While much is made of Rich's pinpoint left foot, his decision making has been a standout for me.

In clearance drills, there is none of this "handballing to a flatfooted teammate in a worse position" bullshit that we excelled at last year. If he handballs, it is generally to advantage. If the option isn't there, he doesn't panic and will either back himself to find space or at least blast it forward off the boot as a last resort.

He doesn't just have the brawn and the boot, he has the brain. One of those blokes who thinks 1/2 a second quicker than the average footballer and "has time".

While we're all very excited by Rich's potential, until he plays his first game can everyone please keep your hands where we can see them :)

Having said that though, he has the makings of a bloody good player!

I've only seen Rich at training once so it's not possible to gain anything really accurate, but does anyone else see the resemblance between Rich and Barry Cable?

Quick feet, in and under, not afraid to mix it, a busy footballer.

Further to this, something which I just recall from training the other day was Rich drawing an opponent to him, releasing the handball at the absolute last second, knowing that he would be smashed as soon as the ball left his hand. Showed guts as well as skill.

How cool is Daniel Rich???

1. He hasn't played a game for us yet, and Puma are using him in advertisements;

2. He's so cool, Puma didn't even give him a shoe! :p *lol*

With midfield leader Simon Black (broken hand) sidelined (for the NAB Cup), there could be the chance for first-round draftee Daniel Rich and other youngsters to shine.
"That will be good for us because we've relied on those sorts of players for a long time so it will be good to see how the others step up," Voss said.

Lions keep talented youngster in media cotton wool

THE Brisbane Lions have gagged outstanding prospect Daniel Rich in a bid to reduce the pressure on him in his debut AFL season.
Coach Michael Voss has placed Rich off-limits to the media in the countdown to the Lions' season-opening NAB Cup match against St Kilda at Carrara tomorrow.

Nicknamed "Bam Bam" in reference to the cartoon baby with freakish strength, Rich, 18, was the Lions' top pick in the national draft and has been named in the squad for the match. He was widely expected to go in the first three overall picks and the Lions were surprised he lasted down to their first at No. 7.

Rich, who stands 183cm and weighs 83kg, has already played in two senior West Australian premierships for Subiaco and has been tipped to quickly make his senior debut.

"We just want to let the kid play footy," Voss said of the media ban.

"His challenge is just getting himself physically right and ready to play.

"We want his footy to do the talking. There has been a lot spoken about him. It is great that we have got him and we have seen some great early signs. But at the same time we don't want him to have the unfair expectations that he has to dominate the game.

"It is pretty important that we just let him concentrate on his footy.

"Obviously he has a big body, so he will be able to adapt but I don't want to put big expectations on him.

"I want him to be able to enjoy his footy. We don't think that every week he has to turn up and put on a show for us. We just want him to enjoy himself, string a few games together, play the football he knows he can play and if that translates into success on the field and he plays AFL football this year, that is great.

"But there are some things we need him to concentrate on and if he does that the rest will look after itself."

Brisbane powerbroker Graeme Allan has compared Rich's left-foot kick to Hawthorn's Norm Smith medallist Luke Hodge and said in November Rich kicked the ball "as well as anyone in the competition".

Voss became aware of Rich's talent when they met at the AIS and, when drafted, Rich said he had always admired Voss and was looking forward to playing under him.

Rich is one of 10 former WA players on the Lions' books.

When Daniel Rich does a pushup, he isn’t lifting himself up, he’s pushing the Earth down.

Haha, brilliant GG.

I can actually picture Lioness penning that article.

Ha ha :D NO WAY would I write such an article! I might post a lot but I know that quantity does not mean quality! :p

Funny work there, GG. :thumbsu:

As you can see, I haven't really been checking out Rich's Roster Watch. I'm happy to sit back and let his footy do the talking. SO much has been said about this kid. I'm hoping it's all true. A big game for him on Saturday night.

Armed with a booming left foot kick and an even bigger reputation, Rich won two WAFL premierships by the age of 18 and is considered a shoo-in to make his AFL debut in the season proper's opening round next month.

Highly touted Lions recruit Daniel Rich was solid on debut without being spectacular.

With his parents watching from the sideline on his debut, the 18-year-old drafted from Subiaco missed two first-half shots at goal but showed plenty of promise running through the midfield.

The Lions would have been pleased with youngster Daniel Rich.

In the limited time he had in the thick of the action, Rich showed poise and confidence beyond his years in heavy midfield traffic.

If there were highlights they came with some brilliant flashes of play by first-round draft kick Daniel Rich who threatened to kick a supergoal and justified Voss' decision to gag him.

Voss had said that Rich must allow his football to speak for him and Rich and his already well-developed foot skills did just that in a night dominated by handball.

Rich was impressive during his time onfield, used primarily as an interchange player throughout, but showed real class when he dogged and weaved through the congested midfield.

As always, pre-season form can be terribly misleading, but there was a lot to like about some of the Lions rookies in their 1-8-8 (65) to 0-8-8 (56) win.

In particular, midfielder Daniel Rich showed considerable potential and all going well, will develop into a crowd favourite at the Gabba.

Bearing a resemblance to Geelong star Gary Ablett Jr -- in the days when the latter had hair -- the blond Rich did nice things in his stints on the field, to back up his record of having already played in two senior premierships with WAFL club Subiaco.

Wasn't hugely impressed by his disposal (although I suspect some of that is due to the insane wraps on him by everyone), but his work through traffic really did impress me. He went on a couple of decent runs through an (admittedly haphazard) Saints midfield last night.

his disposal was ok without being great. considering its his first game of the season and the conditions, many kicks from everyone went astray.

i liked that he didn't look out of his depth or lost, and i like that he managed to get himself a few shots on goal. but i still think he was passing it to tyler i think it was on the lead, and just went over his hands.

11 touches off the bench was great, and a few shots on goal makes him a great bench player to start with. great things for the future :thumbsu:

Not sure how much of it showed up on TV, but some of his off the ball stuff was really good for a rookie. Some very smart shepherds.

His disposal is talked up for a reason, he just didn't have much time to spot up his kicks last night. Give him some time to adjust to the pace of AFL footy and you'll see what the fuss is about.

Rich had 11 possessions, 9 of them contested (highest for the Lions), and 4 of them clearances (2nd highest for the Lions).

Did he spend more than half the game on the bench? Those stats are very, very impressive if so.

another spot i noticed of rich, was he was strong over the ball. there was one moment where the ball was loose around half forward i think it was, he chased it up, got front position and got over the ball, knowing someone was right behind him ready to tackle. He didn't panic, he held his ground over the ball without collecting it for a second whilst he picked a handball target and waiting for them to get into a good position. He then collected the ball, drew the player behind him, got tackled, kept his arms free and unloaded a handball to a free lions player.

its the little things like this that give you great hope. rookies normally wouldn't have the confidence or the footy smarts to do that. He always looked like he knew what he was doing. Great to see he had some good center clearances and contested possessions to. top effort
