Its pretty amazing that 3 years in a row the #7 draft pick has shot on the scene and been a star straight out of the gates.

Selwood then Palmer and now Rich.
The guys all class and as much as part of me wants him to fail. re: Hill debacle i cant help but wish him the best. BTW Hill goes alright as well, i think both clubs won there.

Nothing about the Hill situation is a debacle. He's going to be a special player.

Freo earned a lot of respect IMO by not letting the media dictate their agenda and backing their own judgement.

Not now its not as it has proven a good selection but at the time it was seen that way. The negative press was absurd.

But its done now and just like you guys with Rich, we have an awesome talent.

Good to see the WA talent doing so well:thumbsu:. It's no wonder it was such a hard decision for the Eagles between Rich and NickNat.

I've seen a lot of Brisbane this year as a lot of the games are televised, and I've got to say, he is becoming a favorite of mine. Rarely looks flustered, composure personfied and uses the footy so well. I reckon early in the year, when he was missing targets it was a lot to do with his team mates not realising the depth he gets in his kicks.

looks a 200 gamer already, what will he be like when he's had 2 pre-seasons under his belt??

Daniel Rich continues strong debut season with Brisbane Lions
Article from:

MAKE sure you have some fun like teenagers do - that's Simon Black's recipe for Daniel Rich successfully continuing his sensational debut season for the Brisbane Lions.
Rich has reached Brisbane's AFL bye weekend with the challenge of playing out the season strongly, which often proves beyond a first-year player.
Brisbane's first-round draft pick is a $1.85 favourite to become the first Brisbane Lion to win the NAB Rising Star, ahead of Adelaide's Andy Otten ($7).
Brisbane Bears' Nathan Buckley (1993) and Chris Scott (1994) won the first two awards for the season's leading AFL youngster.
Rich, who turned 19 this month, laid an equal career-high eight tackles against Hawthorn last Sunday and is ranked 10th in tackles in the AFL. He is also ranked eighth in the inside-50s category.
"It's a long year and it's important to have an escape from footy, so it doesn't suffocate you," said Black, an authority on consistency and resilience as he has missed just seven games since 2000.
"He enjoys playing a bit of golf and does a bit of surfing, so if he keeps those things up, for sure I think he'll be right.
"It's a positive that he's played senior footy in WA the last two years and played against men. Admittedly it's not AFL level, but he's a level headed and quite mature kid.
"He's physically mature as well, so he doesn't get bullied around. But the length of the season can find out 10-year players as well."
Right from round 1, the recruit from Perth club Subiaco played like someone who thought he was in control.
Last Sunday he reacted to some goading by Jordan Lewis, one of the Hawks hard-nuts, by pointing to his chin and invited Lewis to hit it.

Brilliant. Not much that the opposition can do after that. They can either hit him and be out for 2 months, or they do nothing and have nowhere to go from there.

Mid Season Rating

Daniel Rich A A stunning first season. Wins the footy, uses it as well as anybody and appears to be comfortably coping with the physical demands. Hard to believe he has played just 12 games.

Lions cashing in on Rich

With a surfboard tucked under his arm and the Coolangatta sun adding another shade of white to his bleached locks, there was more danger of Daniel Rich being mistaken for a local surfer than an AFL whiz kid during his week of mid-season leisure.

The 19-year-old Brisbane Lions rookie used the split round to hit the home break of another bright-white blond, former world champion surfer Mick Fanning, and freshen his mind and body after an introduction to senior football that has proven beyond all doubt he has the game to match the hype.

The seventh pick in the AFL draft has been a sensation in the midfield of Michael Voss since wowing fans in round one with decision-making beyond his 19 years and a booming left boot that had the purists drooling into their pies.

The round one Rising Star nomination was a given with that 21-possession effort but more importantly for Rich and the Lions, the kid from Western Australia has been anything but a one-game wonder. His body is robust for a rookie and the consistency he brings to his trade is already attracting attention from taggers, which at this stage of his career he views as flattery rather than an annoyance.

Not that anyone squeezing into their wetsuits at Snapper Rocks that day took any notice as Rich and girlfriend Justine, who has flown over from Perth to settle in Brisbane, took to the water.

Nobody recognised him then, or on most days outside the walls of the Gabba. The blessing of relative anonymity is one of the real bargaining chips the Lions can offer prospective recruits. In the case of the softly-spoken and intensely shy Rich, it's a situation that is tailor made.
"It's good here in Queensland, where you slip under the radar a bit. I love it in Queensland, that kind of lifestyle. You don't get a lot of attention," he said.

