After todays game, i've had a long, hard look at our list. Not one where i say we need to turn over 18-20 players on the list, it is not time for the panic button just yet, but simply to summarise where i think we are at. I think our future has plenty of strengths, being our key backs, key forwards, medium forwards and rucks. I will go into these later in detail. However, our weaknesses, they are blatantly obvious..Small defenders, and skillful midfielders.

The midfield one i'm a bit stumped on. Although badly beaten in this area today, i think winning the contested footy is not a big concern for us, with Watson, Welsh, Hocking, Lonergan, and yes Myers, play him there please Knights. However, this skill level of our group of midfielders is absolutely appalling. These guys above, to go along with Prismall, Stanton, Winderlich, can they hit a target? I must admit i've been one who's bought into the speculation that we were building a very nice midfield, but for f*** sake, it means nothing having a midfield that can win the ball if you can't hold onto the ball. This is an area that certainly needs attention paid to it if we are to have any success, and i see one way in doing this is Dempsey. Dempsey has a bit of class, a bit of polish and poise about him, and i'd be moving him from the backline onto the wing, and into the midfield. But that's a start. Guys like Prismall, Winderlich and Stanton, these 3 in particular who are probably our more 'outside' midfielders, simply need to hit targets consistently.

The second position is our small defenders. Now i have never hidden it, infact i've voiced it on several occassions that i am not a Slattery fan and do not believe he should be in the side. However, having thought about this deeply, i'd keep him in the side..match-up permitting. I'd be radical here and move Davey into the backline.
Let us look at Davey's game for a second. Quick, there is no denying that, continually praised for his defensive side and chasing, yet he cannot contribute on the offensive end. He fumbles, all round he is just shocking with the ball in his hands. Now Ballantyne is by no means a star, however he was very very impressive today. But why? Because poor Slattery can't keep up, he's no match for someone with Ballantyne's pace. Ballantyne, Betts, Byrnes, Rioli, are we expecting Slattery to play on these sorts of guys? He will get dominated, no question about it. Why not let Davey use his pace and defensive side to his game to shut out these sorts of players that consistently kill us?
But this is not a call to drop Slattery, he still has a role, he simply may be more suited to playing on the chapman type forwards, or the more solid, marking forwards. But simply saying Slattery is our best small defender, therefore we play him on the best small forward, no matter what type of player he is, is going to get us in strife.

I'm not sure if Davey has played defense before, but the way he is playing, you cannot continue to pick him as a forward. I see no harm in attempting to turn him into a defender, with the possibility of a massive gain to be had.

I don't think that I have seen Davey ever spoil a ball in his life. Probably too short to play defence. He is good defensively when the ball is either on the ground or someone is running with it, but if it is in the air he struggles. Not that I have ever seen him in defence. Also would leave a gap in the forward line, that would have to be filled by someone like Jetta.
Interesting proposal though.

When I first saw this thread, I must admit and thought straight away, what are you smoking.

After reading it and thought, you could be onto something. We are constantly being smashed over the last couple of years by the competitions small forwards, albeit not very good ones....ie Betts, Ballantyne and the like. It has been Slattery who has had the jobs in the past and has been constantly smashed in this area. We could throw McVeigh or Welsh back there, but after watching McVeigh last year and today and Welsh over the past 2 weeks, the speed of the game is getting to quick for them.

Froggy, I think would be a good choice back there. His defensive skills are excellent, no question about that, but he isn't going to kick you your couple of goals to threaten opposition sides up front.

I reckon it's worth a go, but Knighta isn't one to think outside the square.

Would love to see him play defence for Bendigo.

Has totally lost it and is totally unfair on both him and the guys not playing that he's getting a gig.

They would just isolate him one out in the square, any half decent forward would have no trouble destroying 170cm Davey overhead.

I do agree with

He fumbles, all round he is just shocking with the ball in his hands.

however.

I think Davey needs to be traded while he still has some currency left, as some opposition supports, commentators etc seem to really rate him.

Yeah, can definately see that Davey would struggle in the air, but that'd be the point, Slattery would still take the 'marking' small forward, someone like Monfries for us, whereas Davey would be able to take the goalsneak, quick small forward, someone who runs and crumbs rather than leads for marks.

If the selectors don't drop him next week, then he has to do the honourable thing and fake an injury and rule himself out.

He's not good enough to fill any position on a football field, at least at AFL standard. I would honestly prefer any poster on these boards, whether it be man, women or child, to play instead of him.

Completely agree.

He has been nothing short of pathetic and his pulling out of contests and not even competing is under 9's stuff.

Davey needs to be played as a half forward.

Currently he is being played deeper as a pocket, and his man can simply zone off him. This results in our taller players not finding space and the ball being kicked inside 50 to an open Davey. Opposition players make up ground on him while the ball is in the air and subsequently many of our inside 50s become marking contests by a player who stands 173cm.

His pace and defensive pressure can be an asset to the team. There is no reason to play him so deep that his height becomes a liability.

I was at the game today and watching Davey was difficult. When you have seen some of his good games it can make it even harder to watch.

It can be very difficult to make a call on a player unless you know exactly what their role is within the team but a few things are of note.

1. Whatever position he plays, you must have cleaner hands! Fumbling in attack costs the team a goal, fumbling in defense can gift the opposition a goal. This has to be an issue.

2. Why can inconsistency be tolerated by some players but other players made to go back to Bendigo to work on things? (cue Houli remarks :D). I am not saying that he should/shouldnt be dropped, but what is it that Knights expects of him each week? Did he do his job today?

I dont want to sound like he is our biggest or only issue because I'm not. To single out a small forward after only 9 goals were kicked against the side that finished 14th last year is not rational. We also cant blame him for all our skill errors today.

I think Davey still has something to offer our club, he is a match winner and sometimes it is easy to pick their game appart if they have just had a shocker.

Davey is my most hated player but seriously leave him up forward his ability to lock the ball in the forwardline through his pressure on opposition defenders is the strongest part of his game. I don't see the Bombers play as much as the rest of you but Slattery always seems to do a reasonable job on the smaller fellas and on is one of the more courageous blokes running around (always back him to un back with the flight into oncoming traffic).

Biggest myth in AFL football.
