Overlooking Leunberger (if available) with pick 4 because he is a ruckman is like the Eagles passing on Judd with pick 3 because they have too many midfielders.

Rd 1 pick 4 will be used on the "BEST AVAILABLE" because that has been the drafting philosophy of Brisbane Lions in the past and it's the philosophy of all top sides. I do not anticipate that our philosophy will change under the new recruiting regime.

A perfect example of a club getting it wrong is Richmond when they opted to select Fiora because they did not select the best available but opted to select according to need.

The measure of a quality recruiter is their ability to pick the "best available" with their early picks. Every club points to how well they've done with pick 55, 66 or 77 etc... Recruiters live or die with their early picks. Why is Collingwood and Carlton accused of drafting badly. Because their early picks tended to be average at best. When a club's early selections prove to be duds, well, the latter selections are given a chance to play because there is no other option. Someone has to take the field. A few may even take the opportunity and perform well. However one must remember that the player lists consists of mostly later drafted players. You only have one or two first rounders each year. If the list consists 3/4 later round selections all you need is four of them to succeed and the naive supporter will argue how well the club's done at recruiting. When in reality the club has wasted the opportunity with their first rounders. It's the FIRST round where the majority of "A" grade players come from. I know just about every draft throws a gem in the latter rounds and players like Black and Goodes do emerge from time to time. So if our recruiters get their top picks correct and strike gold with one or two later picks than a quality lists is developed.

If the club listened to the "GET LUCY WITH PICK 9" hysteria and selected him ahead of Mitch Clark, I'd suspect just about now, this forum would have been scathing of our club's recruiting effort. I see the "I LOVE LUCY" mob still has a voice. How glad are we the club went with the 'best available" last year.

IN conclusion: If Leunberger is available to us at pick 4 and the club has him assessed as the "best available" his name will be called out on the 25th November. However, if Mitch Thorp turns out to be the best thing since slice bread and we did not select him, beware of irel's wrath.:D

Haa haa. You are a tough man irel :D. Good post. I am from the "best available" school of thought and always have been. I would add that in what I have read in the media and what one reads in other media(BF:rolleyes:) Leunberger is picked ahead of Thorpe. The rumour is that Carlton will grab Leunberger anyway and then we would be looking at Hansen, Thorpe, Selwood as Gibbs, Gumbleton and Leunberger would already be gone.

Hansen, Thorpe, Selwood. Who is the best? All the pundits pick Hansen.

I agree we have struggled to attract decent ruckmen for the last 10 years. Carlton on the other hand...

If i wanted advice on drafting ruckmen i would ask the good folk at Carlton. Similarly, if i wanted advice on hosting a tea-party i would ask Chopper.
A pity we have no problem recruiting midfielders that should have had long careers with interstate sides. Leuenberger is considered an A grader and you're welcome to overlook him for a lesser talent if that's what you want. :)

Apparently Tim Brown wants to be picked up by Brissy and if he doesnt get drafted this year wants to come to play for M'side in hope of them noticing him n rookie drafting him the year after.

He's obviously not a top draft prospect as there has been no talk of the Lions picking him up under the father/son rule with their 3rd round pick #38.

He's not eligible is he? Didn't they change the f/s rule to 100 games.

That's sound enough logic if you make the assumption that the Berg would be the only A grader available to us. Don't forget that Selwood was Marc Murphy and Gibb's captain last year. Lack of opportunity via injury would appear to be the only factor that has conspired to allow Gibbs to be viewed as a cut above Joel Selwood.

It's easy to point at Crackers, Big Cox and Lade and make the argument that ruckmen won them the flag, but each of those guys has had an super elite midfield below him to begin with. The last few flag winners have been strong in the ruck, but the bunch before that was pretty average. Johnny Barnes, Matty Capuano, Aaron Keating, Pitiful Pittman.

Without exception those sides still had super talented and deep midfields.

So he won't be tall, but given he's only 18, there should be more bulking up to do. He could be playing at Vossy's weight in a few years.

So could I;)

Let's not get carried away with the romanticism of having another Browney on the list. Unfortunately sometimes genetics don't necessarily duplicate in siblings.

However if I was the Brisbane recruiter I would definitely consider drafting Tim as a rookie. Tim is not the fastest midfielder going around but he has courage, perseverance, dedication, he wins his own ball (plenty of it), he is excellent in stoppages, above average skills and he wants to play for Brisbane.

It is unfortunate that he is eligible to be drafted in this year's pool of talent because in comparison to what is available even in the rookie draft he may straggle to get drafted. IMO he is ideal for the Sydney type of game where winning and congesting the stoppages are crucial. However if that style of game proves to be nothing more than a blimp in the history of the game and we move on to the Bulldog's and Docker's way Tim may unfortunately be found wanting.

Tim's average disposal per game statistics in the TAC.

Geelong Falcons

Michael Rockefeller 25.60
Timothy Brown 23.82
Ryan Williams 22.33
Travis Boak 22.00
Daniel O'Keefe 20.56

...and comparison to what's available in the draft; http://www.thedrafter.net/articles/articles.asp?ad_id=42

People forget that speed isnt everything in football, you have to be able to get the bloody ball and use it... Look at Simon Black, not quick, but super smart and knows how to win his own ball! I'm not saying that tim brown is simon black, but he can win the ball!

Both the Selwood and the Leuenberger camps would be pretty happy with what they have each shown this year. I still think we needed Selwood more than Leuenberger but the kid does look like a rare talent thats for sure.

I am not taking anything away from Selwoods season, it has been sensational, but he has the advantage of a very good team around him. I suspect that Gibbs may have gone as well if he had been recruited by the Cats.

tough call that 1, the other limiting factor is that Gibbs has played back pocket half the year which doesnt help make a proper assessment of how he has gone.

what is really interesting is whether gumbleton and hansen will turn out as players or not, cos so far they have been given no opportunity/shown next to nothing (not sure of injury situations, etc though).

happy with our choice :)

I see I plonked my arse firmly on the fence!

I believed, and still do to an extent, that there was an element of the unknown with the 3 highly regarded KPPs last year. While Gibbs and Leuey were never going to be failed picks, Hansen, Gumby and Thorp had the ability to be anything or nothing. As good as Selwood has been and as promising as Gibbs, Leuey and Boak seem, it still would not surprise me if one of the KPPs ends up being rated the best player to come out of the draft - 5 years down the track.

What the young guys do this year is important but it is how they go in 2010 which will shape their clubs' futures. Deledio's Rising Star award now looks a little less shiny compared to Buddy Franklin's probable AA selection as one of the geniune superstars of the comp. Not saying Richmond should have ignored Deledio with pick 1 because he was the sure thing to be a 200 gamer - even though Buddy may well end up the best player of his cohort, he was the risk pick of the top 5. Something similar may well eventuate from last year's draft.
