Secondly, people can't surely think that picks 5 and 25 were fair compensation for a player of Beams' standard. No way. Beams is a proven gun and picks in a draft are never guaranteed to yield quality players. Also, Collingwood went hard at the draft last year, so they don't really need more kids coming into the side right now; they need quality players around the age of Beams or bit younger. To Collingwood, a contracted Beams is worth more than picks 5 and 25, and they were right not to accept the deal.

It was Brisbane's responsibility, if they wanted Beams, to pay what he's worth. They weren't willing to offer a decent player, so now they're not getting him.
