David King for coach

I grew up in Melbourne supporting North. Moved to Queensland in my late teens but have always followed them. Now my two sons, who've lived all their lives in Queensland, are also passionate supporters.

Personally I was glad North didn't move to the Gold Coast.

Here's what I don't understand - why is it that regularly on this board anyone who thought North should go to the Gold Coast is automatically discounted?

I think there would be much better coaches than David King. But to dismiss him on the basis that he once thought the best interests of the club were to relocate is ridiculous. Never mind that David King is a premiership champion and clearly loves the club. He thought the Gold Coast would be a good move and therefore forfeits his right to further involvement. That's dumb-headedness personified.

I agree. I felt his opinion was one he genuinely believed as being best for the club rather than others who were after what they saw as best for the league or Vic football or any other tripe like that.

I was shitty with him when he said it and held it against him for a long time, but, time heals all wounds. Anyone who questions his validity as a North man is just being stubborn.

I don't mind David King as a commentator. He's more likely to have a crack at an opinion than your average idiot dribbler and its obvious he actually watches all the games.

Just because someone is a commentator doesn't make them a good coach. We've had some really dumb threads recently and this is one of them. I haven't had the energy to click on the 'See Ya Scotty' thread some douche bag created but that has to be the crowning jewel of stupidity in a bad a two weeks for the club and this board.

Really remove your statement cause ex north legend made mention north should move to gold coast. About time we got over it, we never thankfully moved to gold coast and history says David king is still a north Melbourne great.

Should we sack Scott cause as a player he wanted to belt north everytime he played us, NO.

Personally I don't want king to coach north but I wouldn't at all mind if he had some role at North. Time heals all wounds.

King coached 2 or 3 games at my club a couple of years ago. He took
us for training a couple of times as well which was fantastic. He talked a lot about the press and Collingwoods tactics and had us practising this stuff and trying to use some of the tactics. Very big on guarding dangerous space, not just sticking on a man. So if we were on a forward we were encouraged to leave them if we didn't think they were in a dangerous position and fill in the hole and get numbers to the contest. Also talked about the "hand grenade" which was basically just aggressive, attacking running from stoppages. When the ball was thrown up he'd have us sprinting off in different directions to give the next option. Also working lines which were basically paths to goal and where to set up ahead of the play. He was really great, learnt a whole lot from him, was mostly very positive and attacking stuff, but also a lot on blocking up
space and getting numbers to the contests.

Obviously AFL and EDFL B Grade are entirely different and I have no idea how he'd go coaching AFL. But he was very impressive

I also lost a lot of respect for King when we played the Dogs last year......Thompson niggled Hall through the first half, Eade had a massive sook in the media about Thompson (designed to create sympathy for Hall and get him off a report), and threw in some crap about us playing the man, because two of his players had head cuts (produced from them running into each other!!!!).....and King swallowed Eade's crap, and stuck the boots in about how awful it was that we'd played the man.

Not only disloyal to the club, but totally clueless.

I don't mind honest criticism from past players........but I certainly object when criticism is inaccurate, sanctimonious and hypocritical.

Sometimes he makes some decent observations, but constantly makes comments for the sake of being different or inflammatory.

So as Easy said, makes the perfect commentator.

Not a massive deal, have noticed him now and then, swinging between referring to North as we/them. Since his pro-GC comments, should stay on the media side of the fence.

A FWIW, he was bitter when he got a tap on the shoulder at the end of his playing career, don't think his ego couldn't handle the same situation as a coach.
