Great effort but does this say East Burwood are battling to get a 2nd,s side on the park.
No problem with second team. Looks like Choco won't be playing. Named in the team in the EFNL Fixtures/Results but not in the teams sent out to members. I'm pretty sure that at some stage this season he will get to 500.

Craig "Choco" O'Malley named in the 1's for his 497th game for East Burwood.

I thought it was an early April Fool's joke as he wasn't named Thursday night. :D:D:D

Great win today considering there were 5 regulars from last season not playing at all, including the captain, vice captain and last years B&F runner up.

Game of two halves. Mulgrave was in control in the first half but the Rams kicked 11 goals to 4 in the second half to take out the four points. Half-time the Rams were gone, whatever transpired in the rooms during the main break worked a treat.

Round 1 is always overanalysed. But looking at the scores you’d say the promoted Waverley Blues is the big result, a very good side who strengthened again and have dealt with Templestowe. If you keep half an eye on social media and hear what is being said out of clubs, you’d know the purple crew are very happy with their own prospects this year. Couple of burst bubbles and slightly deflated egos tonight I’d guess.

Interesting to see Oakleigh have a good win over Coldstream. Must be their first win in quite a while.

Full credit to them, particularly the coach who is obviously the big change there. My theory is that divisions in metro footy are closer now and therefore I thought they’d struggle again after going winless - as in D3 wasn’t a massive drop from D2. But Coldstream are a good unit so it’s a good win regardless of how they go this year.

Agree totally, I am happy to take the four points. Waverley Blues and East Burwood looks set to be a cracker for round 2.

Couldn’t agree more about Waverley Blues. Have quietly gone about things in the off season and backed their locals. Am a bit cynical about Templestowe who once again have shelled out big money to try and be successful. My guess is once again this will end in tears. Much rather see clubs invest in their younger players/ locals than play the boom and bust approach that Templestowe regularly follow.

The player points from the weekend would support that

Templestowe 42
Ringwood 38
Boronia 37
East Burwood 36
Heathmont 31
Knox 30
Mulgrave 30
Wav Blues 27
Upper Gully 26
The Basin 25

Unsurprisingly it also shows the clubs that don't have U19s, it is such a vital pathway from juniors to seniors, it's not good for the clubs that don't have them. Not that it's generally the club's fault, it is very hard to get the numbers up.

You clearly need a well-run Junior club. All clubs would love U19s and many struggle to field one and then you get some clubs with 2 squads. Swings and roundabouts.

How good is it to see those clubs like The Basin, UFTG, Waverley Blues, Knox, Heathmont and Mulgrave focusing on local players and not highly paid and often overrated recruits. Apart from football, these clubs are also playing an important role in society by providing a place and pathway for local players to play senior football and not become disillusioned as occurs at other clubs when imports are brought in on the mantra of having success. Also it costs a lot less financially and over time I can confidently state these clubs will be successful on and off field for a long period of time. It should also be noted many of these clubs have worked extremely hard in getting under age teams on the park for a number of years now.

It is good but the battle continues for them as they are D2 clubs, all the Premier clubs come along and hoover up all their talented juniors so they can "play at the highest level". Hint kids and their parents - playing Under 19s at some other "Premier" local club isn't the highest level.

I will add to that - there's nothing wrong with wanting to test yourself at a higher level.

That higher level is not bloody Under 19s.

There's been a huge shift in kids coming out of juniors since "back in my day"... didn't think it was that long ago, but anyway. They seem to want to continue their junior days in Under 19s.

If you're in the NAB League system then great, follow that and play where they tell you.

If you're not, your goal should be simple: play senior football. Go to a club where you can do that. Some clubs give kids a chance a senior level. Many (including most Premier clubs) do not.

If you play senior footy and are good enough, then go and do a VFL pre-season.

If anybody thinks running around with a bunch of 18yos is a higher level and they're developing then they're kidding themselves. I've watched plenty of footy - D1 - D3 senior teams would annihilate Premier U19s teams.

If you're 18 or 19 and half-decent, you should be playing senior footy.

All fair Bunk - but don't discount the importance of having 19s for the kids who might be capable of playing Seniors but just want to play with their mates from juniors while completing Yr12 etc. The opportunity to play Senior Footy is important for the players that want that, and just as important is to protect (if you know what I mean) the ones who could, but don't want to yet. It's a delicate balance.

Having 19s is essential to the longevity of any club.

I know its only 2 games in, but i think Mulgrave have been a bit disappointing. Big recruits in Jong and Roberts and 0-2. Waverley might end up being really good but it hasn't been an ideal start.

I don't think they are in danger of being relegated this year, even with double relegation because the bottom of this division is just so poor. But they would still want to take care of The Basin easily this week and get on the board.

They’d want to pick their act up. Following scores last year they looked like a bit of a Jeckyll and Hyde act. Might still be the same.

Their best looks great and in saying that 4 qtrs wins games, not 2.

Spot on Bunk and a good reason to head to Ram Stadium this Saturday, the game is set to be a cracker with WB undefeated in 19 games.
