When did 'the modern era' even start? The 60s? Because Hawthorne?
1990 would be the AFL era. But I don't think the true modern era really counts until salary caps are in place and recruitment departments are properly funded, so around 2000? But then right after that the AFL decided to corrupt it with two new clubs mucking up the list rebuilds of the bottom half of the ladder, starting with Gold Coast in 2011 and GWS in 2012, and thus the accident of history was born.

By this reckoning the most successful club of the modern era is... the Brisbane Lions?

If it's 2000 then it's still them unfortunately

I think you must've stopped reading after the second sentence.
I didn't. I don't like it but accident or not, they have 4 since 2000. We can make all the excuses we want, but facts are facts.

The hawks poster on the main board claiming Joel Selwood only got drafted first round because he was related to Troy and Adam is amazing.
Weren't we taking him if the PP system hadn't changed mid season?

Yep.

He was also a gun underage footballer and probably would've gone #1 in the Murphy draft had he been old enough. He only slipped because of the knee.

I'm biased here but i'd have all but Cripps ahead of the essendon guys and that's on his current form, not what he's done in the past.

big thing the dons did in 2021 was get a good performance across the team, especially amongst the youngest players in the group. hope voss can do something similar.
Cripps' form last year was better than Merrett, Parish, Stringer and Ridley apparently

How is this even an argument. It says “I’d have all BUT Cripps ahead of the Essendon guys”. Implying he’d take Walsh, Weitering and McKay ahead of all the Essendon players.

Huh? "...all but Cripps ahead of the Essendon guys...".
I read that as their whole midfield bar Cripps being better.
Okay, yeah, my bad...

All good coz still delusional either way.
Probably not. All three are definitely better than Ridley and Stringer at this point and you could make an argument about them against Parish/Merrett.

Not sure I see it that way. Stringer’s back half of the season was massive. If he gets that going for a full year he’d be pushing top 5 in the comp.

Also think backman are overrated in terms of their impact on winning. Based on 2021 I’d go 1. McKay equal 2nd. Merrett and Walsh 4. Parish 5. Stringer 6. Weitering 7. Ridley

Obviously everyone sees the game differently though.

Top level KPD's can be a bit underrated IMO, the one I like to think of is peak McGovern (the WCE one, not the shit one) where teams had to completely change the way they moved the ball forward because of him, basically having to kick the ball anywhere McGovern wasn't in order to generate scoring opportunities. Weitering isn't quite there, but no reason he can't be.

Stringer's best was as good as anyone's though, if he did that for a full season he'd just about win a Brownlow and would be up there with Dusty and Petracca as the best impact players in the league.

First half of the season was (average per game); 12 disposals - 2 marks - 2 goals - 3 i50s
Second half of the season; 19 disposals - 3.5 marks - 2 goals - 6 i50s

Yeah peak McGovern is an exception I agree but Weitering isn’t having near that impact regularly from what I’ve seen.

Stringer’s dominance at centre bounces also needs to mentioned. He ripped games away from the Bulldogs and Hawthorn