"It's good to get away and get in the water. It's always good to have things outside of footy. It's good to freshen the mind. I love playing golf and getting away and surfing."

Surfing trips with Simon Black and working on his wonky golf game ("I'm a battler but I love it") have kept Rich occupied off the field as he adjusts to life without his family, who remain thousands of kilometres away on the west coast.

It's a situation that midfield comrade Black, another left-footer who migrated from the west, faced when he joined Brisbane from East Fremantle in 1998. Rich credits the mentoring of Black, among others, for smoothing the path to some early success.

"Living away from home has been the biggest thing," Rich said. "The step from where I've been into AFL is a big step footy-wise as well.
"There have been a lot of people who have helped out in a lot of different ways."

The rise of Rich has been in stark contrast to the lanky kid who he may oppose at the Gabba on Saturday night when the last-placed Demons come to town.

Melbourne schoolboy Jack Watts, the number one draft pick, has been picked apart by pundits, including former Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews, after two underwhelming efforts for the Demons over the past fortnight.
The Demons are expected to keep the faith with Watts again this weekend, and Rich urged the doubters to avoid jumping to hasty conclusions before declaring Watts an out-and-out bust.

"He's a year younger. He's a really good player. He's got lots of natural talent. He's a great bloke and I wish him all the best. I know he's going to do really well," Rich said.

"I feel a bit for him. He's still a raw talent. He's still only 17."
Voss is a fan of Watts but knows he has reaped a more immediate reward from his draft pick than Melbourne has with Watts.

Voss, too, had kind words for Watts, saying the senior football Rich had played in WA and his extra year of development meant his prized youngster was always going to blossom sooner than Melbourne's.

"Why does one child walk before another child? It's purely on development. They'll learn to walk. Jack Watts will learn but Daniel Rich just learned a little bit sooner," Voss said.

Sympathetic as he may be, Voss wouldn't trade his draft choice for quids. He struck it rich and he knows it.

"He's (Rich) working very hard and he's always looking to get better. He is always looking for more. He's added value to our football club right away," Voss said.

"For us, I'm glad he learned to walk sooner."

Brisbane Lions lock down Daniel Rich and fellow young guns
Article from:

June 26, 2009 12:00am

THE Brisbane Lions have taken a key step towards establishing the club's next dynasty by locking away superstar teen Daniel Rich and a swag of his brightest young teammates.

The Lions are understood to have secured new deals or in-principle agreements with Rich, Lachlan Henderson, Matthew Leuenberger, James Polkinghorne and Tom Collier.

Rich has played just 12 games and has another 18 months to run on his AFL standard draftee contract, but the club and player have proved to be so mutually beneficial to each other a new deal was struck.

He has already captured the attention of the entire league, he is the frontrunner to win this year's Rising Star award and was paid the ultimate compliment from reigning premiers Hawthorn last round by being assigned a tag.

Rich said he was enjoying his football with Brisbane where he was not subjected to the same degree of media scrutiny as other first-round draft picks experience in Melbourne and his home town Perth.

"It is good in Queensland where you slip under the radar a bit. I love the Queensland lifestyle, you don't get much attention. It would be a bit different (in Perth), that's why I am thankful of being in Brisbane," he said.

"Living away from home has been the biggest thing, and footy-wise going from where I had been (in the WAFL) to the AFL that was another step (up), but it hasn't been too hard.

"There have been a lot of people who have helped out at the club in lots of different ways.

"Guys in the midfield, Simon Black, Luke Power ... I have learnt so much from them every day."

Good news that we are getting signatures of our best young players and extending their contracts beyond 2010. Sorry GC17. :D

Chuffed to see Richy so committed to the club! Almost certainly a future captain of the Brisbane Lions.

It's hard not to make Vossy jr statements.

There's only a couple of reasons I can think of that he would re-sign so early on in his current contract (he has what, 18 months left?):

- His manager is a complete moron and doesn't know how to negotiate a contract.

- Brisbane are so keen to retain him that he was offered a spectacular contract that most first year players could never dream of. If that's the case him being a future captain would be almost certain.

- Rich is loving the Qld lifestyle and we're locking him in before the honeymoon period is over.

- Stopping poaching by GC17.

I can settle for any of those reasons, because he re-signed.

Think there is a fair bit of manlove between Rich and Vossy, Vossy can see a clone of himself I think. great news:thumbsu:

Yup!

Obi-Wan Kenobi & Luke Skywalker.

Mr Miyagi & Daniel Laruso.

Michael Voss & Daniel Rich.
