Got the Flu Vaccination for the first time ever yesterday because they offer it free at work.

Been hearing some absolute horror stories since about people getting sick shortly afterwards.... there are 3 people in my immediate team that refuse to get it because of their past experiences.

So far so good for me but i dont think i'm outta the woods yet. Made me question why i bothered to have it since i hardly get sick anyway.

So... will you be getting the Flu shot this year? Have you already had it? What have your experiences been?

Always do, and you can't get the flu from it since it doesn't contain a live virus.

I've had it every single year since 2006.

In 2005 I caught a nasty, and I mean really nasty, dose of the flu and was confined to bed for three weeks. It was the only time in my life when my throat has been so sore that not only could I not speak, I couldn't really eat solids either (the act of swallowing anything other than liquid was just too painful), and the soreness was so severe that it kept waking me up in the middle of the night too. The generalised muscle soreness was so bad that it took me about five minutes just to walk from the bedroom to the bathroom, and I've certainly never had such extreme fatigue either; I reckon I was sleeping about 15 hours a day.

So yeah, without hesitation I get the flu vaccine now, and I've never had any side effects, and I've also never had the flu since.

I ended up in hospital with the flu one year so I always get the vaccination now. It's not perfect but that's because the strain changes all the time. Still better than getting the full dose of the flu!

Yeah... i get that. Just don't get why so many people seem to experience some sort of illness shortly afterwards.

The Guillain-Barre Syndrome experiences, whilst no doubt would be extremely rare, are pretty scary. A lady at my work has been told by her GP not to get the injection after her sister ended up being paralysed from the neck down for 5 months with GBS which started 1 or 2 days after receiving the flu shot.

I get it every year. Used to work in a clinic and we were all required to have it.

Real flu is nasty stuff. More than 1000 people died in Australia last year from it. Not just older people, also knocks off young and fit ones.

All vaccinations carry a degree of risk. Flu vaccine is cultured in eggs, so some people react because of that. Much more common is a temperature and a little feeling off a couple of days later. The body reacting to the introduction of a foreign agent.

Millions of people world wide get the flu vaccine, the media highlights the extremely rare cases of adverse side affects which leads to some panic in the general public.

Who'd have thought, surly the media wouldn't exaggerate, sensationalize and use click bait headlines to grab their share of the 24/7 media cycle attention.

I'm referring to the people i have spoken to at work regarding their own personal accounts. Not the media

I did get one.

Despite the well know, if government denied risk, it might turn me into a brain eating zombie who denies the US ever landed on the Moon and it may make me confuse an old Greek stoner in Oregon with Big Foot.

I've had the flu once and it ****ing sucks. Actually that's a pretty big pet peeve of mine is people saying they're sick with the flu when its clearly a cold. I actually had a slight fever after getting my shot this year but nothing a little nurofen couldn't fix and it only last a day or so.

You have only had the flu one time?

You need to get out more.

i had the flu shot for the first time in 2016, got a really bad cold, didn't get the flu shot last year and didn't catch anything all year, still debating whether i get it this year

I have bad reactions to some vaccines and have to get them in hospital so I can be monitored, but I still get them. The not getting deadly diseases outweighs the risk in my opinion.
