Well, we needed a thread for this.

Massive coup. Probably not too well known for AFL and NRL fans, but I believe the A-League should be targeted at football fans – god knows there's enough in Australia. You'd imagine this is going to bolster FC's crowd. The Italian community will adore this, and considering how populous they are in all capital cities... jeez.

Really looking forward to this. Victory v Sydney on Australia day is going to be insane.

Paul Scholes is 37, Ryan Giggs 38. So what?

They start alot of games plus they play in the best league in the world. Don't think Del Piero played many minutes last season either from what i can remember. I think he can perform well still. However i can't see more then 12 goals with the service he will get.

Backs up my point even more. This is the A-League not European football, he'll be fine.

I remember as a kid (I'm 23 now) every second Italian kid my age (the other 50% being female) would wear a Del Piero shirt to the free dress days at school. And when 75% of your school is Italian that's a testament to the man's popularity amongst the Italian community.

Great get by Sydney FC, the A-League and Australian football in general.

He'll score 10+ if he plays a full season especially because he will take penalties and free kicks.
Let him play for 65-70 mins and then Sydney will bring in the speedsters like Mallia.
I think Del Piero and Yau (new Panama international) could form a very lethal partnership.

Great signing for the profile of the A-league among diehard fans but I really doubt he'll make that much of an impact, at 37 he's lost a lot of pace and will mostly rely on instinct to score. My main issue is the service he's gonna get, McFlynn is not Marchisio and he may be forced to win his own ball to create chances.

The A-League: Football's retirement home.

All jokes aside this is a great signing for Sydney and the A-League, will defiantly bolster crowds.

Endorsed by this man, who somehow managed to convince both Perth and the Fury to sign him despite being distinctly average ever since he turned 30.

Great get for the league though

Pretty much finishes any argument. Del Piero is Class and will have no problems with the A-league. His foot will literally be weapon.
Del Piero's problem will be his midfield. Like any striker. Got no questions with a good midfield like Victory's or Roar's he could get 20+.

Shame he is coming to Aus. this land of epl brainwashed bogans doesnt deserve him.
Hope he doesnt get hassled by the great unwashed.
To play in the plastic Ayyy league with no kulcha... terrible.

Were any of you around when Benito Carbone came out for a guest stint. He was 35 at the time. I saw him play Adelaide and he was breathtakingly good, just several classes above everyone on the pitch. I'm sure Del Piero will be fine, hell Ill head down the caketin to see him play

It was a shame he wasn't here longer.

2 assists and a goal on debut which was just pure class as you can see in the clips above.
Scored a wonderful freekick against Central Coast at Bluetongue in his 3rd game before pulling his hamstring off the bone which ended his time at Sydney :( such a shame as he was such a good player and had so much hype around him.
