I think football has already changed dramatically from what it was, going to see the football now is very different to going to Arden Street in the 70/80s. Everyone in Melbourne plays in the same stadiums and the local rivalries are not what they used to be.

Trecking down to Windy Hill, Princes Park or Collingwood's Asylumn was a big part of the local rivalry. It was as if you were marching to war. AFL is very sterile and bland by comparison.

I think you learn to adapt or you move on, perhaps it is why thousands of supporters for each club do not re-sign each year, perhaps the game today is just not what it used to be and they can't bring themselves to going through the motions every year.

I don't think we disagree on anything you've said, I agree, the game's changed in the 20 odd years I've been properly watching it and not for the better in my opinion, that's why even though the Roos are my one great love I much prefer to watch the local SANFL games, they haven't been sanitised as badly yet.

But whether there's been a lot of change or not I still feel the heart of the game is the passion and pride for your club's history and identity.

Mate, Duff is inpenetrable.

He controls theboard with 6 votes to 3.

He's going nowhere.

My thoughts are that he will stand down from the chairmanship and be replaced by Peter Scanlon and remain on the board, ala an Andrew Carter. I know what the vote situation is but Joseph, Aylett and Brayshaw will be the ones running the club.

Duff and Joseph are chalk and cheese mate. Duff won't let it happen.

Too long between drinks for a quality VichyCoast reference CM.

Tonight's election results are certainly being seen by the media as an indication that the club is going to relocate. News presenter on the late news on Ten just threw to the sports guy with '... the Roos may be on the move - permanently' to which he replied along the lines of 'Yes, that may be the case following tonight's election.'

Guys, just want to say that if Melbourne and Hawthorn had listened to their respective boards 10 years ago then we wouldnt have the clubs we grew up with to follow. We would have a bastardised version of those clubs that was in reality a corporate/AFL franchise. 10 years on both clubs are on track thanks to AFL assistance and sound board administration and the respective boards from 96 have been proven dead wrong.

If North moves to the Gold Coast it will be the same; a corporate/AFL franchise. Moving to the Gold Coast will fulfill no-ones agenda but the AFL's. One of your posters (Tas) is right in that North can play the politics of this correctly and come out winners, but they need to be strong, smart, innovative and not pushed around by the AFL.

Tas said:
There is no point making the Gold Coast hostile by saying we are only there for the cash, or making the AFL look elsewhere for someone to help develop the market there. At this point in time we need a successful GC campaign. It is no coincidence that our CBF payment more than doubled the year we decided to work on the Gold Coast. Now it is not in the AFL's interest for us to tread water, they want us to be able to afford to put a winning team on the park because it serves their interest. A successful side playing in GC suits the AFL's agenda.

We just need to be clever the way we play the football politics. The club can buy the time and money it needs to make a real fist out of expanding our supporter base here by promoting the Gold Coast. They wont be ready to support an AFL side for many years to come. We can help them grow to become ready while we secure our own interests here in Melbourne.

Bloody good call. :thumbsu:

North can survive in Melbourne but they have to be smart like the Bulldogs have been, incorporating the whole of western Melbourne into the Bulldogs. North has to do the same thing with the developing outer northern/north-east suburbs. The Gold Coast team would be propped up with money, players, concessions etc and would probably win multiple flags in its first 10-15 years. But this would come at the price of selling your soul.

Hope you guys can remain in Melbourne as your club is not just a part of the VFL/AFL, but a part of the history and culture of the city of Melbourne. The less teams there are the more homogenised the AFL becomes. I would rather watch Melbourne play North Melbourne, Fitzroy or Footscray over Fremantle, Adelaide or WCE any day of the week. Good luck and dont give up. :thumbsu:

So are we going to get new bumper stickers to replace the old ones?

Your team..............North Melbourne.
Your Club...............Err the shareholders might disagree with that one.
Our future..............Who knows?

Smart move to give the ordinary member a vote so that the tax liability could be wiped off so the "not for profit" interpetation of business operations could apply.

However Duff said on Wednesday night the club had no 'pre-ordained position' on whether to relocate to the Gold Coast.

"What we have is a three-year (10-game) contract with the Gold Coast," he said.
"This board in its discretion may decide in the future that there may be more or less that we can do (on the Gold Coast) but anyone who thinks there is a pre-ordained position with respect to the Gold Coast is mistaken."

While I can understand the position many are coming from re; their displeasure I think it's important we take these comments as they are.

that position isn't any different to Perkins.

the only difference being Duff is obviously willing to access the financial position of the club and the success of the Gold Coast market before deciding whether to play a couple more home games there on future seasons.

If the worst that was to come out of this was playing 5 games in the Gold Coast a season then I think most would be satisfied. And at this stage I don't see anything happening differently.

Anyway, with three years until the expiration of the contract this is our chance to maximise our Melbourne base and get our club running at a level it has in the past.

Three years is a long time and while things at the moment are arguably (perhaps not even) heading in the opposite direction than we'd like, with hopefully a good young, exciting squad coming through with the promise of exciting football, things may well already be on the up.

I'd like to think so anyway.

Good luck to RJ, Mark and James.

I'll take Duff's word about no pro-GC agenda, which many on here tagged

and access all three on their merits, we'll see how they go anyway.

It wasn't the outcome we all wanted tonight but there's nothing worse than a club not presenting a united front.

Tell me GONORTH! Do they have a clue about our team. Do they follow our team! Do they barrack or live the spirit as we north supporters do. Those pricks are out there to report only. What they get is info collected from journalists and sit on their arses and report. Thats all they do.

Im sick of all these jounalists who report stuff on us with out any knowledge about our team. This better change soon!

At last some bloody commonsense
Well said!

Most of the sports news shows r based in Sydney they hardly follow the game there well not to the depth we do in Melbourne. So they know little of AFL or its intricaces or history

Well, exactly, thats what im tryign to point out, but you also have the healys, the wilsons, the sheahans who continue to write without having anything to prove their point. No inside info what so ever and thats what makes me angry.

The Board has been elected and now should be given the time to develop their direction for the Club, and to communicate this to the membership. I spoke to many key players tonight and am now willing to judge them on their actions. Although they can't afford to be slow if the next election for one third of the board is held in Oct 07.

The supporters and members can only address the GC relocation issue by buying memberships and attending games. The stronger the support in Melbourne that harder the GC relocation arguement becomes.

I want to see the Board and Club have a much stronger Melbourne focus while maximising the GC venture.

I was dissappointed in the manner by which the AGM was run in gagging questions and debate but thats water under the bridge.

I think we all acknowledge the importance of producing strong (Melbourne) membership numbers right at this point in time. Most of the diehards are already bought up. We need to attract the fairweather supporters.

So I ask, how can journos making such comments on the TV possibly help this push ? I don't care about the journo's credibility, the talk still hurts us.

Great to see you back on board!

I admire your response Limerick, all things considered. Fantastic stuff. Are you more positive about the direction of the club considering your discussions tonight, or less?

Good stuff Limerick, i have many ideas of my own but to be honest i wouldnt know where to send them and there not complicated, but they cost money. The biggest issue is what Eddie did at the pies an office assesment and spending money to get more experienced staff in all areas.

i'm not saying i agree with it, i'm just bringing a less emotional point across.
yes i like soccer and cricket what has that got to do with it.
you dont have to be in the state to talk about footy
If you could be financially viable here why have you not been doing it for the last 20 years when you have been succesful on field.

again, i'm not agreeing and i'm not having a go, but look at the facts guys.

Because during our most successful on-field period for 20 years, Greg Miller renamed us the Kangaroos and shipped us off to Sydney.
