WARNING: Tomorrow's Herald Sun re-lives the disaster of the 1998 GF.

Can't believe it has been 10 years.

Double jars?

Can't be much wrong with that.

I was a bit younger than most way back in 1998, and was just sad because we lost. I didn't really understand how we lost (I knew that whoever kicks the best score wins...). Now I look at the scorecard, and think "sh1t, how did we screw that one up so badly?"

I mean, 4.18 after 1/4 time? If that was now, I don't know how I'd handle it.

I've been to plenty of other GFs but unfortunately '98 was the only GF that North played in... it brings back some terrible memories. Every time we get the yips in front of goal I'm reminded of that dark day in our history.

If that was now, I don't know how I'd handle it.

You'd sit in the spa at your mate's place and drink 18 cans of whatever you could find, then switch to weird-arse cocktails that your equally pissed but less depressed friends are making up mindless names for. At some stages you would sing the crows theme song, just to try and show that it didn't matter, but it would. You wouldn't even notice the hangover the next day, and the sight of the Sunday newspaper would have you screaming in terror. The name Darren Jarman would still make your spine freeze to this very day.

I was at the game. Was only 11 and till this day I am still mystified as to how we lost that match of footy. The kicking was just terrible. Reminds me some of the goal kicking that the current batch turn out on some weekends...

It has been interesting and depressing to read the 10 year ago disaster and 30 year ago disaster in one week.

Today's focusses upon Craven chopping up Carey. He says in the third q Carey got frustrated and started getting filthy on teammates. The runner came out and told him to go up in the middle and he brushed him away.

They probably should have put a footnote on this article as to how a team that was blown out of the finals in week one by Melbourne still made it to the GF. Thankfully the finals system was fixed to what it is today.

Gaso

My enduring memory of that day is Pickett chase and smother in the second quarter, the ball rebounded and I think we scored, I thought thats it we'll win, unfortunately it seems so did the 22 players, can't remember anything else about 1998.

BOYS...it was tough, I remember just being speechless. At half-time, my mates said we were home, but I believed we had wasted our chances and i commented that if the Crows got the first couple after half-time, we were in deep trouble as we had spent so much petrol for bugga all result.
Sure enough...wish I was wrong.
BUT...i am sure we wouldn't have won in 1999 had we won in 1998. They were on a mission in 99, and wasn't beating Carlton sweet? Especially after the Bombers bowed out! I have rarely been so happy after a prelim, the Blues were never going to win.
Had we not won in 99, I'd still rue the day, but I've made my peace with it. That doesn't mean I want to watch a replay of it, but it all worked out okay in the end 12 months later.:thumbsu:

the second quarter of the 1998 grand final made the performance against port adelaide in round 22 look good. how many points can one kick? i remember carey hitting the post from 3 metres out trying to be fancy with a dribble kick.

the highlight of 1998 for me was the round 22 win over footscray... 2 teams, friday night, 80k at the g, both equal on points, winner gets top spot.. north wins with goal in the final minute !!

Somehow managed to get a ticket that day, not 96 or 99.

Remember Fruity kicking a goal on 3/4 time (correct me if Im wrong?) But with that feeling that we were gonna screw up a massive blown opportunity. Swirly disgusting winds that day too.

Worst.day.ever.

Was good to see 'The Greatest' Mr Ali in a North scarf tho :thumbsu:

Ripping goal by Boomer too that sealed the match.

Having a great day in the Sun drinking Lemon Ruskis (remember them) had a $5 bet for first goal on Johnny Blakey which was paying 80-1. So win $400 North are on top thinking this the the best day of my life at Half-time.

We all remember what happened after that.
