For all intents and purposes we don't actually have a nickname.

We are the only club where our nickname can't be expressed as a noun - eg 'former SUN'.

We are one of a handful of clubs where our nickname doesn't appear in the logo.

We have a mascot which essentially doesn't make sense - ie a weird thunder bolt character that is supposed to represent power somehow.

The nickname has no historical relevance, no link to our location, no link to our name, etc. It's just random and made up.

You could delete it tomorrow and just be called Port Adelaide and everything would continue as per usual except the song.

This is just plain wrong.

lol, you cannot be serious with this.

Yeah I get it but it's still abstract compared to say the Eagles being represented by an eagle mascot and having an eagle flying around the stadium.

That's the problem when you choose a dumb nickname.

If only we had a flying pirate at our games.

I reckon the nickname would have to be the least of our concerns. I actually like the Power as a nickname. Why does it have to be an animal or character of sorts? Where some lame mascot can make more sense?

do the suns or blues have a mascot that makes more sense?

We really missed the boat with the Pirates thing.
Not really, we've done it with kids stuff.

Also if we simply drop 'Power' and be Port Adelaide, we can have any maritime or nautical theme we like, similar to how Power can be electricity, weather or just strength.

The name SUNS and the yellow and red as the basis for the identity is pretty great for the Gold Coast, they just haven't done anything good with it yet.

The Blues have more than a century of history with their name.

Power is just a very-product-of-the-90s NBA style name, as were the guernseys we started with. We realised the guernsey needed to change and changed it, we just need to go one more step.

Agree with this, I imagine it's because all the surveys and focus groups are telling them that Power stuff is boring and nobody likes it, where as Port stuff is great and everyone loves it.

I'd be very happy to drop Power by stealth, start directing the AFL to call us Port and dropping all reference to Power. As you say, we're most of the way there anyway.

Power was for the power station I thought?

If we'd committed to this it would have worked well. Someone at the club went "hey Pirates is so natural let's do some branding around it".

It just makes sense. It's always made sense. I'd still change tomorrow and while there's be some initial uproar, in 12 months nobody but a few unhinged facebookers would be asking for Power to make a comeback.

Yep but also agree it's not Port's biggest issue at the moment.

I really want the PB for Anzac Day. Don't understand why that game isn't the clubs first priority.
A game against someone other than the Crows breaks it out from being a little South Aussie throwback, into 'Well if they can wear it versus St. Kilda / Melbourne / whoever, why not anytime?'. Hence why a step one of trading Showdown for Anzac Day should be a club priority. The current regime though hate everything about the PB's except the money they bring in. So any risk of expanding that to more fans being interested in it, and Port's prior success by extension, would have their spines shivering.

Port Adelaide Pirates already exist and had that identity before we entered the AFL. I wouldn't be a fan of trying to bully them out of their nickname

the current regime hate everything about the PB's? Sounds highly unlikely.

A couple of foul-mouthed pirate wenches would get you on deck.

You could remove the word 'pirate' from this sentence and it's just as true.

So you are saying we could drop the nickname entirely and it would barely make any difference? I think that is a good thing as we don't want the nickname overpowering the actual name Port Adelaide. We learnt that lesson with the Port Power branding at the start.

I think it is fine as it is. The Power nickname doesn't need to be a focal point, nicknames in general are a bit cheesey.

What do you want to go to the game wearing an eye patch carrying a sword or something?

Except the money. This is the regime at any complaint, reflexively responds 'Remember 2012!'. The club and any success didn't exist prior to Ken, except for the occasional chance to milk merchandise revenue out of fans, according to them.

Sounds cool as **** for kids. Jolly roger flags in the cheer squad, tricorn hats in the crowd, a proper sea shanty club song. It's just better than what we have now in every way.

The name Pirates naturally lends itself to cool imagery. It's effortless to brand around. Power has been a nightmare to brand around, we've really struggled to get traction with it.

Yep but also agree it's not Port's biggest issue at the moment.

The people in charge of executing a rebrand probably aren't going to be sourced from the footy dept.

Port Adelaide Pirates already exist and had that identity before we entered the AFL. I wouldn't be a fan of trying to bully them out of their nickname

According to the history page on their website they adopted the name "Pirates" in 2002.

And where do you think they got their colours from?

Even if they did get in first, we're a major professional Australian Rules club and they're a local amateur soccer club who had already encroached on the Port Adelaide FC brand.
