The poster who said it wouldn't make sense for us to trade from 6 to 5 to get Ben King probably nailed it.

Smith or Rankine look to be the more likely candidates.

Walsh, Luko, Rankine, Smith, Max. I'd expect our pick 5 will be one of these players. Anyone else feels like a reach.

I can see the attraction to the King boys, they're not like a Patton or Boyd who are massive units but aren't athletically gifted like the Kings. They'll be suited to the modern game where you want your talls to be mobile (Westhoff) with the ability to play a variety of positions. If they think Ben won't be there at 10 then pull the trigger at 5. I initially had no thought of picking a tall but I can see the logic, you're still likely to get 2 very good mids with our next 2 picks.

I could live with Max King at #5. I'll melt if we draft Ben at #5. If he's still there at #10, then sure.

This is part of my trepidation with picking either King, we just don’t have a great record of developing our own. Willits, Salter, Butcher, D.Stew, Shaw, Harvey all massive busts. Some of those guys might’ve just not been up to it to begin with but still, it doesn’t make for good reading.

Butcher and maybe Shaw were the only guys on that list who had the remotest chance of making it as a KPF at AFL level. The rest of those picks are on our recruiters, not our development.

I'm confused - which King is the good one? I assume not the one that we pick...
Max is the big strong forward and kicked 8.7 in Rd 1 of the TAC Cup then did his ACL and missed the rest of the season. Ben is the more versatile one, can play KPD as well as KPF but isn't as good as Max at KPF position but has a bigger work rate than Max.

Why would they give anything away?

If you want something, sometimes you have to give something up.

I love how all the bashing of king comes from a game where he ******* kicked 8.7

You have to look deeper than raw stats, especially in under age games. Max King is freaky man child with go go gadget arms beating up on undersized kids (by comparison). He won’t have that much of a physical advantage in the AFL not too mention that he’ll have to contend with better team defences as well.

Ben Jacobs had a 47 possession game for Vic Metro. Has he even had a 27 possession game in the AFL?

its very hard to judge big forwards at a young level because the defenders they stand on are only twigs and you never know how they are gonna go against a decent sized body or defensive system, thats why Luko is so good, because he's shown it

for me theres a standout top 5, two players close to those 5, then even ish right through to 15 -18 range. (not including f/s or academy picks)

trading to 5 makes a lot of sense if its on of the standout 5!

I think the Kings physical advantage is their athleticism, they can be like an Eric Hipwood, he can't out-body defenders but his size, speed and mobility cause issues for defenders.

Interest comments from Kevin Sheehan www.sen.com.au/news/2018/11/09/sheehan-names-who-he-would-take-with-pick-one/

Sheehan says Geelong Falcon’s prodigy Sam Walsh or injured Sandringham Dragons forward Max King are the two he would select if he had the choice, and believes up to six players are good enough to be taken with the coveted pick.

“Max King and Sam Walsh, they’d be the two in the frame,” Sheehan told SEN’s KB and The Doc.

“I could add another four to that because I think that Jack Lukosius, Izak Rankine, Ben King and Nick Blakey are all outstanding prospects and in any given year could go at one.

if there were a Victorian (bar King) they could be considered a #1 prospect

Some draft goss from Fox Sports

  • Walsh, Lukosius, Rankine to go top 3
  • Saints most likely to pick Max King as a once in a generation key forward. But they are tempted by Bailey Smith and Jye Caldwell
  • Saints pick to unlock draft - Port keen on either King if Saints leave them both on the table
  • Port or Saints to bid on Blakey
  • Rozee could slide to 10
  • Chayce Jones to go top 10, Adelaide keen
  • Jordan Clark to go top 10
  • Dogs keen on Smith or Ben King

I don't get all the rukkas about giving up all our draft collateral to maybe not pick who you want. In the grand scheme of things going from 6 to 5 cost us nothing, it cost Brisbane nothing. We weren't going to use our slew of picks we had so upgrading 11 to 6 was a no brainer. Half the Adelaide board are pulling their hair out that they didn't do it first and now we have a lot more control over our draft destiny then before.

If we go caldwell at 5, it's because we can not

I also don't buy into these guys stuffing up a draft... Outside of 2013 I still can't believe we went impey over crouch...

