A little harsh on Berwick and Beacy.
Beacy a massive chance this year for the flag. Berwick have been disappointing but the they decided to come into the league after years of being the big fish, at the time it was a good move but I don't think they saw half the squad going the year the moved across.

I just look at it overall and think… bluntly, what have they really brought to the league? Nothing. They haven’t added to the league in terms of quality. When they joined there was all the talk of enormous population and junior clubs and juggernauts… but once again it’s shown that these clubs from country or smaller leagues just aren’t up to the quality at the top end of metro premier divisions.

(on that I won’t mention Rowville absolutely belting YCW on the weekend… just a practice match 😉)

At least Noble Park and Balwyn have genuinely added quality to the league at the top end and stopped the permanent Vermont show. But Berwick and Beaconsfield aren’t any stronger than 10 other eastern clubs and haven’t made a significant difference.

In any case I believe both will be playing SFNL within 5-10 years, they won’t want to go with their tails between their legs but once new committees etc fully roll through, it makes too much sense with the geography and all their traditional rivals there.

You can equate this to the AFL as well Since coming into the league
GWS and GC have hurt Victorian clubs like North Carlton and Essendon. Dilutes the talent and seriously …..what have GC and GWS done to improve the AFL

They have brought in cash however, an extra game a week = more TV dollars. Not the case at local level.

The main reason GC and GWS were brought into the AFL was to grow the growth of Aussie rules in the northern states as we all know this is rugby territory.Personally I think GWS should play some home games at the SCG as I would be interested to see if they drew better crowds then their current venue. As for the EFNL similar thoughts as outside_off.

Adding Beaconsfield or Berwick hasn't diluted talent pool or caused Doncaster's problems. Whether these teams play southern, eastern or bush footy doesn't matter. They would still be recruiting players in whatever competition they play.

Easy to blame the newcomers but really not their fault.
Yeah very true wasn’t long ago they had Nathan Thompson, Ben kinnear, Ben Johnson, Arron fiora, heath scotland all running around for them!

This downfall no due to Berwick or Beaconsfield, it’s always been hard for them to field numbers haven’t had a strong reserves side in many years. These things just happen as unfortunate as they are but committees from last 10 years need to take accountability of some form for bad planning, poor junior development programs more can always be done just a shame sometimes it takes something like this to realise it!

Rowville Edi Asp a draw against a team coming up from Div 2… Just a practice match 😏

This league needs to grow or die.

It has to expand as the catchment base around the East is getting smaller with more "non-football" families moving in.
Been a while since I posted…but I disagree. I think the league needs to retract unfortunately for a lot of traditional eastern clubs. Think about the city of Knox. 25-30 years ago, the KJFA was huge. Kids everywhere at every club. Now those clubs are battling the same thing every sport is, but in an area in a 7 km radius. With a bigger ethnic dilution amongst the recruitment area, we don’t see the Asian or sub continental kids playing footy. Gets in the way of school work. Add the computer game factor…it’s a struggle to win the hearts and minds. That’s what has hurt Doncaster, amd will hurt other clubs in that corridor, especially when the money stops and they need to relay on kids coming thru. It’s tough to see but it won’t be the last unless something seriously changes in society.

By expanding I mean the playing base. We can't give in to the idea that there is no longer a place for local footy in the lives of Victorians.

I get that the current bout of immigrants aren't interested in amalgamating, when the Italians and Greks and Central and Eastern Europeans came to Australia, they all wanted to be involved in our funny little game. the current crop aren't interested in what made up Australia and community, they are all on their own doing their own thing.

Numbers are down everywhere but somehow we need to find a way to grow the game.

India is set to be the largest population in the world, and they are outnumbing the Asian immigrants in Australia. The Indians love cricket and are not interested in Aussie Rules. The times are a-changing, as those who love football aren't producing children at the rate the immigrants are. We also have a lot of kids now playing basketball, and the AFL's response is to cut off Free to Air TV games that promote Australian Rules Football.

But it's true, just look around you.

We are not replenishing players.

Junior teams these days are absolutely struggling for numbers.

This is starting to progress onto seniors and in a few years, a lot more teams are going to struggle.

Its happening now.

Has the AFL actually cut off free to air games? The same amount of free to air games this season as last season.

Doncaster shark carcass is scattered all over the place. I understand cashed up Healesville and Templestowe have been fighting for the fins and others picking over the body like seagulls a hot chip. Sad to see this once-giant of the sea get washed up.

Still no official statement from either Doncaster or the league. Surely something needs to be announced today with the season kicking off tomorrow and Div 1 next week
Perhaps the board of the league & the club have not been aligned with what should happen for 2025.

Personally I think 3 games on free to air is good. Thursday night has overtaken satday night. Would be crazy if Thursday night was fox only.

Not sure why you care about delayed games in other states.
Surely there should be a free to air Saturday night game. Most local footy clubs have some sort of function on a Saturday night and would like to have the AFL on in the background. Granted most of them have Fox Footy now but Saturday night on free to air should be a given.

Remember when John Howard said, sport would always be on free to air. Well there is scope creep on everything and never trust a politician.

As of last night there was still EFNL hope of convincing a Div 2 club to go up, but its becoming unlikely. Wantirna South are no chance to return after relegation in 2024.

There is also no chance of a Div 4 club coming up so the landing spot for Doncaster would have to be Div 3 with Donvale already accepting to go up to Div 2.
