H. McLachlan says the AFL is now in very detailed, advanced talks with the Vic. Govt. It is requesting the Vic. govt. spends c.$300,000,000 on improving the immediate, waterfront surrounds of Docklands stadium, & the stadium itself (restaurants etc): to make it a 365 day per year entertainment venue, & to boost the dockland's tourism potential. Also a new walkway/ pedestrian covered area between the stadium & Southern Cross Station could be built.

(Most believe the Docklands precinct, started in the 90's and half developed now, has been very successful in creating its desired aim of a high rise residential & office precinct. But it has been unsuccessful in achieving its other major aim of creating a new, thriving tourist precinct directly on the waterfront. Its restaurants are struggling, & visits to Docklands well down on the initial expectations).

This would be great, the place really is a ghost town at times with so much potential

Of course Gil will talk it up at every opportunity .... no $s in the Vic budget, not that any were expected.

An idea for if they wanted to put bigger screens in at Etihad would be to remove the "Etihad Stadium" signage from the top and then extend out to the sides to the size they want. Any seats behind the new screens would be lost of course but they'd be pretty shit seats anyway due to the height/angle and also being so close to the side of the pillars.

Hey guys heading to Melb next month for the Pies vs Crows game and figured I'd catch the Blues vs Cats game at Etihad as well as I've never been there before. Can anyone let me know if you purchase GA tickets where you can sit?

GA will be most of Level 3 I think you'll find. Some of the best seats on Level 3 will probably be reserved seats. Maybe if you pay the home team's board a visit they'll be able to give you a better indication of what is likely to be the seating arrangement.

As it is Carlton home game, GA will be on the top level only. On the wings, up to row G is reserved and GA is row H onwards. If you get there 30-45 minutes before the bounce you will be able to get a seat on the wing about 10-15 rows back on level 3 pretty easy. You will get a great view from there.

Thanks for the info. Just to clarify anything beyond Row H on level 3 will definitely not be reserved seating?

Yes. Only if it were fully ticketed would the area beyond row H be reserved (Carlton aren't going well enough to make it fully ticketed). As long as you arrive 30-45 minutes before the game you will get a seat near the start of the general admission section.

Made the mistake of driving back to home to Footscray from the east, not realising the Essendon game just finished today.

Footscray road was closed, 40,000+ people at the game and it still didn't take too long. It really is in such a great location. Transportation wise it couldn't be planned any better.

The planning and design around the stadium though is terrible and won't be easily fixed with ad-hock design solutions, as the problems with shadows and wind tunnels created by the buildings built close by will make it hard to grow any vegetion to soften the area.

Also with the wrong orientation of the stadium the argument of whether to keep the roof open on sunny days will always be there.

Had they got the axes right, set back the nearby buildings (and demanded more walkability thtough them) and designed more greenspace around the statium, it would be much more loved. But even 300 mil does nothing to fix most of those problems.

The whole dock lands precinct is Frankenstein though isn't it?

Yeah, Docklands is rubbish, the only thing bringing me there is the stadium. The placement of the stadium and its connections to multiple modes of transportation is its strength. Anyone who says Etihad should be knocked down and moved to open up docklands has it the wrong way.

The same reason i don't spend any time in docklands is the same as why i never go to the spencer street end of Collins street. Only things there are offices with terrible cafes connected and a few apartment towers.

Exactly. Fix the immediate surrounding area and you're fine. The stadium will always suffer from not-the-MCG-itis

Also make it a more welcoming place, easier for parking and so forth, not just visually good but a place people want to go. Parking is usually highly priced and not very inviting...

Parking is $10 in the Channel 9 building about 100m away! They have really dropped prices around the area now.

Hey guys. Not sure what forum this question should go in, this is closest to it. I have been looking at purchasing either a Centre Wing or Medallion Club membership. It's impossible to find prices anywhere. I have sent in an enquiry and waiting for the return phone call or email, but while I'm waiting I was wondering if anyone here knows the pricing of both memberships?
Thanks in advance.
