Same here, I remember playing kick to kick in the backyard pretending I was him.
Absolutely. Roach and Jess were my two go to's. He was a superstar for us.

My first Tiger player crush as a kid. Get well Roachy.
How thrilled I was to watch the 1980 Grand Final Parade live as a 11yo and then run into Disco and Barry Rowlings in Myers as they were discussing where to get lunch. They both happily signed autographs. I'll remember that till the day I die.

Love ya Roachy and get well soon.

This is news to me……hope it’s not serious.
Roachy was my very first sporting idol as a kid and was absolutely obsessed with his silky smooth kicking style and that MOTY in 79. Not only a great footballer but an even better bloke…
Proudly have a signed large colour photograph of that mark and no.8 jumper.
Absolutely devo about this.

Sad news, hope Roachy makes a full and speedy recovery from recent heart surgery.
Just reminiscing, that 1980 premiership side, really stoked the love and passion I had for the mighty tigers.
Duffel coats were the norm back in high school and the famous number 8 appeared regularly on them.
Kick to kick in the schoolyard, you would regularly hear from the Richmond supporters cries of Roachy as everyone attempted to take hangers over each other.

That Tigers premiership side that was something else, the Tigers that season played a tough, hard, skilful brand of footy and would on occasions kick skyscraper scores by the final siren.
Definitely some iconic premiership players were in that side, featuring:
Geoff "Pretty Boy" Raines, Mark 'General' Lee, Dale 'Flea' Weightman, Peter 'Woofer' Welsh, Jimmy 'The Ghost" Jess, Kevin Bartlett, Francis Bourke, Bryan Wood, Robert Wiley, Mervyn Keane, Micky Malthouse, David Cloke (plus honourable mentions to all the other tigers players that contributed to that wonderful premiership).

But there was no doubt from the Richmond faithful (and even some respectful opposition supporters), that Michael 'Disco" Roach was one of the most popular players in that team of champions, his ability to take spectacular pack marks and that beautiful run up and goal kicking technique (could easily kick a distance of 60-65 metres in his heyday) was a thing of beauty to watch on the footy field.

Roachy sitting on Kelvin Moores head. Higher than Joe Cocker. One of the greatest marks of all time.
