This years drafting and trading periods to me are extremely important to get it right. In my opinion I am certain the AFL will grant us a priority pick so either picks 1,2,20,38 or 2,3,21,39 or there abouts. I think we should trade our priority pick (providing we get 1) for a established quality midfielder and draft a Aish like with our first pick, even pick 20 odd should go on a midfielder. I don't think we will lose any players wanting to move or under free agent however there is certain to be atleast another 10 or so changes to our list. Players that have poor decision making and poor SKILLS should be put under the microscope.
I am resigned to the fact that this year our achievments will be behind where we all would like so the off season needs to be MASSIVE on and off the field so the likes of Hogan and CO think the club is going places..I haved no doubt that we will rebound from the huge downs that we all have been through over the past few years and we might turn out alright next year if things go to plan. I think it is our turn for a bit of good fortune and luck.
Lets hope we can have a good second half to 2013 and claim a few scalps.

Draft for the future, go young and get it right. We aren't going to make the finals in the next 5 years so I'd look at drafting Aish & Sheed.

FWIW a PP comes at the start of a round of picks.

We will not get a Priority pick, we probably deserve one now more then we did under Bailey - but the AFL would be absolutely ****ed on if they did it.

And rightly so.

For our first pick - we should look at Aish, Dunstan, Scharenberg, Billings, Sheed; the last three in any order.

Aish is slight, but only because shoulder injuries have prevented him from hitting the gym recently.

He's got the most complete game of any midfielder in the draft, great skill and finds room out of absolutely nowhere.

Got 23 touches and a goal as a 16 year old in the SANFL GF, he's a level above someone like Toumpas as a talent (who's very talented).

Dunstan probably won't have the production of Sheed given that Sheed is WAs only real quality midfielder, but his game is so much more transferable to AFL level then Sheeds - a real professional allegedly (heard you will not see better skinfolds for an U18), damaging inside player, can kick a goal and is powerful (similar to Dustin Martin without the attitude).

Our second pick, Hartung is the one we want - small midfielder (around Vineys height) racks up numbers, uses the ball well, runs all day, can hit the scoreboard and is a solid size.

He'll probably be more of a role player in the Champs, but at Dandenong he will tear up the TAC Cup - if he plays mifield in the Champs he could go top 10.

There are some good pacey mid/smalls that will be available too, Lewis Taylor, or Dwayne Wilson for example.

I'm going to some of the Champs, so I'll be happy to provide some opinions! (Last two rounds)

How does the priority pick work exactly?

I know that the AFL now choose if a club gets one even if they meet the criteria, but if the Demons finish second last and GWS last, what pick would you get with the priority? Should it be 1?

Because I would be shocked if the AFL would take away pick 1 from GWS next year if they finish bottom.

Good insight mate, totally forgot about dunstan. They compare him to jobe Watson/dustin Martin. Think he got the sa captaincy this year from memory, as did Toumpas last year, both from woodville west torrens. Imagine a midfield of a good mix in Viney, Toumpas & dunstan.

As for the PP I'm not sure that we won't get it. Jackson seems like a smart man and he knows he's got one really good shot at getting us back on track, I'd be surprised if he didn't really push for one. Considering 6 years of hell I reckon the afl will give us one especially now prendagast has gone. It could be an early pick but unlikely, more like a start of second round pick. It will certainly be one to watch!

Just to illustrate Hartung's ability - in his first game back from injury this year he kicked 3 goals, had 33 touches (17 being effective kicks, only 4 ineffective kicks and 25 effective in total) - had 21 handball receives and 4 tackles.

PP's come at the start of rounds, we wouldn't get pick 1. Just another second rounder.

He goes alright.... We haven't seen those sort of stats since Yze, Rigoni, Leoncelli, Powell & McDonald days!! God out midfield has been crap for a long time hasn't it!

If it's at the start of round 1, wouldn't it be pick 1 then? Giving us an extra 2nd rounder ain't going to help at all.

Agreed. We've cocked it up too many times. If I was the AFL I wouldn't be giving us one.

Maybe they'll award us a PP, but then they'll select the player for us, instead of leaving it up to our recruiting...

I was more going for the fact that we tanked, they sanctioned us for tanking (lets not kid ourselves) for PPs... then they'll just wheel around and give us another that same year?

I doubt it.

If the AFL didn't give PPs to teams that screwed up their recruiting then who would they give them to?!

True that. It wouldn't be a good look.

If Melbourne don't snag a PP no one ever will.
Six years of crap and no hope for the future surely would meet the criteria.
What has happened in past seasons should have no bearing on the granting of PP's this season, understand the angst regarding this situation but dead set if they are serious about granting truly terrible sides the chance to bounce back through an extra pick, I present the MFC 2013.

I agree - but the AFL is above all else a PR exercise.

It should happen if you look at it purely on the results, but they wont.

Do not want a priority pick, we can't be handed freebies all the time.

Our first 3 picks to be used on 18 year old midfielders, 2 harder insider types, 1 outsider with a bit of space, add Hogan and up grade Magner. Wouldn't mind Dunstan with our first pick

5 delistings, we are overstocked on talls and small defenders, a couple of those would be first on the list.

Personally I'd rather delist the spuds... we're overstocked on those too!

We have too many spuds to delist all at once, we can't just do it one year, we are going to have to wait until their contracts run out, For example Bail would head my list but is contracted for next season so I think we wait until then. Out of contract this year is Nicholson, Jetta and Tynan, all smaller defenders that go along with Strauss and Terlich, do we really need all 5 of them? 2 must go. Way too many tall forwards so Fitzy is going to struggle for a spot. Sellar, Gillies and Davis are out of contract, 3 back up key defenders, one must go, and then last maybe Joel Mac, struggling to get a game now. We need to make room for genuine midfielders.

If Sylvia leaves we then target a free agent to replace him, if Watts wants out then we would get a replacement through trade.

What's everyone's thoughts on Boyd? I'm of the mind that you always select the best available. Some people are touting him as a top two pick. Now I realise we're looking tall in the forward line, but with injury concerns over Clark and, to a lesser extent, Dawes, and another year into our young midfield, would it be stupid to pick him up? I just don't wanna look back in three years when Clarks knacked and Dawes can't get on the field and wonder what could have been.

Think you need 3-5 small defenders all up these days tbh. 3 in the firsts, 2 in the reserves. Tynan is young enough to be safe, Jetta will want to show something fast.

Fitzpatrick will surely get another year, we know he's a long term investment. Needs to keep plugging away in the 1's and 2s.

Can see Gillies and Davis getting the axe.

No thanks, for me. I'd like to think both Clark and Dawes will be part of our side for the next 5-6 years, and that we can address that need in 3 or 4 years. Mids mids mids.
