Well, not the last game of that year, that is for sure. I went to The Highway with a heart filled with hope and I left the place with a face full of tears! 😭🙃

But, I look at it like a bad break-up; the end sucked, but I can now look back at it objectively and acknowledge the positive aspects of the journey.

Call it rosy retrospection, but the hope for the future whilst living through it was intoxicating. Eddie Betts, amazing. Can you really say you derived no joy throughout that year?

There’s joy in every year, but that’s the nature of an emotional investment.

Peatling was the first sign of Adelaide being an attractive club to play for, a NSW boy with no ties to SA chose us over a few other clubs.

SA players returning home happens often I'm waiting for a big fish who isn't related to SA to see the marketing potential here.... Imagine if Bontempelli was like hey I love the surfing and fishing in SA maybe I need to get out of the kennel and Victoria. I could win another Premiership at Adelaide their list looks good.

The AFL world would melt down.

It would be amazing, but you probably don't get the best player in a team to leave any team, if they are in their home state.

It would be super rare, because anything you could offer them would be matched, and then some. Makes never winning a premiership worth it. Fabric of the club and all that.

I think many of us were not doubting that, it was Nicks we were doubting. So far so good this year though

Some of that Nicks stuff has been on finicky points - like the selection of the 22/23 player - which is just not important. Stepping back and looking at results, this has been a pretty typical rebuild IF we continue to go well this season and jump up the ladder

We can thank Tex.

Some good points here by Riley. Missed the opportunity to mention a new home ground coming too.

I actually said this back in 2021 after Dawson came. Adelaide is in the unique position of having cap space, draft picks and a young exciting team that looks set to push its way into being one of the best sides in the competition.

The 2017 Prelim I felt true happiness as a Crows fan. Then the opposite the next weekend. Part of me still can't believe we lost.

Yup, I remember start of the last qtr of the prelim I just walked round the entire ground just soaking it all up in a state of pure happiness. The following Saturday was the worst day of my life haha. Footy.

If the game was played in Adelaide, we'd win. Richmond were such a force at the MCG, and Vics think we have no reason to feel aggrieved! 🙄

I did wonder "what if" we played at a neutral venue, it would be interesting to see. If Covid had any positives, it was forcing the GF to be played at a neutral venue.

TBH, I think if we'd play Richmond at, say, the Gabba in 2017, we might have still lost. But at least it would have been fairer.

It's history now, and 2025 looks very bright. The team is as strong on paper as ever, the list is healthier than it's ever been and our window looks as open as I can remember.

I felt supremely confident. I thought we were a better side than Richmond. It was truly heartbreaking. After everything the club had gone through, to win the flag would have meant so, so much!

History showed that Richmond was the far better side on the day, and if there was any consolation, we lost to a side that went on to dominate the competition for a few years. We lost to a dynasty team.

The entire Eddie Betts era (up to the GF at least) was a joy

We could probably pick off another GWS player or two now, possibly even a gun if this season progresses well. The new GWS boys would be loving the big crowds. They would be talking to their old mates.

Surely Peatling's GF being buddies with Cumming's counts as a tie to us.

Leek Aleer was into us wasn’t he?
I thought he was with our Next Generation Academy as a junior and did rehab at the club after breaking his leg.

Seems like he can't break into the GWS defence, so will probably be seeking a trade. Would think we'd be in the box seat if interested, but also read that the Saints are going to throw a stack of cash at him.
