supporter angst about him however. Given his 2009 wasn't stellar (and he wasn't on his pat malone there), I'd have thought further stroking his ego was a little foolhardy.

Actually statistically 2009 was his best year.

http://finalsiren.com/PlayerStats.asp?PlayerID=414&SeasonID=2009

You wont remember too many good games in 2009 because he only played 3 after that story. I put it up on You Tube on 21 May 2009. His next game was against Sydney who Roos paid special attention to and he had a poor game but no worse than his teammates. But that is partly due to Choco's SCG theory that if Sydney play X no. of defenders he plays X-1 or X-2 forwards to try to win the game. It's a failed BS strategy and Mots was always going to struggle.

He did an ankle in that game and then missed 2 games. He came back against the Bulldogs and did his ankle half way thru the game and then had surgery and had a pin inserted in it. He missed 8 games as a result of the surgery. He play against Brisbane in rd 21 and did ok, but missed rd 22 because his ankle was sore after the Brisbane game.

So after the Fox Sports News story he played 2.5 games and missed 11 with his ankle injury. No wonder people can't remember him playing well in 2009 after that news story. So you can't say it was foolish for the marketing department to set up a small part of the 2010 advertising campaign around his freakish skills. You would have to say that after we were 4-2 in the early part of 2009, that the Fox Sports News story was the most positive media story the club had for the remainder of 2009!

Does anyone get the feeling that Motlops bad year has been contributed to any by the arrival or Laidley?

Nah, I think his bad year is largely down to the massive off-field issues he is apparently having. Breaking up with his Mrs and hooking up with a new one. I'm guessing kids are an issue as is his ex.

Maybe the correct thing for the club to do is give him a month to go off and deal with it - bring in Salter to p[lay his role, but rather than just burn Motlop when hes having serious issues, see what they can do to help.

So again we have a player's personal issues not recognized as affecting team structure. We the fans get a misleading picture and start bagging the guy until someone bothers to fill in just enough detail not to be too intrusive. I heard a commentator say "some guys just look like they don't care" in regards to Motlop after one missed shot. And what the %^&* would he know ? FFS let Mots go sort stuff out and come back fit and 100% ok upstairs and wanting to be there.

That was the frustration we had with the Motlop family, both boys were extremely talented and were able to do the freaky things at times but discipline and focus was badly lacking.

Laidley had big issues with Motlop while both were at North, could Laidley moving to Port be a factor? I am not sure what kind of contact he has with the players in his assistant role so it might have nothing to do with it.

Just need to give him a few more weeks - think he's maybe missing Tredrea's presence more than anyone else in the forward line.

Could have had 3 goals 1 yesterday if it was not for 5cm and he would have been one of the reason we could have won (most games decided by less than 3 kicks normally have a lot riding on the way a ball bounces throughout the game).

Tredrea still commands one of the better defenders from each team and can open up our forward line and he draws a pack which Motlop can either fly over or stay back for the spill - Tredrea has lost his ability to take the pack marks but he is one of the best key forward below his knees and get the ball out to guys like Mots for shots.

If he isn't either kicking goal or setting them up in the coming 2 or 3 weeks then we should give him a spell in the SANFL.

Every single post on the first page of this thread had to be edited hahaha :thumbsu:

That was the title being changed i think lol

These threads sure change a lot after a couple of days after people calm down eh..

The dumbest thing about creating abusive threads personally attacking player X is they generate "you should see how the spuds on the </club> board are handling it" mockery on other boards. I went and peeled 6 potatoes right after the game, and it occurred to me that was 1 for each of our midfielders. Operating a sharp vegetable peeler did wonders to calm me down. Only then did I get stuck into the bottle.

Yeah Motlop could do with a week or two in the SANFL to think things over.

Mostly yes, and it is painfully time-consuming. People should stop and have a little think before they fire off a sensational thread title ...

trade

an honest effort of someone 60% of his ability offers more over a game

What was it Choco said; he'd rather Motlop at 70% than Salter/Stewart at 100%?

Williams has pandered to him and let him get away with way too much, it's not salvagable now.

Send him to the GC, see if you can get a decent pick for him, move on.

You guys have some real quality tall forwards in Stewart and Salter, the problem is Choco rarely plays them, and when he does, out of position.

ET - I've posted on here a few times when there is something interesting going on; I don't think I've ever trolled or sunk the boot though ;)

Look I can understand the man is having some problems at home, most of us have been there before.

However it doesn't matter to me when he is out on the football field representing the club. He needs to be 100% committed to the cause and that means doing the team things. Motlop at present is a liability, he needs either a lengthy spell in the SANFL or a month from all footy. Then he must come back through the SANFL.

The 4 goals in his first game of the year were not from a solid 4 qtr effort, they were the usual Motlop 10 minutes of a game good times.

Drop him now, while there is still a chance of some respectability to be gained for the season.

You can't preach disciplined football and have a Daniel Motlop in your team !
How hard is it for Williams and the selectors to grasp that most basic of concepts ?
Motlop would be great at the Gold Coast or Western Sydney unfortunately, we can't wait until Williams **** s off to coach Western Sydney, taking Motlop with him. We need to drop him and forget about him if we are serious about building a proper, disciplined football side.

I think that was about SB, not Motlop.

He also repeatedly said that Shaun was our best player - long before he had to consider trying to pump up his value at trade week.

Amazing then that he became the greatest underachiever on our list with an overinflated opinion of himself, wasn't it?
