He doesn't strike me as being as insufferable as someone like Hayden*, who didn't receive as much opprobrium from the public.

That said, he did come off as being manipulative at times. I noticed that he tended to pick and choose his words very carefully at times, like he was telling the public what he wanted them to know and hear. People can get turned off by that because it doesn't come across as very authentic.

*I loved him as a player, but the likes of Brad Hogg make him out to be a bigger a-hole than Clarke by some distance.

Other than Shane Warne, I can’t think of another firmer teammate who ever expressed any affection toward Clarke post-retirement.

Hayden’s firmer teammates like him. Counts for something.

Hayden's biggest allies - Langer, Martyn, Symonds (RIP), S Waugh - spent a lot of time with him in various setups.

By comparison, Clarke didn't because he wasn't in that age group.

Yeah, I still reckon Warne did it, tbh. You never hear words spoken as clearly as that through an effects mic, unless it's the stump mic.

CA dished out penalties way in excess of the match referee partly to save face and partly to satisfy the outrage-mob.

This. Every other nation has gotten caught and were penalized accordingly. but CA holds its self to a higher standard apparently. But like you mention it was just to satisfy the outrage mob.
 
I wonder if the incident happened in 2024 would they still get the same penalty? Are people more or less sensitive, woke, PC, easily outraged than back then? I think they wouldn't be so quick to hand down such harsh penalties. We're all a bit more desensitized too outrage nowadays imo

Combination of this plus the fact they lied (and joked, from memory) at the press conference afterwards, I think. Telling the truth and a simple, genuine apology would have gone a long way.

The cricketing world was waiting for a chance to get stuck into Warner (some of it very warranted, some of it a less so) and he served it up to them on a platter.
 
I think David Warner has had a very good career.

Not great - he ranks just outside of my Top 20 since WSC and IMO is the worst of the 100 Test club - but still very good.

His mediocre overseas record and abrasive personality have been well-documented, so let's focus on the positives.

Firstly, he was a colossus at home and a very good fielder. I pegged him as being our Sehwag early doors and that's somewhat true, because he not only regularly put the opposition on the back foot very quickly when the match began, but he could also ram home an advantage like nobody's business. He was very good at downhill skiing - scoring centuries when AUS were already ahead of the game.

My two favourite innings are his first two: that unbeaten century on a Hobart greentop when his teammates were falling around him, and that rollicking 180 on a WACA greentop where IND lost 20/330 or some such. Honourable mentions to his twin Cape Town centuries against a powerful SA attack, his two centuries in BAN, his two double-hundreds and of course his 335*.

And he was a great ODI and T20 player, and a very good fielder. Even his legbreaks could take wickets early doors!

Happy to called part of the outrage mob, but I don't like cheaters. Particularly in world sports. If Smith, Warner and Bancroft never played international cricket again after that, I wouldn't have batted an eye.

Probably negate half the worlds Test cricketers then, including many champions.........meh.

Just a massive flog that seems to be all about brand Warner, than the greater good of cricket.
His baggy green fiasco this week was just a publicity stunt.

I tend to agree. The thing CA got wrong was not using the time to push for penalties of that type to become the standard for ball-tampering, rather than the almost-nothing that is still in place.
