Daniel Wells continues to frustrate me

Re: I hate Daniel Wells

Seriously, the most frustrating player in our 22 - has by far the most talent and fails to deliver on a consistent basis. He plays 6 or 7 great games a season, 8 average games and the rest are poor. Not good enough for a player in his 6th season with 100+ games experience.

He was lazy tonight. He stopped running hard during the first quarter, he goes soft with a hard tag. He should kick 20+ goals a year and has kicked what...6 this season. Continually fluffs his kicks at goal - he is mentally weak and often gets psych'ed out of games by his opponent(s).

It is a startling that considering his talent, no-one rates him as a potential captain/ leader.

I expect far more of him.

He wasn't to blame for tonight's loss. Harvs, Simmo, Power, Sinkers, Thommo and Harro all played poorly after quarter time. Harding, Flash, Hale and Thomas tried to get into the game but couldn't.

Spud, Pratty, Gibbo, Urqs, Watt, Drew, the Echelon, Edwards, Brady, Scotty McMahon all battled hard and deserve praise for effort.

We played poorly, Laidley was outcoached and could have made changes. The Swans played better football and deserved the win.

Very strange decision to play 3 talls in the forward line with a forecast of rain???? With hindsight, Thommo shouldn't have played.

You are kidding. Thats half the team. If all these guys were so good, how come we got pumped?

Gibson had his pants pulled down and so did the rest of the backline. McMahon was rubbish. Drew and Edwards hardly touched the ball and Rawlings was in the mid field which in case you didn't noticed got hammered.

I actually said they battled hard and deserve praise; it's hard to play good football when your midfielders are thrashed after quarter time.

Re: I hate Daniel Wells

I'm sorry I don't agree at all, Wells has averaged 25 plus possessions last 7 odd games, he was one of our better players tonight. Sure his second half wasn't great, but nobody else was good either. I'm more frustrated with Harris, its time for him to go, he can't perform on the big stage, time for Swallow or Leigh Adams.

I think Harro has struggled with his newish role this year - lots more running and link up player. Harro was always quite one-dimensional: win the ball in congested packs and use vision to find a outside running player. He does that well. This season Laids has asked to him to play a more uncontested style of play and he isn't quick or agile enough to play this role.

I think you're right we miss Swallow a lot this year.

Possessions don't tell the whole story, because Wellsy rarely wins his own ball. He doesn't play 4 quarters consistently enough despite his reasonably high possession count. And hey, the great midfielders average 35+ possessions a game.

Re: I hate Daniel Wells

Is it a surprise that our 'outside mid' went missing at the same time as our 'inside mids' started getting their bums smacked??

It wasn't Wells' opponent (Kirk/Bolton) getting all the clearances that led to the loss.

If our inside mids had broken even Wells would have continued on in the 2nd half. That's the way it works.

I think we're very lucky to have Wells and there are few in the league I'd trade him for. And I sure don't HATE him, that's a 2yo thing to say.

Re: I hate Daniel Wells

as a non north supporter i dont think he is soft, although he definately doesnt have a 'hard body'. whenever i watch him play i always feel he is gonna get hurt when he goes in tough

i feel he needs to be on some extra weights program this pre-season

Yep, fair enough - it was childish. FWIW, I actually tried to edit the title of the thread, but couldn't.

I should have said - he frustrates the hell out of me.

He is an outside mid true, but he stills goes missing all too often even when we are winning the ball.

Why does he still get so nervous nailing goals from 50 on the run? We know he practices this at training day in, day out and the players and coach have encouraged him to add this skill to his game for years. He goes to water.

Re: I hate Daniel Wells

The guy had 12 contested possessions and lead our side for clearances, I know we'd all like him to stroll through like superman and win the match but its a team game and unfortunately we are very thin for players who will win the hard ball whereas Sydney had several rotations.

Re: I hate Daniel Wells

Although he didn't get a great deal of it in the second half, he looked like he was still putting in an effort. He just looked really drained and after 14 contested touches in the first half in slippery conditions he probably deserved to be.

Give the guy a break. He's had a great year. His work rate has improved dramatically and he's harder at the ball than he was in past seasons.

Not sure if you made it to the game or not but this really is not true. We watched him closely from the stands in the second half and his workrate was really disappointing. Did not run hard enough at all. Very similar to his form in the first two/three rounds this year.

This thread is a joke.

Wells has been one of our best since round 12. In fact other then Boomer he has been next cab off the rank.

Our whole team was terrible on Sat Night. Thats everyone, including the coaches.

Can anyone explain why Wells looks so good when the opposition doesn't bother to tag him, but goes missing when they apply a heavy tag?

OK, he started well on Saturday, but might as well have stayed in the rooms at 1/2 time.

I don't think any player really handles a tag all that well. It's just that some clubs work out ways to deal with it. For instance, if Wells played for Geelong, he'd have Ling, Enright, Corey & Rooke providing shepherds for him as they do for Ablett and Bartel, and he'd be ripping sides apart. This is what Simpson and Rawlings should be doing for Wells and Harvey but for whatever reason they don't. I also think his football tends to mirror his personality. Unassuming. Even occasionally when he does take the opposition on, you can almost see him stopping himself.

If you took his ability and added David King's arrogance, there wouldn't be any talk of trading for Kerr. We'd have the best midfielder in the comp. Easily.

I reckon Wells' game Sat nite sums up his career. He was great in the 1st half - 14 disposals & handled the wet weather brilliantly.
Comes out after 1/2 time & was more useless than the dcik on my body. WHY?
I think this has been his best year BUT it's time we accept the fact that he ain't gonna be a Kerr or Judd etc. He is going to be serviceable in most games & win us the occasional game but to think he will win a Brownlow or be a top-notch midfielder is wrong IMO.

This has been Wells' main issue his whole career. Surely a good coach such as Dean Laidley should've rectified this 3 years ago........
