Draft mechanisms under review

No one gets any credit for development. People seem to assume that it's all about the draft and players would be identical wherever they land.

I suspect it costs more to retain than the top Vic teams pay, but less than the bottom Vic clubs pay. I reckon you're probably in the middle. But we're both guessing.
We couldn't recruit Mckay over Essendon and Hawthorn, their lists are in a pretty poor state.
From reports our offer was quite high

Most clubs do. Maybe not GC and GWS as they've rarely picked that late.
How many of Carlton's best 10 players are 4th rounders, rookies or MSD (that they drafted)? How about North? Or WB?

Good clubs don't rely on top picks.

Neither could Hawthorn (unless he's halving his time) some seem to view Victoria as all one club. And it's one player that got band 1 compensation because Essendons offer was nuts.

Dane Rampe is our captain and has been one of our best players for quite some time.
He was a rookie selection
Tom Papley is our best forward, he is a rookie selection

Yep. Sydney have a long history of making excellent use of later picks. It is a big part of what makes them such a well run club.

Two of those clubs have been long term basketcases and had a heap of very early picks - thus most of their best players were early picks. I'd have to look more closely at their lists to see how many late picks they've used and their hit rate. But North actually trumped Lewis with late pick KPF gold in the same draft.

Just shows development is key

Long term successful clubs all have strong recruiting teams, development coaching, tactical coaching, player management, etc. An elite footy department is the biggest advantage a club can have. But there are also other advantages/disadvantages within the comp - location, size, and drafting rules. Nonetheless the AFL are doing a great job of running a really even comp. I do think the current academy matching process is a threat to that - particularly if it stays in place for a fair while longer as the academies really develop.

A great job of ensuring vic clubs dominance.

The northern clubs are also strengthening the league and not just stealing from Vic, SA and WA.
The comp can't expand without it.
The VIC clubs get other advantages

Brisbane has an academy, why is the Swans get picked on more
The Swans academy has generated more top 5 picks than the Brisbane one has, and so has generated more controversy. Sydney has also won a flag relatively recently, Brisbane hasn't.

I do agree with you that the academy issues are structural rather than individual. There is no point talking only about the sydney academy.

Absolutely. That recent deal signing the GF in secret to the MCG for 50 years was peak AFL corruption. It isn't related to the theme of draft mechanisms but it is utter corruption.
Let's face it, the afl done it so the Vic government would renovate their ovals

The entire first round should be open and totally clean. No compensation picks, academy, father son, assistance picks in the first round.

If you are good enough to be taken there, then you should be available to everyone.

That includes my own team. The whole system has become ridiculously compromised.
