NORTH MELBOURNE

Pick 8: LUKE MCDONALD (Werribee, Vic) 188cm, 85kg
The highest father/son draft pick in history, but Luke McDonald is every bit worthy of it. Had he not been a father/son selection, McDonald is considered a top five selection and a future AFL captain. However, for Roos fans – McDonald is an elite kick, a brilliant mark, and has one of the most penetrating kicks of this year’s draft crop. McDonald can let fly a 60 metre pass that will find its way onto the chest of a teammate. His lace out deliveries whether fired from off a back flank, or from the midfield, making McDonald a 100 metre player. Added to this, McDonald has tremendous speed and agility, and loves to take-off on line-breaking runs – an attribute that will constantly hurt the opposition. Although an attacking weapon, McDonald is brilliant one-on-one and will taste senior action very early in his career; look for him to become a mainstay off half back, firing weapons weekly.

Pick 30: TRENT DUMONT (Norwood, SA) 186cm, 83kg
There was a trend in last year’s draft, that being a lot of players who had played a large amount of senior football where taken a lot higher up the draft, a factor that clubs highly take into consideration. For Trent Dumont, this is no different. Not only has his senior football at Norwood alongside James Aish shot him to stardom, but his National Championships was an indicator of just how highly clubs are rating Dumont. In Dumont’s 12 games for the Redlegs this year, he averaged 17 possessions, including four clearances a game at senior level, including an eye-catching performance in the grand final win, with elite disposal. With a deadly right foot and elite decision making, Dumont can play through the midfield – either inside or out – and also has enough versatility in his game to be utilised off half forward or half back, where his run and carry and defensive abilities one-on-one, coupled with the fact that he rarely goes to ground, or is beaten make him hot prospect for North.

Pick 47: BEN BROWN (Werribee, Vic) 190cm, 99kg
After a stellar season for Werribee in the VFL – Ben Brown, a big Ruckman come key forward in his first year of VFL football at Werribee has quickly shot himself into draft contention after a consistent season. Brown was a former Tasmanian under-18 and senior representative only a few years ago, but went undrafted after areas of his game required work. Brown has a terrific aerobic capacity and contested-marking ability who also competes ferociously at ground level. A bit like Jack Gunston, Brown is just as reliable as they come from a set shot with a clean routine and the ability to sink goals from all over the park. level.

Verdict: 8/10
Really like North Melbourne’s drafting strategy, and they’ve netted themselves some fantastic outcomes. McDonald will slot into the side with immediate impact in 2014, whilst Trent Dumont will be given every bit of an opportunity to hold down a position on a wing, after playing the year out at senior SANFL level. The Roos know their window is just starting to open, and but adding another mature age forward/ruck into the mix who can come in and play when required really adds to the depth of North’s impressive list. The fact that Dumont lasted until pick 30 is a steal in itself, he’s got that outside ability the Roos were after.

I generally hate draft/footy journalism as a rule, but this SUPERCOACHPAIGE is next level rubbish.

The site doesn't have a critical thing to say about anyone or any teams strategy, and then just plucks different ratings followed by overwhelmingly positive comments without any clarifications as to why they got a 10 or a 7.

It's not hard to go through Knightmare's, and Emma Quayle's mock drafts and do some paraphrasing.

... and this has to be right up there with the dumbest things ever written -

First, they shocked everyone when they took Darcy Lang earlier than expected, but you know this kid is now going to go on to become a premiership player and a Brownlow medallist now.

Teffy? Is that you?

The funny thing is Dumont actually reminds me a bit of NDS with his one pace and good decision making and disposal. Looks like a great get if he can be ready to go by round 1. Far better depth than Greenwood and Anthony imo.

Yep, the more one-paced midfielders we can get, the deeper our talent pool will be which will hold us in good stead come September.

Very happy with the draft.

Loved Luke's celebration. Thank goodness we have that as our offseason video to replace the scissor-paper-rock effort of last year. And no wonder he was celebrating, watching the draft from a living room in Utah with the boys while the other top tenners wait to hear which bottom-of-the-ladder side has picked them up. Then stand on-stage trying to smile while knowing that their adopted team will more than likely be vying for the wooden spoon sooner that a flag (perhaps Kade Kaleidoscope, Matt Hindenburg, and Nathan Freeway excepted with Gold Coast and COllingwood in the hunt). And there was our Lukey Mac, already living it up with a club on the rise, free from the stage show. It has been easy to forget what a brilliant pick number 8 we have here. Can't wait for his debut.

Then we got Trent 'Frenchy' Dumont. Very, very nice. Brewis has done it again grabbing a beauty. Sydney has shown us already that there will always be room for another tough, classy midfielder. Will watch with anticipation.

And finally, Ben 'The Mop' Brown. After some initial surprise and skepticism, I returned to my normal state of throwing full support behind any new draftee. Now I see the sense of picking Big Boy Benny. He is the Mabon replacement, as third ruck, but with precisely the ability to play the KPP role that Mabon could not. So he is backup ruck and forward-ruck. Don't expect him to get games next year unless we get struck down by injury, and feel sure that he would put in an honest showing if he does get a senior berth. And for those that suggest he needs a mow courtesy of Kanga Lotto, shame on you. That mop will be a bloody useful distraction to defenders trying to get a fist through all that hair, let alone seeing through it.

So welcome to the Son of a Gun, the Frenchman, and the Mop. Now all part of the North Melbourne family.

Better ruck at vfl currie or brown? Better forward aswell? Hopefully currie works on his forward game, but he has a well developed body

hurrah, somebody gets it; saw the Bees final series, and from memory Brown missed the first game, but thereafter he was one of their best; definitely an upgrade on Mabon, with plenty of further upside \ in a professional environment where he might put on between 5 and 10 kg (people might have also missed he did well at the draft combine)

So essentially we have added:
  • a ready to go gun LMac
  • a ready to go inside mid Dumont
  • a ready to go KPF Brown
  • a ready to go KPD Tippet
All performed strongly at state level and can be slotted into our team if needed. Pre draft I thought we were one KPF and KPD short, which has now been fixed.

Seems like the good times have continued on from our great October.

And an A grade midfielder in Dal Santo.

Pretty decent trade period IMHO.

There's no chance Brown would've been available in the rookie draft. Essendon were going to pick him up at 55. Also, if they're going to the trouble to adjust lockers and give him number 50 instead of 36, he isn't trade bait.

Y
Will be interesting to see how Hewett goes. He was our pick until Dumont was gifted to us.

Yeah, I was a fan of Hewett. I hope we picked right!
