So you are content for Oliver not to improve from here? I maintain if today is how he plays out 2021 I’d have no issue trading him. Killed momentum so many times handballing back into traffic when he was clear.
This is how good Oliver is! He is capable of finding the footy 35 times against Fyfe, Mundy, Brayshaw and Cerra(a bloody decent midfield), and he still has another level in him! He's only 23. Dusty didn't fully breakout until after that age! He's still got growth in him. Showed glimpses of the run and carry he can provide last season. Freo did a great job of restricting his movement today. But his role seemed to be win ball and dish it out to Trac, Jordy or Harmes etc. For a player who can win the ball as well as he does, I am very happy for him to be the ball winner and for Trac etc to wait on the outside. We don't need 4 blokes going for the same ball everytime when in dispute. Yes, absolutely he can take his game to another level! We all believe that! But at the game today, everyone around me was saying what an amazing game he had. The impact he had at stoppages and the ability to get from contest to contest from the first bounce to the final siren was phenomenal. His workrate was top notch! His ability to win the ball is like nothing we've seen at the club for a very long time. Yes, It can be frustrating at times when he puts teammates under pressure, but what about the options he creates? He releases players into space regularly which stes up space and opportunity. The kids a jet!

And look at Tom Mitchell's game tonight! 39 touches BOG from all accounts. Very similar stats to Oliver. 350 metres gained, more turnovers than Oliver, same amount of score involvements. I bet the Hawks supporters aren't bitching and whining about trading him! Ridiculous...

We would have lost today without Clarry, but hopefully we can trade him for two first rounders
Is this a serious comment? Wtf. We finally hit on a pick and you want us to try and go again. This has to be one of the worst takes over ever seen on here.

EDIT: Seriously woke up two days later still dumbfounded by this one haha. Had equal most contested possessions across the league in round 1 and the plan is to trade him for two first round picks!?!?

Mitchell wasn’t close to BOG I watched the entire game and it’s a pointless argument Olivers ceiling is way higher. We got absolutely smashed at clearances today so I’m not sure why you’re so high on him there either, expect a lot more than that from him Gawn and Petracca.

Mitchell is 100% of the reason Hawthorn won, he was involved in every single play in the third quarter. Made it impossible for Essendon to counter attack

I don’t rate Titch at all but was at the game tonight and saw first hand him singlehandedly drag the hawks back, unreal performance.
Absolutely Mitchell will get the 3 votes. Most likely Clarry will get the 2 votes from today's game as well. Two great performances and quite possibly neither of there teams win without them. Great to see that in and under players are hugely important in the game.

Exactly. How exciting does Brockman look! Oh my! Swans young team will be awesome in a couple of years too. I fully expect Suns and Swans to be dominating in a few years time. Both lists look exceptional to me.

Swans yes Suns not sure. Sydney have a proven culture and track record of development. Suns have insane talent but still question marks. Very disappointing for Brisbane to get done like that honestly. Almost some port vs Melbourne 2019 vibes.

Daniher looked to throw out their whole forward structure tbh. Could end up being a poor move by the Lions. Round 1 always throws up some crazy results though, so we'll see. But yeah, bit worrying if you are a Lions supporter. That was a gimme game for them tbh...

Rowbottom is unreal, I like sparrow but spewing rowbottom went one pick before him

Wouldn’t write off the season or anything but if you concede that many points to that Sydney side in wet conditions something is seriously wrong with your gameplan. Will say today aside from our awful clearance work we did fairly well to limit Freos entries to shallow and wide areas. So bizarre our no name forwardline functioned quite well but our mids were terrible at the contest (As was Gawn).

I wish I could analyze the game a bit deeper. It looked like we had less numbers at stoppages than the dockers which I have been calling for for a while. It ment Freo exited stoppages a couple times easily but we were able to mark in defence and rebound. Tiger style set up.

With a fit and firing Viney Trac and Oliver we don't need the extra numbers.

It means others can cheat wide and/or forward which gives us great attacking threat.

Not too worried about the skills. Afls fault for getting rid of the pre season..only played 1 serious game so kinda hard to get skills under pressure.

Forward line worked ok actually, we definitely lowered the eyes a ****load more. We turned it over a shitload going in but we can't be mad thats what we wanted.

The worry is we bagged the first 5 goals, then lost 8 goals to 6 after that point. Little worrying

Both sides wasted some chances but the last quarter we dominated while kicking some absolute shanks. 25 scoring shots to 18 which was 17 to 14 after quartertime.

True, but May and Lever already played one of the best defensive games that will be played all year. Even if they play a good not great game we might concede alot more.
The midfield pressure was garbage.

Also about Oliver, Tom Mitchell is a far superior player to Oliver at the moment. His disposals clear the inner ring and he helps ball movement. He never handballs to a bloke standing still or to a ruck in a worse position than him.

Oliver's had the 3rd most disposals after 100 games in history, Matt crouch is second. That about sums up how valuable pure disposal numbers are. No other sport on earth uses it as a metric to judge impact. It's completely context less.

Good calls, skills also impacted by the classic swirly MCG breeze - both teams struggled with their kicking. Limited pre-season also an issue.

We should go easy on Clarry, he'd be very rusty given he barely had a praccy match - he did a lot of great work, agree that his short handballs are annoying as ****... but the majority of his game is great.

Good:
- May/Lever were outstanding, marking everything
- Charlie Spargo, really clean and creative up forward
- Winning with Gawn, Clarry, Trac all a bit flat
- TMac - great performance, moved really well and marked well
- Tomlinson - solid as a rock
- Ball movement improved markedly, we'd set up to hit short-medium kicks coming out of the backline and executed pretty well - we had some really promising passages of play butchered through a fumble or mistake fwd of centre
- Jordan, Jackson, Rivers, Kozzie

Bad:
- Harmes is a concern, looks to have lost his strength/power
- Stoppages, not much cohesion and looked reactive, will be nice to get Viney back
- Turnovers, reckon we turned 3-4 certain goals into Freo goals through a basic skill error

Fugly:
- Not much

Tom Mitchell is a brownlow winner! So to say he's a better player than Oliver isn't really a huge call.

What i noticed live yesterday was that Oliver will win the ball at the contest a lot of the time, but the Dees players at the stoppages are flat footed or not creating space. Oliver has to try and create it for them. Mitchell has Clarkson as coach. There midfield setup last night was brilliant in the 2nd half. Goodwin has no idea what he's doing in regards to our stoppages/clearance work. A midfield coach who knows what he's doing will see Oliver go to that next level..

Yeah I don't necessarily disagree here. Mitchell is kinda there designated inside guy, we don't really have one which is why I think we struggle at stoppages. Feels like no one knows their role. Be easier if we just said Oliver go and get it and the rest either be prepared for a turnover or be running forward. He's good enough to trust not to lose an inside ball

100%
gonna be some frustrating turn overs but it's the cost of lowering your eyes. Alternative is bombing it long and then you don't get the horrible turnovers but I loved that we tried.
Ben Brown and Weid will actually go ok if that's how we are planning on using the footy.

Thought Oliver's 2nd half was much better than his first. He was able to break away more and use his feet. In the first half he had 17 disposals with 2 kicks in the second half he had 18 disposals with 8 kicks. So clearly an area he was told to clean up at half time.
