ANDREW Gaff didn't need to prove anything to AFL recruiters ahead of the NAB AFL Draft, but the sublimely-talented onballer has further enhanced his top-five credentials by claiming the Oakleigh Chargers' best-and-fairest award.

but it's worth noting Gaff played just seven of a possible 19 games for the Chargers in the 2010 TAC Cup due to school football commitments with Carey Grammar

Previous results:
2008 2nd Best and Fairest: Luke Shuey

Xavier Gotch won it in 08, didn't get drafted.

But he did win it just off 7 games, great effort.

Oakleigh won the TAC Cup this year as well if I'm not mistaken?

Freo has just hired their coach as well

Not sure how many games there are in a TAC Cup season..

If WC do go with another mid what does that mean for the players already here? Would Gaff push Stevens or Swift out of the side? It just seems we have quite a few mids now and we aren't going to delist any.

Within reason you can never have enough midfielders.

Premiership sides are build around not only quality, but depth in the onball brigade.

Remember back when we were at the top? Commentators always used to go on about the fact that even if you somehow tagged Judd/Cousins/Kerr out of the game, there were still blokes like Embley, Fletcher and Braun who would step up to fill the void.

Geelong had/has amazing depth too, and Collingwood's has about 14-15 guys who can rotate through the midfield.

I believe we're currently trying to build a similar model - I think Scott Burns might have hinted at this before.

In other words - yeah, we can fit in Gaff!! Besides he'd complement our current structure very nicely. We have lots of "Lenny Hayes", but not really any "Dal Santo's".

Agree on Andreoli. Was very keen on him, but now would rather Cripps.

May or may not be because of Pav's opinion on the two.

Cripps is a glorified small defender. If Wislon is available, ill have him no questions asked.

Nothing wrong with Andreoli's disposal either, superior to our current outside midfielders.

I have a preference towards picking up offensive talents. If that means Polec over Gaff then we might take that risk, we could sure up our defensive stocks by picking up Wilson. His kicking is a feature and it could allow us to develop Shepps into a long term Wingman.

Butler has durability issues and Waters can't kick, so not everything is rosie in defence.

I think the more versatile midfielders will play other positions. Some say Gaff isn't a Wingman, yet neither is Sheppard, as he was drafted as a HBF. I think both have a future playing on the wings. Better those two than using more predominantly IM types like Ebert, Masten and Swift.

High 1st round picks usually get a game in their 1st season. Gaff most certainly will. But Gaff also doesn't have the build at present to play in the centre square. Will he play on a wing as I expect, or will Woosha do a Masten on him and play him as a FP/HFF.

Whats the feeling with the local boys. I saw a lot of EF and they had some excellent talent state 18s boys Cripps Monaco Fassolllo and three who should have played Menagols Chalwell Schofield (the later 3 all colts team of the year and Premiership colts (all 3 had exceptional GF) All tested very well at combines. Are we better in WA to look at our own talent
Some vision of Chalwell

Interesting, see I'd be very disappointed if we took Wilson over Cripps. Quick li'l bugger with great footskills who can push into the forward line and really plays more like an offensive mid than a backmen. Yes please.

God that highlights package of Chalwell is impressive!
He moves amazingly well for such a big man, his kicking skills are superb and he's an uber strong mark. Could also back up NicNat in the ruck in the future. He plays predominately CHB but can obviously push forward and kick goals. Also has great endurance and surprisingl good speed as well. Apparently WC have shown a lot of interest and I have a feeling we'll pick him up at 28. Really hope we do too!

4: Andrew Gaff
26: Jamie Cripps
28: Tyler Chalwell
62: Jacob Brennan

There's one any of four we could take at pick 4 - Gaff, Heppell, Polec or Atley - I'd be happy with any of them, but yes: Cripps and Chalwell at 26 and 28 please ... a BIG BIG PLEASE! :thumbsu: Jesus, these weeks are going slowly.

How tall is Chalwell?

He looks around 192>4cm.

Looks like he can play KP forward and ruck (would need to reach 196 min to play as a 2nd ruck)........... even back, so quite versatile.

Nice highlight package too, took some good clean grabs under pressure, uses the ball well and kicks well to team mates and at goal.

Eagles need to pick up 1 tall with their three picks.

Got a great leap but i reckon you needa be atleast 195 to ruck even as a backup. Great potential from what ive seen of him. Still not sure why he wasnt at the championships was he injured?

I think someone mentioned he may have been injured? not sure as I don't know too much about the kid to be honest. But i do agree at 192 he is short for the ruck, although Lynch is 194 and competes in the ruck for us so whats an extra 2cm? If his leap is good enough to match it with taller players it may not be an issue.

That being said his poise and skill along with his contested marking are a tantalising prospect and I would be rapt if we drafted him.

Lynch doesnt play ruck. He plays push opposition to ground and wait till ball land on head.
there are two ways to ruck one is get higher than your oppenent with height/leap and the other is get rid of your opponent with strength. i struggle to see chalwell doing either. Height would probably his go with his leap if he was to grow just a little bit more. Regardless he is a good prospect/

Would rather Sam Menagola think he will be the better player.

I'd be happy with chalwell, cook or mitchell. I think at absolute worst one of those will be available so im not fussed.

I'm also not fussed with our pick 4. Gaff, Heppell, Polec and atley will all keep me happy.

and i'm happy with almost any slider at 26.

I think its gonna be hard for me to get angry at our drafting this year.

:eek:Geeeeeez, talk about going out on a limb here with this statement!:D

Re: Chalwell

Odd, for KPP didn't see any leading or body-on-body work in the highlights. Seems to have good dexterity, coordination and skills for his height, but at that level he really was a man amongst boys physically. Seemed to be more 3rd back/tall in those vids?

Masten, Ebert and Scott Selwood area all vital players. They're a lot better prospects than a lot of others in that draft. I'm glad we took all the mids in the same draft - now they have seen the lows together. I think this will end up being one of our most important drafts.

EDIT: 2008 was a star studded draft though.
