Many on here crowing about how they knew Wells'recruitment would be a disaster and celebrating their own intelligence. I assume you will be just as willing to say where you stood on the Mayne recruitment?
I wouldn’t be using the Mayne recruitment as a benchmark.

He played a few damned good games and seems to have endeared himself to the playing group and club.

For mine he showed enough to see that it was almost a great idea to bring him in but injuries robbed us of too many games for it to be considered a success.

Did he get himself in the best nic, did he give himself every chance, I simply don't know but, he sure played a few great games and gave us a few tantalizing glimpses of what might have been.

Played 19 games in last season at NM and 4th in their B&F . Put on a clinic against us during 2016 cutting us to ribbons. If he didn’t badly break his foot or do his posterior cruiciate he would have played a lot more footy for us. When did you foresee these injuries?

Yep, if the perpetually injured guy wasn't injured so often he would have played a lot more footy for us. Insightful...

Good to see you and sp_10 are on the same page re this “horrific” recruiting

14 gamers are too hard too split.

15 gamers on the other hand clearly

1. Brereton
2. Wells
3. Morwood
Wells’ games were a higher level overall than Brereton’s games. Dermie certainly was wonderful for Sav Rocca but Wells when he played for us gave some sublime moments.

He took a fairly decent pay cut for this season so probably 300-400k mark at a guess, he was on reportedly 600k originally.

Be even less than that I'd have thought given he was apparently playing for a base payment and reliant upon match payments to boost it.

All match payments need to fit under the cap so wether he plays or doesn't that cap space is technically used up.

So even if wells only earned say 250k with one game they would of had to fit his potential earnings (inc match payments) into our cap before the season started.

So in terms of cap space you would imagine 300 to 400k will be freed up.

Good point.

As skillful as they come, a true gentlemen of the sport. A gamble the club needed to make but didn't work, brought a sense of class and dignity to our team. You will be missed and its a shame you couldn't get the body right for one last truly fitting end to your career.

Hats off to a man who at his best was amongst the elite of the elite in the league.

Same page as me! In the three years he spent on the list he was never once AFL fit (even when not injured) and he was paid $100k per match. That’s horrific to anyone capable of thinking critically.

I’d like to say that he had a profoundly positive influence on the group, but the timing of his retirement stinks of him throwing in the towel as soon as it was confirmed we weren’t going with him...

He was a tremendous player in full flight at North and will be fondly remembered as the magical player he was for them!

You should listen to Bucks on Whateley this morning.

He said the club asked the younger players which senior player has had the most profound effect/influence on them this year and Wells was the one constant across all of the feedback.

He also said that during match sim at training on Friday, Wells participated up until halftime when he came to Bucks and said he can't go on anymore physically. He felt he couldn't keep up with the younger players.

I normally respect your comments on here, and I agree the deal was ultimately a failed one, but I think you're off the mark with the comment that goes to Wells' character.

I heard them and find it real hard to buy in on comments like those. There’s zero chance Buckley would be anything other than glowing toward the departing player. By the by he should have made that call 12 months ago when it was clear he was done!

Buckley could have found a number of inconsequential ways to be complementary towards Wells.
That he chose to use Wells’ support to young players is instructive and definitely credible.
