Defectors you just can’t hate

How did you feel when Paul Salmon pulled on a Hawk jumper?

First name I thought of when I saw this thread. An absolute class player and a champion of Essendon. I thought the treatment of him by our fans towards the end of his first stint at Windy Hill was disgraceful and I never wished anything but the best for him when he decided to look elsewhere for opportunities - and that coming from a kid who started supporting the Bombers in the late 70s and who learned to hate Hawthorn more than any other team. I worked with Dermie at SEN and told him one day that I'd hated him more than any other player when I was growing up (supreme disappointment to me that he turned out to be a really nice guy - and he is, I got along with him very well). But I never begrudged Fish the chance to make the most of his career elsewhere.

Salmon basically asked to be traded due to wanting to be a full time ruckman. I think there was never any animosity there. I think most people at the dons were pretty happy to see fish get his opportunity elsewhere even if it was the hawks!

I never hated any of the 2000 team who got split up due to salary cap issues. Caracella, Heffernan, Hardwick, Blumfield & Jacobs.

Solomon & Johnson later as well. Always happy to see ex-bombers play on in the Essendon 2nds @ Fremantle!

I'm not sure at the time that most Bomber fans wished him well - the booing of him at the end of his first stint always echoes in my mind, and is a blight on our club - but the acceptance of his return, and the guard of honor we gave for his 300th goes some way to repairing the damage done.

As for Caracella, Heffernan, Hardwick and Blumfield - that was a hard time. I don't think any of us really wanted to see those guys go. I have varying opinions on their merits as football players, but I and many others know we didn't have the money (salaray cap-wise only) to keep them all. I wished each of them the best in their endeavours at the clubs they went to.

I also wished at the time that we could have kept Raines and Richardson, and I was sorry to see Merv Neagle see out his career in a Swans jumper, and also to see Glenn Hawker go to Carlton. Players I always wished the best for, even if they played for the opposition. Oh...and Roger Merrett - not one of the flashiest or most obviously skilled, but he did so much for us when he wore the black and red. Always wished the best for him.

Oh well, he saw their error of his ways in the end.

Could never hate Wanga - a Brownlow medallist for the club.

I still like Ted Richards - I could understand him leaving, Sheedy never gave him a decent go.

Bout the only guy that left us that I (used to) harbour a grudge against was...um wassisname at Freo, Des something. Mal Micheal is a major twat though.

Other than that, our other high profile defectors, Buckley and Akermanis, I felt no hatred for, and I cant really think of another Lions player that left under a cloud.

Who the hell would want to leave Gods own country to go somewhere else?

That's what Des was trying to say when he wore the Freo jumper to the draft camp

Blake Caracella for me. He was in our best 22, part of the 2000 team and bled red and black. Don't think he wanted to leave.. but had to for salary cap reasons. Really hoped he did well in his new home as most bomber supporters did. He was well liked amongst fans. Fortunately was able to be part of a Brisbane flag but unfortunately his career ended in a serious injury whilst with the pies. I often think about what could have been if he stayed... and we got rid of one of the johnsons back then. we'll never know.

Although initially i was angry he left, i can never hate Judd.
Ill always remember the huge part he played in helping us win the premiership.

Eagles supporters cant really go on about Judd being unloyal, becuase we got Chick and Stenglein who also played big roles in helping us achieve the premiership.

Corey Mckernan, Peter Bell and Wayne Carey.

Not a fan of Daniel Motlop.

I couldn't hate Corey, Belly or even Choppy.

But Duck? Come on. God, seeing him run around in the liquorice allsorts was almost a suitable punishment for what he did to us.

The creature they call Motlop is not worthy of my time.

Joel Smith, Brent Guerra - great blokes and players should never have been let go. Too good kicking skills to have at the saints

Mathew lappin??? hahaha he was easy to hate complete little wa7654nker!!!

lockett?? just to sad to hate anything from that.

Hall?? A dislike not quite hate though

O'Brien?? Big Time hate.

Dean Rice?? Always liked him. good bloke great player again bloody hocking!!!

def have a massive soft spot for brent prismall....wish him more luck at the bombers than what he got with us...

also still loved barnes even when he played for essendon

i was devestated when woewodin left and i wish he still played for someone, one of my all time faves, also liked darren jolly and was pleased he got a flag.
i cant hate travis johnstone cause he got us Jack Grimes, who will be a star.

also couldnt ever hate the wiz.

on the flip side i hate SCOTT THOMPSON and STEPHEN POWELL and i now hate CHRIS JOHNSON

Well this is obvious but it has to be said now that he will be playing against us in different colours this season - Ben Cousins.

He could single-handedly dismantle the Eagles during a regular season game and i wouldnt hold anything against him. Bled blue and gold. Too many good memories of when he busted his gut to get us over the line. Ken Judge years in particular, separated the men from the boys Cuz was about the only man who stood up.

Judd on the other hand.... I know he helped us to a premiership, but deserting the club and then parading himself around Victoria with $$ in his eyes made me see red.

Jason Ball i had plenty of time for. If Peter Matera had left for Melbourne for 4 years i would have cried for days and not held anything against him, but thankfully he stayed. West Coast have a pretty decent record of holding on to players actually. Struggling to think of other big names who havent finished their careers at West Coast.
