Most of what he says is best avoided. Honestly I’m as wary of the hangers on jumping on this apology as vindication of everything they ever said as I am of everyone who jumped in to support Jackson’s tweet. The exchange about Sonja’s letter was about that and that only - it doesn‘t preempt the investigation that is needed.

I know. I used to follow him on Twitter but had to stop following him because he has some pretty cooked takes. I found that one reading through the quoted replies and thought I’d share it because I think he’s right on this occasion.

I reckon I agree with him more than I disagree but yeah he throws in the odd head-scratcher.

I can’t remember what it was that got me to unfollow him, it was probably just a build up of things. Same thing happened with Andrew Bogart. I try to keep my feed balanced so I follow people I don’t agree with because I don’t want an echo chamber.

I had quote tweeted him, so blocking me made my tweet make no sense. just another tactic so he gets the final say.

The only way Russell will get the final say on this one is if he’s walking around the CBD in 6 months time with a placard, yelling. Which is likely where he’s heading.

Even his little Twitter posse will get board of this and move on to the next topic to be outraged by.

We'll build a statue of her on that exact spot. I'll pay for it.

Noted.

As for Rusty the f***knuckle turning off comments, I’m kind of glad as the vitriol which was coming his way would’ve been of epic proportions and, as is his M.O., he’d have turned that into more evidence for his supporters to see him as a martyr.

F** him!

Already enough of his supporters in the main board thread. I’ve quit watching and posting there.

I know we’re mortal enemies but I’m with you guys on this one - Russell Jackson, what a pathetic man. How he can pretend he has acted ethically from the start is beyond me. I support investigative journalism but not the blatant bias and agenda he has made clear. And turning off replies to his apology - coward.

Just a guess, but if it’s like every other taxpayer funded HR department, I suspect it’s pretty rare for them to hold meetings outside Monday to Friday.
Wouldn’t be surprised if the dudes who handle the complaints inbox would be the same.
Feck your clever.
Retraction posted monday night.
Spot on.

This journo has done some amazing work in the past. He was wrong on Sonja but makes an excellent point here. Time will tell whether he drifted too far into ‘advocate’ in the story.

Nope, if he cared about the ongoing well being of the accusers or other indigenous people he would have handled it differently. Instead he left it as front page news for weeks, with it impossible for them to remain anonymous, and with the whole country speculating who they are.

He’s to blame for the actions of plenty in this thread?

If Sonja talking about trade week triggers the accusers, it stands to reason that every article talking about forced abortions and forced separations that followed his article is also very traumatic for the accusers.

Hence if he had handled things differently all these things could be investigated etc without being front page news.

I think a key point is his work previously (and agree it has been amazing) has focused on events that are 20+ years in the past, meaning those being accused of wrongdoing are dead, or retired, and not actively involved in the roles they were in at the time. That makes it easier to tell a story and stray into advocacy.

This is a little bit different - he is telling people's stories that involve horrific and career-ending allegations against active coaches. There was always going to be push back and scrutiny and he isn't doing himself or the accusers any favours by going on the attack before a full process has been carried out.
