Vance Joseph back in Denver as DC

Former Broncos head coach Vance Joseph returning to Denver as Sean Payton's defensive coordinator

Just over four years after his dismissal as Broncos head coach, Vance Joseph is back in Denver, this time as the team's defensive coordinator. Most recently holding the same title with the Cardinals, Joseph had reportedly also drawn interest from the Eagles. Now, he's joining Sean Payton's staff to replace Ejiro Evero, as CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones confirmed.

Joseph, 50, spent two seasons as the Broncos' head coach from 2017-2018, going 11-21 during that time. But he was widely considered one of the top defensive coordinator candidates of this year's hiring cycle. A longtime defensive backs coach with the 49ers (2005-2010), Texans (2011-2013) and Bengals (2014-2015), he emerged as a DC with the Dolphins in 2016. Since then, he's overseen three different top-13 scoring defenses. His first year as Denver's head coach, he also led the No. 3-ranked overall "D."

Evero, who served as Denver's DC in 2022, left this offseason for the same job with the Panthers. Joseph, meanwhile, becomes the second former Broncos coach since Wade Phillips to return to the organization as the DC. Payton reportedly also targeted former Jets head coach Rex Ryan as a potential DC for the 2023 campaign.

The more I think about it the more disappointed I get really.

Sacked from the Cards because his D was more or less mid 20s in basically every category. Our D wasn't really anything special under his HC tenure, in fact it got better when he left.

I bet everyone offense & QB in the AFC West has just shrugged their shoulders at this news.

Added
RB Samaje Perine from Bengals
QB Jarrett Stidham from Raiders
TE Chris Manhertz from Jaguars
G Ben Powers from Ravens

DE Zach Allen from Cardinals

And Re-signed LB Alex Singleton

Lost
DL Dre'Mont Jones to Seahawks

Cut

Unsigned

I like/don't like McGlinchey. Should help our run game no doubt but I hope he sorts his pass blocking a bit.

Otherwise looks like some fairly solid additions. Nothing flashy but rounded out enough.

Zach Allen is a beast, he's an excellent pick up.

While at home? Oof, iirc if they get injured away from the facility don't they not get paid?

Surely you do everything like that at the club. The only thing I'd consider doing maybe is going for a run, but aside from that I wouldn't do anything away from the facility.

Its the Jawuan James incident all over again.

He would do it. He didn’t sign Russ. Get the GM fired and hold all the cards

------

Payton is aware of the Wilson apologists... he'll give Wilson an honest chance, but is slowly disarming the leverage Wilson has in anything, so that if things don't go well, they can move on from him.

------

Why is everyone surprised at the Stidham signing? Drew Brees is said to be very smart, meaning quick reads & quick execution. Wilson had real problems last year with shitty reads. If Wilson 3.0 flops, a smart QB is needed for Payton offenses.

A big reason I liked the Payton signing because of the credibility he'd bring and that would enable him to do things perhaps younger/less experienced coaches wouldn't.

I/e walk in the building and tell Russ he can't have all his benefits anymore. Also would bench Russ without a second thought, he doesn't care who he is.

I think part of Rodgers drinking buddys problem was that he didn't have the guts do to it being such an inexperience coach.

Interesting set of coaches for Stiddy.

Billy B
Billy B light (offensive version)
Sean Payton

Neither of the first 2 are known to be particularly good on young QBs. I think if there is something there Payton will find it. He managed to get Winston to play well and not turn the ball over which is a minor miracle in of itself

John Elway no longer with Broncos after consultant contract expires

John Elway, the face of the Denver Broncos following 16 seasons as a player and more than a decade in the front office, has seen his time under contract with the franchise come to an end.
Elway's consulting deal with the Broncos finished at the conclusion of the league year last month and the club will not be renewing it, NFL Network's James Palmer reported Tuesday.
Palmer added Elway moving on from the Broncos had been planned -- from both sides -- for a while.
"I've enjoyed the relationship with the Broncos for a long, long time,'' Elway, 62, said in an interview Tuesday with 9NEWS. "I told Greg I'd be happy to be a resource for him and help in any way that I can. I just wanted the flexibility. They're in great hands. I still plan on being around to watch and be a resource for [CEO] Greg [Penner] or [general manager] George [Paton] if I can.''
Elway led the Broncos to five Super Bowls with two victories in a playing career that stretched from 1983-1998, ultimately leading him to enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
After a decorated career in Denver, the rocket-armed quarterback returned to the team's front office, serving as director of player personnel/general manager/executive vice president of football operations from 2011-2020. The onset of Elway's time as GM was fruitful to the tone five playoff appearances, two Super Bowl berths and one Super Bowl win.

I like the Riley Moss and Drew Sanders picks. Could see Moss playing as a hybrid nickle CB/Safety/Nickel/Dime LB. Fast and likes to tackle so could play all over the D.

Sanders could see him being a 2nd & 3rd down LB. Again, versatile and fast for his size.

Less confident in the Mims pick personally. Again, though, he's versatile. Return kicks, punts, can play WR in slot & outside and wouldn't be surprised to see him used in sweep type plays on the run as well. Don't hate the pick but just didn't immediately love it.

Big theme here with all picks is speed and being very versatile. Very good to have when you're playing against the likes of the Chiefs who are fast and can pass out of almost any personnel so good to have defenders to play in multiple scenarios.

oh FFS...

Thats about 6 ACL / Season ending TC injuries in 2 years.

I cant do this anymore.

We have literally no luck any more with injuries.

UGH ****ing over it.
