Maybe Essendon should have given the senior role to Simon Goodwin (who coached the side for one game in the last round of 2013) from 2014 and things might have gone differently for the Bombers.

This is because Simon Goodwin is the latest link in an amazing chain of coaching success that goes all the way back to the 1910s and the legendary Jock McHale as follows:

Jock McHale was the coach of Dan Minogue at Collingwood. While Minogue would not win a flag with Collingwood as a player, he would coach Richmond to premierships in 1920 and 1921, these Tiger teams containing a young man named Frank 'Checker' Hughes. Checker Hughes would coach four Demon premiership teams (1939, 1940, 1941 and 1948) and these teams contained a player by the name of Norm Smith. Norm Smith, who played alongside Ron Barassi Snr (who died in action in WW2) would coach his late team-mate's son Ron Barassi Jnr in the superstar Demon side of the 1950s and early 1960s, winning many flags along the way. Ron Barassi Jnr would achieve premiership success at both Carlton and North Melbourne, and in the midst of the Kangaroos success in the mid 1970s was a superstar South Australian named Malcolm Blight. A premiership player, Blight became a premiership coach in back to back flags with the Adelaide Crows in 1997 and 1998. And one of the Crows he coached to the premiership was Simon Goodwin.

So in coming years, at least one of the Demons' players of their premiership team of 2021 should coach his own AFL side to a Grand Final victory.

Petracca wouldn't be able to different personalities and call them unprofessional and want out
May and Lever have no communication skills
Brayshaw AFAIK hasn't expressed any desire for coaching
Viney is too ****ed
None of the lesser likes really strike me as coaching types. Maybe James Jordon with the expanded knowledge up in Sydney and seems pretty level headed
 
Did you know that when Essendon last won a final in 2004, there was a lady still alive who was born in the 1880s? Her name was Maria Capovilla of Ecuador, and she was born in 1889, the same year as Adolf Hiter, Charlie Chaplin and Clifton Webb. Also in 1889 the Eiffel Tower and the Moulin Rouge opened in Paris, the Savoy Hotel opened in London, the Wall Street Journal was published for the first time, the company that would become Coca Cola was incorporated and the first pizza was made.

Capovilla inherited the world's oldest person title earlier in 2004 and would hold it for over two years until her death in August 2006 at the age of 116.

To go off topic a second, why is it that so few ruckmen have become senior coaches? Before someone jumps in angrily with a dozen names of players who mainly played in the ruck who did become senior coaches yes there would be some over the years. But I'm struggling to name too many in recent years, although Dean Cox (currently a senior assistant at Sydney) looks like he might get a senior coaching job in the near future.

I can't think why, as many players who played all over the ground proved they could (or could not) coach over the years. And sometimes coaches are very different from the players they once were. Ross Lyon is perhaps the best example. An extremely talented and highly skilled player he was a wonderful player to watch in his AFL days, appropriately with Fitzroy, kicking great goals, taking magnificent marks and adding to the excitement of the game he was playing in. But watch a game coached by Ross Lyon, and well they are hardly interesting or exciting.

Because they are big and dumb. It doesn't take any gameplay knowledge past U12s to tap to teammates, get down the line for get out kick, or go kick behind play.

Their key stat hit outs and even hit outs to advantage have statistically minimal correlation, and in my opinion minimal causation, to results of football games.
