Apex, friendships are irrelevant in professional sport. That my answer.
If you can’t answer the question, I’ll have to assume you’re lying about having played team sports. As such, if you haven’t played a team sport then you wouldn’t be able to understand the link between enjoyment and performance, and the effects that friendships within a playing group has on that.

Apex, I played team sport with my friends and I loved it. I didn’t place professional sport. Your question is irrelevant.

Of course friendships are important and they matter. You're not gonna play well with people and not in sync with them if they hated you or you weren't mates in some way. The more you enjoy someone's company, it helps you enjoy playing together. It all matters in a team sport.

True Jen, but elite professional athletes don’t need that to play well and win.

maybe doesn't need it, but you'll certainly enjoy team performance and the team and playing together a lot more. After all, its a team sport, not an individual one where you can be selfish.

And Jen you may see some of this when attending training and how much camaraderie can add to the group.

Exactly. Remember that game last 2018? when Darcy pulled in sore in the warm up in Sydney? The affection between him and Grundy was telling. What if Darcy, Roughy, Howe did not get along and enjoy each other's company, do you think the backline would have worked so well last year? I think not. You need bonding and friendships between teammates. You don't have to be best mates or anything, but to enjoy each other's company goes a long way to making a team 10x better than it was if they were not.

Spoken like someone who’s never played team sport.

Why on earth would you choose to argue against the worth of friendship in team success? It seems a strange standpoint for a textbook supporter like yourself to want to take on such an issue. :(

Um, what the **** are you on about? I’ve played team sport, and yes, friendships are important.

Professional sport is what I’m talking about. Friendship means very little in relation to winning. It’s all about the talent on the list.

By the way, it’s nice that you would take the time to bait me. I love you man.

Because I was talking about professional team sport.

Did somebody turn off the IQ light on this board?

The link between friendship and enjoyment is real and so is the link between enjoyment and performance. Whether or not it’s a professional environment is irrelevant. Take some time to think about what the difference was between 17/18 for Collingwood and why they performed so differently with largely the same list.

I disagree. From a personal perspective there were blokes I played footy with that are flogs. Once we crossed the line though I had their back and off-field relationships impacting the team are a black mark on the individuals not an indicator of the need for friendship amongst players.

For an AFL reference Tyson Edwards and Andrew McLeod didn’t speak to each other for the second half of their careers. You never would have known and I guarantee there are plenty of frosty relationships throughout the league that work on the field.

Bringing it back to relevant discussion a player having friends amongst the playing group is important for contractual purposes because it makes the grind easier and prevents them from feeling isolated. Along with money, success, lifestyle and employment location it’s a factor in contract talks.

The players and coaches had a highly effective professional relationship in 2018. I don’t see where friendship comes into it, other than the point Sco made above.

Of course not everyone are good blokes or someone you are friends with, doesn't have to be everyone, but even if there is a handful, it'll only make you play better.

Friendships can also hinder performance. Remember when Swanny and co kept passing the ball to Dids to get him another contract? Fortunately the club were professional in their decision to let him go.

Worst decision. He was my fav player at the time. Hated how he was treated, but he was part of the group that Bucks wanted to split up.

Worst decision? Dids was at the end of his great career. It was time to end.

Friendships also turn sour which sometimes results in good players leaving, or the wrong players being drafted and retained on a list.

Seeing Grundy and Moore enjoying each other’s company is nice, but is a minor factor in team performance.

Improving the ability of our mids to capitalise on Grundy’s dominance will be the biggest influence on our performance.

he should have retired as a pie, not basically throw him out of a job.
He did retire as a Pie. Very few players retire on their own accord, most have to be told it’s time.
