List Mgmt. Draftee, NGA and Father/Son Discussion - 2025

Good list and it will be interesting to see which players take their opportunity given another 12 months development and not being the bottom agers.

Unless we have a dramatic turnaround soon, we will be able to add another quality midfielder to our list as there are some very good options in the top 10.

In terms of cashing out for Oscar and failing to get HR to extend, I think the first 2 rounds will include some very good players. As you say, not as deep as the 2024 draft but I believe the top 10 will be stronger.

Once again the Suns have multiple R1 picks (own, Pies and Port) and will be looking to sell off (either for more points or to move forward).

The posturing with Oscar is interesting. We either have a healthy Oscar on the list and be happy or we likely accept a top 5 pick for FA Compo and that would buy us Curtain.

Harley is the hard one. My strong preference is for him to extend before the end of this season. You know my thinking - depending where Essendon and Melbourne finish, it may well be better to take 3 x R1 picks from the Dons and hit the draft hard before Tassie (Dees and Dons R1 plus Dons F1). There may be something going back but that is what I see as being the main components for asking price. I will be tracking both these clubs ladder finish as a point of interest until we get the much desired HR signature.

It is looking more and more likely that The Chad extends with Sydney. While I would have loved he and Harley together, it would have been an expensive acquisition.

So in a world where we finish bottom 2, Oscar is to leave giving us band 1 and Harley refuses to extend, we could have

Pick 1 or 2 - own R1
Pick 2 or 3 - Oscar FA
Pick 4 to 6 - Dons R1
Pick 6 to 10 - Dees R1
Pick 10 - do a deal with Suns for the Dons F1 for lowest of Port or Suns R1 (again may need something else)
Pick 19 - Hawks R1 assuming they get to GF
Pick 22 - own R2 assuming some FA in there

So in a nutshell, I would rather we keep the players for the right reasons but this is also a good year to cash out if that is where we eventuate.

Coming away with Sharp or Rodriquez, Curtain, Cummings or Greeves, Onley, Lindsay then Grlj or Swaddling would be an outstanding haul to add with our F/S and NGA crew.

The top 6 for me are clear stand outs but after that I think we’ll see more changes than usual between consensus preseason rankings and where they are taken in the draft. Would be fantastic if Curtin slides and there’s usually a Tauru/Windsor etc in the top 10.

I’m reluctant to speculate too much on Harley but let Oscar go, take 2 x top 5 picks to the draft and as per your original suggestion insist that an unmatched FA bid includes a trade of Oscar’s destination 1R for our later 2R/3R picks and any FA comp we’d get for Petch and/or Cole.

2 x top 5 picks, Hawks 1R, another 1R then the NGAs/FS would do me just fine. No problem taking a 2R points deficit into 2026 with two highly rated NGAs looming.

"I played a few NGA games, and I've got a few looks from some of the [Eagles] coaches.

"They were nice and all, they recognised me. But they were like 'what are you doing over there?'.

"I don't think they quite knew that I'd jumped ship."

Whose job is it to work with and monitor the NGA kids?

Bringing in Malakai, Wes Walley and then McGlade in consecutive years through our NGA for (hopefully) lower cost picks is going to be a huge win in the long run.

A little flat that the rules change right as our NGA program starts to bear fruit...

Still hoping to see something come out of the competitive balance review?

If Evans and Walley become top 40 prospects, we would've lost access if the rules didn't change last year.

AFL have changed the rules with access to FS & NGA players way too often and inconsistently.
Finally a system from to last year that reflects true value and full access for clubs who want to bring in both who they have invested significant resources in.
Hopefully no more changes to access!!

It feels like Freo gets the rub of the green when it comes to these sort of situations. I hope we dont look back in 12/15 years and this kid becomes a dual brownlow medalist.

Reid, Sharp, Hewett, Allan/Ginbey and Robinson....
It’s pretty clear he falls in Freo’s catchment.

If it was found that he was in the Eagles zone because he was a boarder that would just open the rules up to club interference.

Didn't WCE_phil suggest that he went to a.meeting at AFL house and one of the topics for discussion was better access to NGAs for SA and WA teams? Forgive me if I'm wrong

I can't comment until something is announced other than to say that is a large part of why I was there.

I think a great response from the AFL would be to allow each club to rookie 2 more indigenous cat b rookies to every club list
for either 2 or 3 years, this 1 year cat b rookie contracts is bs.
Very difficult to be able to develop any talls under the current scenario.
Also its quite obvious that the majority of cat b rookies being added because they are not drafted though the normal draft will require more time to develop and will have a higher failure rates.

It’s quite telling that the number of indigenous players on AFL lists has steadily reduced since lists were reduced from 44 to 42 due to Covid cost cutting

Allowing clubs to recruit two additional cat b players will see numbers of indigenous players on lists increase as well as encouraging clubs to invest more in their academy zones

Us and Fremantle should push even harder for the 2 extra spots using the extra travel demands as a reason to have additional numbers if the AFL don’t want a league wide increase

Failing that, we should push for it as a draft concession to help rebuild the list

totally agree

Just sneaking this one in before the big kick off this weekend for the Talent League. These are my thoughts on the race for pick 1, the major and minor contenders. It also functions as something of a ranking video to get my thoughts on how I see things before we get cracking in 2025.

Fantastic video with considered comments on each player thanks very much. Would add that Greeves is very clean off the ground which is in part why I think he’s able to find space that others can’t.

I hope Claremont leave Cody at CHB and keep his name out of the headlines. Also very interested to see who has the better year out of Emmett and CDT, hard for me to seperate the two.

I think that's fair, there's not a huge talent difference. My main reason for the ranking differential is that CDT is much more of a ruck and hasn't shown the contested marking ability that we've seen from Emmett at this stage, and rucks just don't get picked in the top 10.

I can't see the downside for the afl of having a larger cat b list, especially for indigenous.
