This series is going downhill quickly for me. First four episodes were all pretty good, 5 & 6 were passable, the last three haven't been great imo.

The Zygon episodes had me excited at first, I think they're an interesting creature, but the double-header fell well short of its potential. In the first part, there were numerous instances of mind-numbingly stupid characters, and the social commentary was as subtle as a brick. The resolution was a bit drawn out too. It wasn't terrible, but I'd certainly say it was 'bad.'

This week's was just god awful... One of the worst of new Who, almost certainly the worst with Capaldi (yes, even worse than Kill The Moon.)

Utterly dull for one thing. No character development of the rescue team; the creatures tried to be terrifying, but they'd have nursed a three-year old to sleep. The story wasn't engaging; something about sleep minimisation, eye dust, a professor and gravity shields? I only just watched it, and I can't fully explain what was meant to be happening. I got that it was meant to be a 'found footage: horror video' that the professor had made, but I can't work out a comprehensive plot within that video that we were meant to be following.

The camerawork was obviously trying to emulate the 'dust footage,' but it was neither realistic, nor was it pleasant to watch. A lot of shots were either jerky, too far out, really dark, or just from really awkward angles. Perhaps I'm being picky, but it caught my attention within the first minute and developing a 45-minute critique of the camerawork was more enthralling than the plot.

No opening theme either which was oddly disconcerting.

The preview for next week looks alright though. Fingers crossed.

Holy Shit!

Face the Raven is probably the best season in by far the best, most high quality season since the show returned in 2005.

Very powerful episode. Hopefully Sarah Dollard is given more episodes to write next year, what a talent.

With zero spoilers please ManWithNoName how do you rate the current season in comparison to the first so far?

(I bloody missed too much of the start so I have to wait until it's replayed on Fox next year or something.)
I've only seen about half of it, but it's enjoyable enough. The first two episodes are among the best since 2005. I've enjoyed the two Maisie Williams episodes. Capaldi's fantastic, and the time's right for a change in companion, as was announced before the season started.

Thanks, I missed this thread getting bumped and the first 3 episodes were off Iview when I tried to look at catching up. Really like Capaldi's doctor and hoping that his stories improved this season after being a bit mediocre last year.

This must be one of the few positive reviews I've heard on the Internet. So many people hated it.

Personally, I thought it was a great series, obviously a couple of hit and misses, but overall it was great.

Any episodes on iview only remain there for a week unfortunately, unless you download them from elsewhere.
As for the stories, they have definitely improved. The ones at the start and ending especially are wonderful (in my opinion). Yes there's mediocre episodes, but it's more about poor writing than Capaldi's (and his support cast) acting abilities

I'll give credit where it's due, 'Face the Raven' and 'Heaven Sent' were both great episodes (Heaven Sent in particular was one of the best for some time). 'Hell Bent' started well too, but could have finished better.

A decent series overall, an improvement on last year's if nothing else.

The second last episode, Heaven Sent, was one of the most powerful and well done that I've seen in some time. Blew my mind.

Watching repeats of Eccleston gee it's frustrating that he was on the show so very briefly.
It's never been clear what happened, but it sounds like there was something between him and either Davies or the BBC. Shame. He was fantastic. I said years ago that I wanted the 50th Anniversary special to be a 4 part Time War story with McGann, Eccleston, Tennant and Smith. If you include Night of the Doctor I was almost bang on. (Wanted it to be 4 parts as a throwback to the old way they did episodes).

Agree Eccleston was the best of the modern bunch, but watching that last river song episode made me realise how ridiculous and scatterbrained the show has become. few dramatic moments are given time to breath with out continual jiving breaking in. less is better in alot of ways. thats partly why i miss the simpler times of the classic era

Moffat constantly tries to do too much imo.

I'd also heard that he wasn't thrilled with the treatment some members of the crew received and left due to that.

Read the same as well, so wouldn't be surprised if it is a combination of factors.

I believe the rumour was that he wasn't impressed with the level of professionalism/on-set antics of a certain member of the cast and how Davies as EP let them get away with it/encouraged it.
