I think the most apt description of Penberthy is "Chardonnay Leftie".

Gee I don't know about that, almost all of his views sit in the economic rationalist, "free markets are the be all and end all camp". See his thoughts on the ABC and the News Ltd pay wall.

All this after, according to Wikipedia, being the president of a Marxist club in university.

Anyone who goes from hard left to hard right so quickly must have question marks over them.

The very mark of the "Chardonnay Left". They believe in the ideal of equality for all so long as their privilege isn't compromised. Ie, "trust us (the middle class) to make your lives better, because you (the working class) will always go too far, and my privilege will come under threat".

If they're honest these people nearly always worship at the alter of free market capitalism, no matter how many Noam Chomsky books they might read.

Hence the 'chardonnay' prefix.

You gotta be kidding. His wife is Kate Ellis from the Labor right who are so far from socialists it's not funny. He's also an editor for News Ltd, not many lefties employed by that organisation.

So a former lefty who is now a righty is a Chardonnay socialist? When do they just become a righty?

Hard right? Haha. Penbo is a Lefty. You do know he's married to ALP federal MP Kate Ellis? Left (ahem) his (then) wife for her. The pair of them are proud Crows fans.

From this article:

"For example, Australian left-wing "true believers" levelled it at supporters of the failed republic referendum of 1999 (where the vote was split not along conventional party lines but very much along socio-economic divides, with the rich overwhelmingly supporting the change while the less well-off were opposed – a superficially bizarre pattern for a non-economic issue). Staunch Australian right-wingers, on the other hand, level it at those who support such things as government funding for the arts, free tertiary education, and the ABC – all causes which are described by critics as "middle-class welfare."

Sounds like Penbo is on one side of this argument, and it's not the Chardonnay socialist.

I don't think you necessarily acquire your spouse's politically leanings when you get married - see James Carville and Mary Matalin, Natasha Stott Despoja and Ian Smith.

So he is the member for the member for Adelaide...

I'm confused. Are you saying that you think that Penberthy is a staunch right winger?

I don't think anyone suggested that his political leanings are due to his relationship with Ellis. Well at least I wasn't.
I've always thought his politics were fairly obvious.

As an aside... Stott Despoja is the quintessential chardonnay socialist.

Heard from a highly-credible source she only joined the Labor right faction because they happened to call her first.

I am suggesting he leans that way, yes.

Response to Andre. Most of the political commentary I've seen from him is right-leaning, including strong criticism of the ABC, which as noted above is an entity the Chardonnay socialist is inclined to support.

I thought his politics were obvious too, liberal on social issues but economically very much on the right. As for his earlier politics his lord and master Uncle Rupert was a Marxist in his youth too...

I can't agree about Despoja either, I'd describe her as a small l liberal, as most Democrats were.

Penberthy followed Sturt pre Crows.

He has always been seen more as more right-wing type, than left. Hence it was seen as an odd match when he married Ellis.
