If we can somehow manage to use next years first to get both Smith and Rankine this year, I'll abuse myself for an extended period.

Wankin' for Rankine

I've been saying this for weeks.

Just get it done.

Poster in Draft Rumours thread on the Trade, Draft and FA board claiming we are keen on Smith (apparently Smiths mother is the source)
Another one there that Hately will join Lukosius and Rankine/Rozee at the Suns. So either Hately flys into pick 6 or GC look to trade down a little.

My understanding is that we have told Smith that he will be our first pick. He would be our first pick at pick #1 too. We will only trade up if we think the Saints will take him at 4 (and hence get in before they do).

He is, in our recruiters eyes, the best player in the draft.

Hately is perfect for gcs to be honest

Ready to play. High character. Sa lad. As likely to stick around as anyone.

They absolutely should trade pick 19 + ? For a pick to nab him during the draft

That’s huge wraps on the kid. And rightly so. He’s outstanding in talent and outstanding in character.

Port's trading strategy now make more sense if the rumours about Smith are true, especially trading to get pick 5. Looks like the club is confident of grabbing him at 5, but a let less so at 6.

Recruiters do tons of homework on the young players, yet you still get a lot of variation in their top 5 picks. Looks like Port is in the minority in ranking Smith at 1, so they'd be stoked to pick him at 5. Of course, time will tell if their assessment is right or at least close to right.

Which Smith- Ely or Bailey?

I don't see it. In the SA v VM game he was unable to exert himself against better opposition. He was strong in the contest but his disposal was poor even when he had time. He couldn't find a way to be damaging.

He was great against Vic Country but the game of the champs was VM v SA- a game totally torn apart by guess who??? Rankine. The game might have been a close contest but for one person- Rankine. Three goals in the first quarter, 5 for the game, almost every touch not only damaging but devastating.

If our recruiters game away from that game thinking Smith was the best player in the draft pool, they have a mental disability.

I hope we rate him so highly due to his actual football ability and not some metrics that Robert Younger and co are fapping over

I've already said it a number of times but if Ben King is there at 10 we need to grab him.

Develop him in the Maggies alongside McKenzie down back. Watts, Frampton, Ladhams up forward.
Ben King at 10 is huge

I know I'm one of the Rozee naysayers on this board but by golly is Ben King undersold on here

Any of the "elite 8) at our current pick 10 (11 come draft day) is pants down laps around the table time

10 and next year's first would get us 6, wouldn't it? I feel like GC would be on board with that one, as that would set them up with 3 first rounders next year.

1. Walsh
2. Luko
3. Rozee
4. Max King

Leaving us Smith and Rankine, one a dedicated hard worker and one with X factor out the wazoo, is a perfect outcome.

Who is going to ruin it for us

Me too. Stats have their place but you want recruiters to be good spotters of talent based on seeing players play.

Good!

Finally got up to scratch on my draft knowledge and the fact that will can get one of Walsh, Luko, Smith, Rankine, Rozee or the Kings genuinely excites me. We are guaranteed a fantastic player at #5, and any one of those guys would fill a need for us. Obviously Rozee and Rankine would fit the more needed position of a forward/midfielder in Chad's absence but getting someone like Luko or one of the Kings to sit alongside Marshall for the next 10 years would be great. Walsh and Smith speak for themselves as future 200+ game midfielders.

If we take Smith at #5 like is rumoured and one of Luko or Rankine is somehow there at #6, that's probably the only scenario I'd trade up in. Getting an uber-professional like Smith and pairing him with an absolute talent like Luko/Rankine would be the ultimate draft win. One can dream.