If we take one of the King brothers then its official, we have had a sea change.

Marshall first (really second) pick of our 2 first round picks in 2016 and play him in a final in 2017. Hayes picked - more because he fell to us, but we couldn't say no. Finally play Billy and he does ok. Recruit Lycett. Re-sign Ladhams despite having a nothing 2018 season mainly due to injuries. Pick a King brother with pick 5.

Maybe Ken and co have worked out that the shrimps they love so much, wont cut it, when it really counts.

It's great draft to have 3 picks inside 15. The Butcher, Pittard, Moore draft was nowhere near as strong. Fyfe developed into something no-one, not even Freo, saw at the time.

The top 6 on my list (Lukosius, Rankine,Walsh, Rozee, Smith, M.King) would all probably have gone No1 if born a year earlier. Of course, that would leave Mrs King giving birth to twins a year aparto_O.

I said this was an industry defined super draft to go with 2001, 2006 and 2008. Someone said no its not its just the top end, think they said top 20 stands out.

Well Kevin Sheehan reckons its a super draft, even if the rest of the industry don't back him up. Reckons its the best draft since 2001. And whilst Sheehan is usually Mr Positivity, you know he watches a shitload of junior footy each year and knows all the top 200 players in each draft

Adelaide and Port Adelaide’s hopes of moving up the AFL draft board have been made tougher, with draft expert Kevin Sheehan declaring four players have separated themselves from the pack.

A week before what Sheehan described as the strongest draft since the 2001 “Super Draft’’, the AFL talent ambassador said South Australians Jack Lukosius and Izak Rankine and Victorians Sam Walsh and Max King had emerged as the four standout prospects.
......
Sheehan conceded it would be tough for the two clubs to find a trade partner in the top four — Carlton has pick 1, Gold Coast 2 and 3 and St Kilda 4 — because of the clear gap between the core four and the rest. “They are the four players who, for me, are in the conversation to be taken at pick 1,’’ Sheehan told The Advertiser. “King, Lukosius, Rankine and Walsh — you could make a strong case for all of them to go at No. 1, based on their performances in the past few years, their potential and their ability to change games......

Davies said exactly this... no way we don’t pick the best available left out of our top 5.

We seriously have nothing tall up forward.
Dixon is not getting any younger and I’m not 100% sold on Marshall as our next Goal kicking forward.
Not much use drafting mids if there kicking to a Sam&Jake forward line.

totally agree!
dixon getting on and picks up injuries
Ryder nearly done
Lycett ruckman resting forward
Westhoff could be his last could go another 5
Watts not a forward forward

so that leaves 1 developing.....marshall who has great potential but not proven yet

a max king would be a massive get for us!

If we do take Ben King with 5, it'll confirm for me that those in charge of our list and team have completely lost perspective of where this side and list is at.

We have a need for a key back to develop away in the SANFL over the next couple years, and we can get that with a rookie selection. But we have no need to waste a top pick on such a player.

Our picks must be speedy mids. Our midfield is incredibly over rated, lacks pace, lacks any players who can use the ball effectively, and lacks players that can rack the touches up on the outside.

For me pick 5 has to be Rozee, Smith or Rankine.

M King I could live with, as he'd be a long term investment to replace Dixon, and partner with Marshall, but I'd be concerned about breaking up the twins, and taking a punt on a key forward who did a knee last year when it is the midfield where our biggest weakness lies.

No arguments Max King fills a need for us. Question is, with pick 5 do you want King or a player like Rankine or Rozee who are both elite talents, add much needed pace but get games come round 1 and makes us better sides immediately and may help us win a flag next year.

If both Kings are available at 5 there is a chance one slips to 10. There are only 4 picks before we get our next selection at 10, you have to look at who GC, WB, Crows and GWS take ?

i called you out at the time, not surprised Sheehan has said that

the 01 and even to a lesser extent 08 and 06 drafts still had plenty of great careers post the 2nd round, i don't think this will be case in this draft

Max king will be gone b4 pick 10
Ben king could still be there.

If we grab one... might as well grab the 2nd.
But that leaves us with zero pace/polish on the outside.
What to do?
This years draft is going to be fun.
