Hird was drafted in 1990, but it wasn't under the F/S rule. His dad having only played 3 or so games for Essendon.

It was his Grand Father who had the stronger links to the club. 100+ games, ex-president, grand stand.
 
People seem to forget that prior to around the last 10 years the draft was a real luck of the draw scenario. There aren't all the state and interstate competitions there are now, which give everyone the chance to look at the talent on offer. Educated guesswork was more like it back in the day - hence Hird going at 71 and Grant at 103.

Brian Harris pick 71.
Brad Miller pick 55.

No way....13 is still a pretty high pick and he isn't that great value. I would think brian harris and even shane tuck in the 70s are more VALUE for picks than him
