India remain winless in first tests in Australia and, while Tendulkar likes Sydney having scored big unbeaten tons in 3 of his 4 Tests here, India's only win in Sydney was in the World Series era 34 years ago, and their only 2nd test victory was in Adelaide in 2003 when Dravid and Ponting both made first innings double tons, Irfan Pathan made his debut, Shane Warne was suspended and Brad Williams was opening the bowling for Australia.

More questions over the Australian batsmen now than there were going into Melbourne with the 3 under most pressure all getting 50s and the other 3 managing just 77 between them. Haddin struggled again but dropping him doesn't seem to be on the selectors' minds and the lack of first class cricket means that's unlikely to change at least for this series. Ryan Harris comes into the squad but it's hard to see how he gets in, but while they've got four good quicks to choose from this is the best opportunity the selectors will get to give Pattinson a rest.

Gambhir, Laxman, Kohli and Ishant Sharma were the weakest links for India in Melbourne. Gambhir has now gone 23 months without a Test century, while Laxman scored one against the Windies but you never really know how to rate anything against them, and he had a very ordinary tour of England. Kohli's now played 4 tests away from home for an average of just 12, but the 50 in each innings he made in his only test in India a month ago may give Ian Chappell one more test to Gunnar about Rohit Sharma. Rahane is the opener who would replace Gambhir - both batsmen average 60+ in 50ish first class games, but Indian first class cricket is played on Indian pitches.

Ishant's form is also pretty ordinary - he liked the Caribbean with 22 wickets at 16, but of the other 4 series he's played in the last 12 months his best series bowling average is the 45.5 from Melbourne. Abhimanyu Mithun was picked as a replacement before Vinay Kumar (who was called up to replace the first replacement a few days later), leaving him the most likely to take Ishant's spot, unless they want to gamble on a second spinner with Dhoni now their best seam bowler in the top 7, and Zaheer always 40/60 at best to make it through back-to-back tests.

I was surprised by the Hilf, but imagine Harris, Pattinson and an in form Siddle in the same attack? I'd like that.

I hope we get to see Warner smash a big score and Clarke deliver after the disappointing first test.

funny thing on day 4 when I was there was that Siddle really seemed the most threatening of all the bowlers. Pattinson tended to stray too straight and was turned around the corner, but Siddle - none of the batsmen seemed comfortable and just about all the runs off him came through streaky shots through/over slips. Siddle really had great control, aggression and pace. Very impressive live at the ground (first time for me to see him in the whites).

Probably the best I've seen him bowl. He's usually been very consistent but he actually looked really dangerous in the last test and capable of taking big wickets. He also looked pretty solid with the bat and didn't throw his wicket away mindlessly. Thought he deserved to share Man of the match with Pattinson.

selectors will go conservative and pick Lyon, and if Hilfy backs up poorly he will be replaced by Harris for Adelaide, and Cummins/Watson in for Perth.

we've clearly got a few too many good quicks in the line up. Hilfenhous still seems the most backwards to me - surely he doesnt get a long run before Harris and Cummins get their shot.

watson is an enigma. not good enough batting form in recent test matches and he is yet to play a T20 match which should be minimum preparation. but who do you drop? Hussey and Ponting were our best in Melbourne. Cowan did well, Warner is 'the future' and scored an (Overrated) century in Hobart. Clarke's the captain and scores big every second test it seems.

Perth test is before the Adelaide test

Warner plays 3 tests, scores a century in one of them and looks reasonably comfortable at the top of the order.

/not test quality, discard immediately.

Warner may just be a flash in the pan like Hughes. One or two good tests in between several of rubbish, you don't know yet.

Pretty much the same can be said of siddles career so far, but he seemed far better these past 3 tests and has shown consistency.

Same with Pattinson and Cummins, are they brett lee bezerkers followed by decades of excuses or the real deal?

Also how many catches and byes will Haddin leak this test?

They consistently are naming their side a day before the match, good to see.
Figured they would keep Lyon who definitely deserves a go at the SCG and give Harris another week off.

how much credit does clarke get as captain for the improved bowling?

A lot of criticism was directed at his field placings during the test, but in the end the bowling carried the batting and the day.

Harris will still have a part to play this series in my opinion. Good line up though, hard to change a winning bowling line up so soon

Laxman has 3 centuries in 3 tests at the SCG, sachin has 3 from 4. If India ever needed their big guns to stand up, now would be the time

Craig McDermott as our new bowling coach has been mentioned as a reason for improvement. Clarke certainly varies his field placings and makes more bowling changes than Punter who often just let things roll along (with Warnie/McGrath etc he usually had plenty of reasons to do just that tho').

No less then he normally does.

Considering past records and team strengths i guess it's fair to say the mcg test was a must win for us if we wanted to actually win the series.

This test certainly seems like india's must win, even a draw at the scg would feel like a loss to india.

A draw at the SCG would leave use 1-0 up with a game at Perth to come.
