What the heck? David King vs Chris Fagan

King made a point a few days back that to be a good coach, you must have people skills - he then said “Like Tim Fagan , he may not be as tactically shrewd as some other coaches, but he gets others to worry about that stuff”

Slobbo then mis-quoted him on air basically inferring that King had said Fagan wasn’t a good coach - to which King got riled and said ‘don’t put words in my mouth’.

King was obviously feeling touchy and Slobbo is a dill.
King and Hutchison have been shit canning Fagan for years

He's forthright and arrogant as **** but for some reason I like him.

I only watch two footy shows these days, On the Couch (Lyon, another arrogant **** that I like) and First Crack.

King spent most of 2011 shit canning Geelong and writing them off, a monumental backfire.

It's opinion, it didn't personally affect me, who really cares in the end?

A lot of offended sooks in here. It's all part of the tapestry of the game.

King dumps on Fagan every chance gets, but given King thinks Champion Data is the best ranking system you have to say his opinion is not better than someone at local pub.

King is an arrogant self absorbed idiot.
Every time I hear one of King's analysis or predictions I just think of someone throwing spaghetti against a wall.. Eventually something will stick!

Thanks for that interesting story…I mean it’s nothing at all like the topic being discussed but it was both a refreshing and welcome distraction from all the talk about King having a personal vendetta with Fagan…it was like a conversational sorbet!

I especially liked the part of your story where you let everyone know that you identify strongly with media types who are obnoxious and lacking in emotional intelligence! I mean I wouldn’t have picked that up given your low tolerance for anything remotely sooky but I appreciate your vulnerability in sharing that with us nonetheless 🙏

Anyway, let’s get back to talking about how King has some sort of personal vendetta with Fagan and how funny it is to see the dumbest man in footy in damage control and being on the receiving end of some of the vitriol he routinely dishes out!

Cheers 🍻

I agree with King. I reckon Fagan is an ordinary - decent coach. Never heard a genuine footy insight from him, it’s all based off a father figure vibe with a great list.

I hadn’t thought of that…in a results-driven industry like coaching, I’d always just assumed you’re judged by your results but maybe he really is just an ordinary-decent coach with an overwhelmingly excellent record?!?

Conversely, this might be why some people consider Lyon to be an excellent coach even though he only has an ordinary-decent record, at best

You’ve given me some real foot for thought 🤔

You don’t think the quality of the playing list plays a huge part of it?
Can’t see Fagan doing what Scott has done with a bits and pieces list.
More handouts for you next season too to bolster it, just have to keep the end of season Vegas trip under control this time.

Obviously if the bears win next week (and that remains to be seen) then it’s full credit but to not win one in this era would be an abject failure. You know that too which is why you’re so touchy.

They're footy commentators, nothing more, nothing less. You give them too much credit in thinking they should be something else.

Anyway, you're team had a good win, enjoy the week and don't waste your time being a misery guts on here.

Thanks for the advice on how to be a fan, I appreciate you coming to a thread on a coach v commentator and educating me on how getting involved in a thread on a coach v a commentator will just make me unhappy in life…I’ll try to do better at being a fan in future 🙏

his job is to have opinions on footy, sometimes right sometimes wrong

True…his job is also to say words in an order he has chosen for a specific reason…sometimes those words form a sentence, sometimes a salad…that is the true genius of D King!

Kings whole narrative was basically, Geelong will win easily unless Fagan works some magical coaching tactics.
So when Brisbane were 3 goals down time at half time and shortly after 4 goals down just into the third qtr, what did Fagan do……well, nothing. Absolutely nothing. He stood firm and backed his players, and won, and the rest is history . That to me, is a master coach, to know when to do nothing.
It reminds me of one of the biggest ever final comeback. Essendon v Adelaide in 1993. Adelaide jumped the Dons and Sheedy tried almost everything…. He through the magnets around all over the place. Then at half time he reset back to the pre game plan and positions. Back to what they planned to do…. And we all know they came back and won.
Knowing when to do nothing and to back in your plan and players, takes more courage’s and is more of a skill, than doing something for the sake of it and to give David king something to ‘anal…. ise’

Great post.

Fages didn’t blink.

Kingy does what so many people do on bigfooty - and forms an opinion and THEN goes to find data to support. He really looks far and wide for that data and sometimes you sit back and go "hmmm, he's really done some research here"

But ultimately - Kingy has a few explanations for a win:
  • the winning team was better at creating turnovers and scoring from them
  • the winning team had more marks inside 50
  • the winning team had more clearances and contested ball.

The rest is really just colouring in
